Ultrasorbs DryPads Help Reduce Risk of Pressure Sores for Incontinent Bed-Ridden Persons

by Barbara 29. May 2011 13:08

Question about the Ultrasorb Underpads.

Q: "How do I choose from the three types of Ultrasorb Underpads? How do Ultrasorbs differ from other incontinent underpads? Thanks. Sue"

Answer: Ultrasorbs underpads are cost-effective because they protect against leakage that leads to multiple linen and underpad changes. Ultrasorb underpads are found in 1 in 6 U.S. hospitals today.  The high-strength design reduces the need for multiple drawsheets for positioning. One Ultrasorbs does the job of up to 4 regular underpads. Ultrasorbs respects individuals  as the thermo-bonded SuperCore™ pulls moisture away quickly and locks it away from the skin so patients don't feel uncomfortable. The aiir-permeable, crinkle-free design is quiet, comfortable and discreet.  Odor control makes care more pleasant, visits with family and friends more dignified. Ultrasorbs are compatible with low-air-loss mattresses used to prevent pressure ulcers. Hospitals and nursing homes use this as a catheter alternative as indwelling catheter usage is curtailed over CAUTI concerns. Clinically shown to help maintain skin integrity as part of an overall pressure ulcer prevention program.

There are three kinds of Ultrasorbs:

The original premium Ultrsorb AP or Air permeable pad. Indications: Open air continence management, ICU/CCU patients who should not be moved or disturbed, ER/OR for absorbing significant or ongoing fluid loss and any place where skin dryness is needed.

  •  Patented SuperCore® absorbent draws in moisture, locks it away from the skin and feels dry to the
     touch in just minutes.
  •  Manufactured under U.S. patent number 6,675,702.
  •  Lies flat when wet thanks to SuperCore®  technology, without bunching,  swelling or disintegrating.
  •  AquaShield film provides leakage protection that means fewer linen changes—no double-  padding needed!
  •  Air permeable for added comfort,   dryness and no embarrassing plastic film crinkling.
  •  Effective for use with low-air-loss mattress therapy—protects the bedding and permits airflow.

ULTRASORBS UF (Ultra-Fresh)  Indications: Use Ultrasorbs UF for the same cases as Ultrasorbs AP, plus when odor control due to liquid incontinence is a concern.

  •  Antimicrobial Ultra-Fresh™ protection inhibits the growth of bacteria and yeasts that can cause odors
  •  Locks odor-causing moisture away in the SuperCore® layer
  •  Makes for a fresher room
  •  All the absorbency and dry comfort features of the original Ultrasorbs AP

Premium Drypad & Drawpad ULTRASORBS® ES (Extra-Strength) Indications: Use Ultrasorbs ES for the same cases as Ultrasorbs AP,plus when the practice of stacking extra layers of pads, linens and drawsheets is of concern.

  • Lets you move, lift and position up to 325-pound
  • Innovative LiftSupport backsheet technology resists tearing
  • Eliminates the need and expense of extra draw sheets and reusable underpads for most patients.
  • All the absorbency and dry comfort features of the original Ultrasorbs AP

Window Wedges Made in USA Add Window Safety to Military and Public Housing

by Barbara 27. May 2011 05:33

Question about the Window Wedge Adjustable Velcro Window Stop,144/CS window stop product for slider windows in military housing.

Q: "Our company supplies military installations around the world with safety products. We've been asked to quote on window stops for slider windows for military housing in Asia. Will the Window Wedge work for slider windows? We don't want to install window guards. Thanks. Valerie."

Answer: The Window Wedge fits on the window frame, not in the tracks. Make certain that the window frames are wide enough as Window Wedge® uses one 8 inch velcro strip to which you velcro the 4 inch wedge portion. This product is made in the USA. We asked you to have your customer measure the windows and they are 3/4 inch wide. We recommend that you have two wedges i.e. one package installed on each window. That is because a child pulling on a slider could possibly pull the unit out of the track.

