Organic Pond Water Treatments for Clear, Quality Water

by Barbara 24. April 2011 07:01

Question about the Organic Biotech Pristine Natural Pond Cleaner 32 oz and Organica Clear Blue Pond Clear Water Formula 32 oz.

Q: "What is the difference between these two products? How much do I need for my pond? Thanks. Todd"

Answer: The products are identical in composition. The difference is that the second one has a safe blue organic dye. Both formulas of pond water cleaner contain a broad spectrum of beneficial bacteria and microbial nutrients. The water cleaner removes excess nutrients such as phosphates, nitrates and ammonia from water, breaks down sediment, colors water an aesthetically pleasing shade of blue, improves water clarity and water quality. Both are safe for all aquatic life including fish, plants, and invertebrates. You need to measure your pond and determine approximately how many gallons of water are in it.  Unfortunately, I do not currently have this in our Iowa warehouse. The best information I can find is to put in 4 Gallons Per Acre Foot (325,000 Gal) As A Shock Dose, 2 Gallons Per Acre Foot (325,000 Gal).

Fountain Protector by Care Free Enzymes 4 oz. treats up to 5 gallons of water in small fountains with just one capful. Made in the USA, the directions say to use weekly. This is a non-toxic, biodegradable, natural enzyme product that uses food grade enzymes and is free of bacteria. It prevents stains, sludge, mineral deposits and organic contaminants for naturally clear water. It is safe for birds, pets, wildlife and humans. The only caution has to do with drinking the product undiluted and keeping it out of one's eyes.

Fountain Clear for Bird Bath and Pond 16 Oz. is another preventative option for cleaner bird baths and ponds. This formula prevents organic contaminates from forming (ie: crusty white scale deposits, iron, copper, hard water stains) using two unique technologies: one helps prevent the buildup of stains, and mineral deposits on the birdbath surface; the second uses bio-enzymatic activity to keep water clear and free from the organic debris that can make the water cloudy. For larger water fountains and indoor/outdoor waterfalls, Fountain Clear is also a great choice. One capful treats 1 gallon of water. No need to dilute. Just pour in. 16 ounce bottle of fountain clear treats 6400 gallons of water. Safe for fish, birds, animals, even safe for humans! From Ecological Laboratories.

Clear Water Jumbo Bale Barley Straw for Ponds, 5000 GAL contains natural enzymes that keep pond water clean, too. One gallon treats 5000 gallons of pond water.  Just float this on your pond. Choose the correct size of barley straw according to the size of your pond. There are several sizes to choose from including Clear Water Mini Bales Barley Straw 500 Gal. 2/PK  with each bale treating 500 gallons of water and the Clear Water Super Mini Bales Barley Straw 1000 GL 2/PK with each of the bales treating 1000 gallons of water. The barley straw bales need to be replaced every 6 months. Since it takes about a month for the action to occur, the recommendation is to add sufficient barley straw bales every 5 months. Then water stays clear.

I hope this answers your question.

Barbara

Save Money. Use D Spacers or C Spacers with AA Rechargeable Batteries

by Barbara 23. April 2011 12:51

Question about Eneloop D Spacers For AA Rechargeable Batteries 4/PK and Eneloop C Spacer For AA Rechargeable Batteries, 4/PK

Q: "I go through a lot of C and D cell alkaline batteries. What are the C and D spacers? How do they work? Do I need to use Sanyo rechargeable batteries? Thanks. Bill"

Answer: What you do is insert AA rechargeable batteries in each spacer and then insert the correct size and number of spacers in the battery using device. The best choice AA rechargeable batteries are the Eneloop AA Rechargeable Nimh Batteries.  These are Sanyo AA rechargeable SECHR3UTG8BP batteries with 8 batteries per pack. You could substitute any AA 2000mAh pre-charged batteries for the Sanyo. Or you could use a higher mAh battery. mAh stands for "Milliamp hours." Many flashlight bulbs use around 500 mAh, So the higher the mAh, the longer the time the battery operated unit is powered. For example, Safe Home sells generic AA rechargeable batteries, the Rechargeable AA Ni-MH Battery, 2800mAh, FOUR(4) which can be recharged approximately 500 times. You do need a battery charger that can handle the 2800mAh. Safe Home currently sells the Super Quick Ni-MH Battery Charger, Dual Volt.,AAA /AA This unit holds 4 AAA or 2 AA batteries. It is comparable to the Energizer and the Kodak rechargers.