Each window wedge loop strip is 8 inches long and 3/4 inches wide. The actual wedge section is 3.25 inches long.To open the window greater than four inches for cleaning, remove the wedge from the velcro loop portion of the window stopper.

To Install Window Wedge Window Stoppers On a Slider Window:

Close window. Clean window frame surface before application of loop strip.
Peel off backing of 8 inch loop strip and place in center of upper horizontal window frame (not on the glass)
Attach the Window Wedge® to the loop strip with the
two tines facing the adjacent window section.
Slide window open until contact is made with the Window Wedge®
Attach the second Window Wedge® unit to the bottom part of the
Adjust the position of the Window Wedge® so that the
window opening is 4 inches or less.
Note: For maximum child safety, maximum window opening should not exceed 4 inches.

To Install Window Wedge Window Stoppers On a Double Hung or Single Hung Window:

    Close the window
Clean the surface of the window trim prior to application. Do not attach to glass itself.
Peel off the backing from the 8 inch loop strip and place in the center of the upper window frame for a double hung or single hung window.
Attach the Window Wedge® to the loop strip.
Attach the second window wedge on the other side at the same height.
Open the window until it is stopped by the window wedge.
Note: For maximum child safety, maximum window opening should not exceed 4 inches.

Safe Home does offer bulk pricing on this product. Please contact us directly if you need over 144 packages.

Envirosept Furnace Panel Sizes Are Often Rounded Up to Next Whole Number

by Barbara 25. May 2011 10:38

Question about Envirosept Furnace Filter Panels and How to Choose the Correct Size.

Q: "I have bad allergies. I have a 5 ton Carrier HVAC system. I am currently using the disposable paper filters with the cardboard surrround. When I push the filter into the 1 inch furnace slot, the spring at the back causes the filter to buckle. My furnace slot is 21.5 x 23.25. Do you have an Envirosept to fit this size opening? Is this more effective than a paper filter? How does it work? Thanks. Bill"

Answer: In the furnace industry, furnace filter sizes are actually rounded up to the next whole number. (Thank you for your question because this was not a fact that was active in my mind!) I phoned the manufacturer and learned this and also that a 2 x 4 is actually 1.75 inches by 3.5 inches! Actually, in the first paragraph of every Envirosept Furnace Panel, Safe Home does give this information!

To determine the actual size of what you need, imagine a picture frame. You would measure that edge to edge across the top and the same up the side. That is how you measure a furnace filter. Then you pick the next larger furnace filter or furnace panel. Or you can remove the disposable furnace filter and measure it the same way.

In your situation, you would need the EnviroSept 22x23 Furnace Filter Panel,14 Filter Pads. This panel actually measures 21.5 inches by 23.25 inches, the measurements you gave me on the phone. This Envirosept includes 14 filter pads, two of which are in the furnace filter panel when it is delivered. So this filter size is rounded up if it is .5 inches for the 22 part and rounded down for the 23 part since your filter is 23.25 inches.

To get the most from your Envirosept, you need to run the fan continuously and change the filter pads regularly. This can mean every 3 to 4 weeks or even longer. We recommend that you check the panel after the first two weeks. Your choice then is to take the dirty primary filter and throw it out and use the secondary filter in the primary or first slot or replace both filter pads. Remember you do need an electrical outlet for this unit.

Thanks for your questions.

Grip On Helps Prevent Falls on Smooth Concrete Floors. Not Effective on Epoxy Coated or Polyaspartic Coated Floors.

by Barbara 25. May 2011 07:36

Question about using Grip On® with a epoxy coated concrete floor or polyaspartic flooring coating.

Q: " I need to put an anti-slip coating on epoxy coated concrete flooring or polyaspartic coated flooring I install. Will Grip On® work?" Thanks. Sam

Answer: I contacted the manufacturer for clarification on this interesting question. The answer is no. For an anti-slip floor, Grip On will not work after epoxy or polyaspartic coatings are applied to concret: the coatings fill the pores. What Grip On anti-slip floor solution does is fill in the pores invisibly to increase the resistance to slipping and falling. So Grip On® would not work in your situation. Also if you paint a concrete floor, the same situation occurs as the paint fills the pores.

One solution to your problem is to add a color dye to the concrete and use a water based xylene sealer: you want nothing to seal the pores of the floor as then it cannot be treated with Grip On®.

Why does Grip On work? All natural materials such as concrete, ceramic, marble, granite, terrazzo, quarry tile, slate, porcelain tile and bathtubs have natural voids in them. The larger the void, the more the surface of that material is slip resistant. This void creates a tread for you to walk on.  Ceramic or glazed tile, as well as porcelain, are coated to create a shiny finished look to a floor or fixture. These coatings fill in the natural voids up to 70%. When you walk on the dry surface, you would not notice that the voids are filled. But, when the surface is wet, the water fills in the remaining 30% of the void and that is why a floor becomes slippery not allowing any space between the water and the bottom of your foot creating a hydroplane effect. Grip On® microscopically treats the surface of your floor or fixture in a way that brings back the natural void via the treads in the surface material. So, when a floor or bathtub is wet, it still allows you to feel surefooted. Grip On® Anti Slip Solution is a clear, chemical treatment that increases the co-efficient of friction and the safety of the surface when wet.

We sell Grip On® in various sizes from 4 oz bottles to drums. Among the sizes are

We also sell Grip On in a pallet of four 55 gallon barrels. With the drums, the lid stays on. What you do is purchase a vacuum or hose pump from your local hardware store. The lid has one 4 inch hole and one 2 inch hole so you can pump the Grip On out into containers you use for your applicators for spreading.

Grip On®'s Simple Application Instructions:
  1. Clean and rinse area.
  2. Pour Grip On™ on surface.
  3. Mop or sponge area liberally.
  4. Let stand for 15 to 20 minutes.
  5. Rinse off with clean water.
  6. Area is now ready to use.

After treatment, do not wax. Wax fills in the enhanced read created by the Grip On™ treatment. Reapply every 2 years for bath and shower areas. Reapply every year for traffic areas.

Additional Questions and Answers about Grip On®:

Q: How does Grip On® Anti-Slip Solution work?
A: Grip On® Anti-Slip Solution is a process that increases the coefficient of friction on a tile floor or a porcelain bathtub. This is not a coating that can wear off: this is a process that creates a tread design on the mineral surface itself.

Q: Does the treated surface look or feel any different?
A: There is no discernible change in appearance. However, when wet, the feeling is SAFE!

Q: Why is there a need for Grip On® Anti-Slip Solution?
A: Slip/Fall accidents are the nation's #2 accidental killer. Over 9 million disabling injuries every year. Business insurance rates are skyrocketing. Increases of 25% annually are common.

Q: How long is the Grip On® guarantee?
A: 2 years for bathtubs and showers. 1 year for traffic areas.

Q: Is Grip On® Anti-Slip Solution difficult to apply?
A: No, Grip On® is easy to apply. One worker can treat hard surfaces at the rate of 600 square feet per hour, per worker. Bathtubs require less than 10 minutes with no strenuous work.

Q: Does Grip On® Anti-Slip Solution kill germs?
A: The chemical in Grip On® Anti-Slip Solution is known to inhibit bacterial and fungi growth and to kill some bacteria and fungi. Test data is being gathered on germ killing and will be available at a later date.

Q: If my floor is sealed, can I still use Grip On® Anti-Slip Solution?
A: Yes, Grip On® Anti-Slip Solution works through most floor seals and effectively applies the “invisible tread.” Two applications may be required for sealed floors.

Q: What if there is grease on my floor?
A: Grip On® Anti-Slip Solution loosens grease, making it easier to remove any grease on your floor. More than one application may be required. Once again, it may take more than one application. Grip On® Anti-Slip Solution will loosen all hardened grease on your floor.