Features Include:

  • Reuse up to 1000 times: no need to worry about memory effect, able to charge only the amount you need.
  • Eneloop 8 pack AA 2000 mAh pre-charged. Ready to use right out of the pack.
  • Internal test results shows eneloop gives up to 4 times more shots when using a DSC than standard Alkaline
  • Eneloop combines all the features of an alkaline battery (Ready to Use) with the benefits of Rechargeable (Reusable)
  • SECHR3UTG8BP
  • Very slow self discharge maintains 85% residual capacity after 1 year of storage and 70% residual capacity after 2 years of storage

I hope this helps answers your questionsl We sell large quantities of the D and the C cell spacers so many people must be aware of the money to be saved.

Barbara

Window Stops Fit Inside Window Frame or On Windows or Sliding Doors to Limit Opening

by Barbara 18. April 2011 10:44

Question about options to window guards.

Q: "We have a cottage. Our windows are single hung and sliders. We want to keep windows open for ventilation without the expense of window guards. What window stops do you suggest that don't require hiring a handyman? Thanks. Bethany."

Answer: Safe Home sells 4 different types of window stops. The Window Guardian Super Stopper, The Window Wedge, The Window Warden and the Window Guardian Lock. The best choices still are window guards. The John Sterling Window Guards can be locked with a removable lock and swing open for cleaning windows. These are not expensive but would require a handy man type person if you cannot do the installation itself. The Guardian Angel window guards are much easier to install. They are not lockable but do remove completely from the window mounts.

Window Guardian Super Stopper The fastest and easiest to install is the Window Guardian or Super Stopper window stop. This home safety device combines a 2.75 inch flexible suction cup with a unique shaped wedge (1.25 inch x 2 inch). Clean the window. Open the window 4 inches or less. Suction cup on the stops on either side of the single hung window lock mechanism or along the sides of the sliders (as high as you can). These are also great to limit sliding door openings if you have children you want to keep inside the house.

Window Wedge: The next easiest to install is the Window Wedge®. The Window Wedge® uses two 8 inch velcro strips that are 3/4 inches wide. The wedge portion is removable so you can open the window opening wider for cleaning. The that fit on the window frame itself. Made in USA.

To Install Window Wedge Window Stoppers On a Double Hung or Single Hung Window:

    Close the window
Clean the surface of the window trim prior to application. Do not attach to glass itself.
Peel off the backing from the 8 inch loop strip and place in the center of the upper window frame for a double hung or single hung window.
Attach the Window Wedge® to the loop strip.
Attach the second window wedge on the other side at the same height.
Open the window until it is stopped by the window wedge.
Note: For maximum child safety, maximum window opening should not exceed 4 inches.

To Install Window Wedge Window Stoppers On a Slider Window:

Close window. Clean window frame surface before application of loop strip.
Peel off backing of 8 inch loop strip and place in center of upper horizontal window frame (not on the glass)
Attach the Window Wedge® to the loop strip with the
two tines facing the adjacent window section.
Slide window open until contact is made with the Window Wedge®
Attach the second Window Wedge® unit to the bottom part of the
Adjust the position of the Window Wedge® so that the
window opening is 4 inches or less.
Note: For maximum child safety, maximum window opening should not exceed 4 inches.

Window Guardian Window Lock. The push-button key lock design is a patented feature. Remove the key to keep the window locked. Easy to use, this security lock provides peace of mind and installs easily in minutes. The Window Guardian has a tamper-resistant cover and fits most windows. Requires a screwdriver for installation. White.

Before installation, remove the pull-key and cover.

1. Push the button while pulling the pull-key until it comes free. To remove cover, push down and slide it along the base towards the pull-key end.

2. Place the base on the spacer and line up the screw holes. Using the three #6 at head wood screws attach the base to the window or sill so that the end of the base is close to the edge of the sill or window.

3. Place the pin body onto the base so that the location tab ts into one of the three position slots. Select the position slot that gives the closest t to the keeper without causing interference.

4. Slide the cover along the base from the pull key end until it snaps into place. If it seems to bind, turn the cover around to position the locking bump at the correct end.

5. Place the pull key into the back of the assembled body and rotate gently until it finds the correct alignment and push the button, locking it in place.