Q: Can I wax over the Grip On® Anti-Slip Solution?
A: NO. Wax fills in the “invisible tread” that Grip On® Anti-Slip Solution placed on your floor. We recommend a dry buff to bring up the shine.

Q: Is Grip On® Anti-Slip Solution dangerous?
A: The level of danger is similar to household bleach. Similar cautions are on each bottle. Keep out of reach of children. Avoid eye contact. Wear rubber gloves. Use in ventilated area. Can be fatal if swallowed. Do not use on wood, vinyls or plastics

Tea Tree Oil in Kirks Transparent Glycerin Soap Reduces Skin Bacteria

by Barbara 24. May 2011 10:24

Question about the use of tea tree oil in Kirks Premium Tea Tree Oil Deodorant Soap, 6 Bars-BLUE

Q: "What is the purpose of tea tree oil in this deodorant soap? Thanks, Pete.

Answer: Tea tree oil helps reduce odors by reducing bacteria on the skin surface. According to the Wikipedia, "Tea tree oil has beneficial medical properties when applied topically, including antiseptic, antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral action. . ."

Kirks Transparent Glycerin Deodorant Soap also contains:

  • Natural Vegetable Extract: Reduces body odor.
  • Rosemary: Herb stimulates skin.
  • Sage: Heals and refreshes skin.
  • Peppermint: Natural oil reduces scent on body.
  • Fragrance: A light delicate herbal with floral background and woody undertones.

Because it is a high glycerin soap, Kirk's deodorant soap does not melt quickly like many soaps with lower levels of glycerin. It also is gentle on the skin.

Thank you for your question.

AirPura Whole House HVAC Air Purifiers, How Do They Differ?

by Barbara 21. May 2011 07:30

Question about the AirPura Whole House forced air heating and cooling system air purifiers.

Q: "I want to install an AirPura HVAC air filtration system. I don't know which one will meet my needs. Please explain what the units have in common and how they differ. Thanks. Sam.

Answer: All the AirPura systems are supplemental air cleaners, i.e. they bypass air from the central air flow, clean it and return it through the main system. All are made in Canada, not China. AirPura suggests you have a "tinsmith" or HVAC person cut the holes in your return air duct. Once connected to your return air duct, a portion of the main airflow is by-passed through the unit which purifies it and returns the clean air into the system. The Airpura unit can continue to filter and distribute clean air throughout your home even when your central air system is turned off. Even when your central air system is turned off the Airpura W600 can continue to filter and distribute clean air throughout your home.

Here are the common features of all AirPura Whole House Air Purifiers:

  • draws a portion of the main airflow as a by-pass, purifies it and returns the clean air into the system.
  • efficient 560 CFM fan motor ensures that no change in air pressure takes place in your central air system.
  • variable speed control, you choose the level of purification required: from OFF to MAX.]
  • save on your energy costs and help protect the environment by cleaning and recirculating your indoor air instead of heating or cooling outdoor air.
  • easy change pre-filter:simply unclip the input pipe and replace the pre-filter pad.
  • 18 lbs Carbon Filter
  • True HEPA filter Traps 99.97% of particles as small as 0.3 microns:40 sq ft HEPA filtration surface
  • Motor and electric parts out of the airflow:Other systems blow clean air over the motor and recontaminate it
  • One piece motor / fan assembly: Eliminates vibration problems where separate fan is attached to a shaft with a set screw. Compact motor / fan design allows more space for filtration
  • Powdercoat steel housing: Robust construction. No plastic vapors.
  • Felt Gaskets Seal the filter chamber: No off gassing from rubber seals
  • Unique pressure seal: The pressure seal system on the filter chamber ensures that all the impurities pass through the filters. Other systems allow dirty air to escape and fail to acheive their promised HEPA rating of 99.97% filtration.
  • Physical Size: 22" high, 15" wide
  • Effective for up to 2000 sq ft

These are the various units and what makes each unique:

  • Airpura R600-W: All Features Listed Above, ie. 18 lb carbon filter plus true HEPA filter. Use in a typical home up to 2000 sq. ft where you want better air quality.