6. Locate the keeper and install with the two #6 pan head screws. Clip the cover over the keeper to hide the screws. (Fig 3) An alternate orientation of keeper for vertical mounting is supplied. Use the second keeper as a holder for the pull-key when not engaged in the lock.

7.For aluminum windows, fit the lock to the aluminum adapter with 3 #6 machine screws. Fit the aluminum adapter to the handle or the flange at the end of the window. Secure the adapter with 2 Allen screws with Allen key provided. Use the appropriate keeper or drill a hole in the sill when required.

How to Use the Window Guardian: To unlock, pull the Pull-key and rotate 90 degrees/ the key button does not have to be pressed. The Pull-key can be left in. To remove the Pull-key, press the Pull-key button and pull until the key pops out. A second keeper is supplied as a location to store the Pull-key when not engaged in the lock. To insert the Pull-key into the key hole, rotate the key gently until it slides into alignment with the key hole. Once aligned, press the key button and push the key further into the key hole until you hear a click. Additional holes or keepers can be used to create locking positions that allow for partially open windows. Made in China.

The Window Warden fits in the window track of a double hung, single hung or slider or sliding door or on the window trim that surrounds the glass. Each Window Warden™ Kit Bulk Pack contains:

  • One mounting bracket 2 7/8 inches long with two 1/2 inch key hole openings plus two openings for mounting screws (included)

Havahart Cage Traps for Trapping Animals Like Raccoons and Possums

by Barbara 17. April 2011 09:39

Question about Havahart cage traps to catch nuisance animals like raccoons,

Q: "I am not sure which live animal trap would work the best for me. We live in town. There is a large county park about 15 miles away. If we can catch the raccoons and possums, we could take them there to release them. What Havahart trap or traps do you suggest? Thanks. Tom"

Answer:The main differences among the Havahart traps are the physical size, the number of doors and whether the cage collapses. So base your choice on size of the animal, your comfort with one or two door release systems and storage space.

These are the main types of live catch traps by Havahart, a Woodstream Company

Any of these live catch traps would work. The last two traps are easy set-easy reliease. Choose according to price and size of the animal. If it is a really large raccoon get the 42 inch trap.

The best baits for raccoons are

◊ Fish, fresh or canned
◊ Honey or sugar covered vegetables
◊ Smoked fish
◊ Watermelon
◊ Sweet corn
◊ Cooked fatty meat
◊ Crisp bacon
◊ Marshmallows are a favorite!

Good luck! Thanks for your question.

Sincerely,

Barbara

WA State Requires Automatic Gas Valve Shut Off System in New Homes

by Barbara 16. April 2011 08:06

Question about the Scentry III GFRAB Home LP/Natural Gas Detector.

Q: "How fast can you get a Scentry III system to me? Washington State now requires an automatic gas shut off system be installed before an occupancy permit can be issued for a new home who has a propane furnace in the basement. We are desperate. What I need are several components, the Scentry III GVL .75 Inch Gas Valve and the Scentry III GFRAB Home LP/Natural Gas Detector. My plumber is ready to install it. Our home rental is almost up. We are desperate. We have propane in this new home since it is in the country. Thanks. Robert."

Answer: Yours is the third sale to Washington state in the first two weeks of March. That is encouraging news to the building trade as the economy begins to improve.

The other sales were to Olympia, Seattle and to Bainbrdige Island. You live in Port Orchard. We appreciate that you've offered your contractor our contact information since we do have discounts available on packages of 6 units. We can next day air the units to you.

All customers ordered the 3/4 inch gas valve and the GRAB model. For those who are unfamiliar with these units, the Scentry models are all made in the USA, in fact in Davenport, IA. There is also a 220VAC model available for those who live outside the USA. All gas valves throughout the world are essentially sized the same so a USA made valve works fine in countries where 220V is the standard.

You should consider adding additional gas sensors if you have a propane range or propane fireplace. I know you've shared that both your water heater and furnace are in the same utility room.

In your case, you say that intermittent power failures are rare in your area plus your appliances do not have a standing pilot light. If a home owner with standing pilot light units elects to protect with a Scentry, then we do recommend the battery back-up unit.

Remember to check your carbon monoxide alarms at least monthly and change batteries annually if they are 9 volt units. There is nothing worse than an alarm beeping a low battery warning at 3 a.m.

Thank you for your question and for being our customer. We show your unit arrived on time, Next Day Air Saver, as you requested.

Sincerely,

Barbara