  • Airpura V600-W: All Features Listed Above Plus Enhanced special blend carbon in the 18 lb carbon filter adsorbs VOCs and specific chemicals. True HEPA Filter. Use in a home up to 2000 sq. ft where you have exposure to ammonia, formaldehyde, etc.

  • Airpura UV600-W: UV Germicidal lamp sterilizes antigens, pathogens and mold spores as they are trapped on the filters.17 inches germicidal surface U shaped lamp: 2 times the length of other makes and 2 times as effective Plus 18 lb carbon filter plus true HEPA filter. Use in a home up to 2000 sq. feet. when you are concerned about mold, antigens, germs, etc.
  • Airpura P600-W:  TitanClean photocatalytic oxidizion technology targets VOCs, airborne chemicals and odors as well as mold, particles and microorganisms. Has a titanium dioxide reflector that works in conjunction with the Airpura'20 watt UV germicidal lamp. 18 lb. carbon filter, true HEPA filter. Use in home or business up to 2000 sq. ft. when you are concerned about reducing airborne chemicals to smaller safer compounds, until only carbon dioxide and water vapor are left. You can retrofit your UV600-W (a portable air cleaner) to use this reflector.
  • Airpura H600-W:  For allergy and asthma sufferers and full scale particle filtration. Hi-C carbon weave filter traps airborne chemicals and odors. 18 lb. carbon filter, True HEPA Filter. Use in a home up to 2000 sq. ft. where persons live with allergies to pollen, dust mites, dust, etc. as well as to chemical odors.
  • Airpura C600-W:  Extra large carbon bed ( 3 Inch) for maximum carbon adsorbtion. Especially effective for airborne chemicals and gases. 26 lb. carbon filter.  Special carbon blends available for specific chemical problems. HEPA-Barrier post filter traps particles. True HEPA Filter. For house or building up to 2000 sq. ft with HVAC forced air heating and air conditioning system.

So choose an AirPura whole house unit based upon your needs. Remember that if you have a house larger than 2000 sq. ft, the effectiveness of any of these units is greatly reduced. In many homes larger than 2000 sq. ft, there are 2 or more HVAC units depending upon the home size.

I hope this has helped you to make your decision. Thanks for your question.

Sincerely, Barbara

by Barbara 18. May 2011 11:26

Question about the Res-Q-Me Keychain Emergency Escape Tool, ORANGE and the LifeHammer® Escape Tool, Original, ORANGE

Q: "Are these the escape tools recently seen on the TV shows Doctor OZ, The Doctors, The Mythbusters and the Today Show? I am interested in purchasing some as gifts and for personal use. Recently there were several drownings near us where cars went into rivers or canals and the occupants could not get the doors open. Are they available in other colors? Thanks. Ted."

Answer: Yes, you are correct. All these shows emphasize safety in the home, in the workplace and while traveling. The products come in many colors. There are discounts on quantities. In fact, you can have them personalized although we recommend this be in a minimum of 100 units as set up fees must be charged. Both products can be used to cut seat belts and to break out non-laminated, i.e. side windows of cars. Often emergency personnel like firemen and police use them in rescues as well.

The available colors for Res-Q-Me escape tools include black, orange, pink, red, yellow, and blue. Part of the profit from each pink one sold goes to National Breast Cancer Detection.

Lifehammers are now made in two other colors besides orange i.e. black and in pink. Part of the profits from every pink LifeHammer are given to support Breast Cancer Awareness month with free exams for those who cannot afford them otherwise.

The Res-Q-Me in made in the USA. The LifeHammer is the original which is made in the Netherlands.

USA Made Loadcells Needed to Build a Set of Race Car Scales

by Barbara 16. May 2011 07:07

Question about which load cells are needed to build a set of race car scales

Q: "I am looking to build a set of race car scales and have come across your site.  I want to use load cells made in the USA if possible. I will need a load cell that can handle a maximum of 1000 lbs.  What product do you suggest? Thanks. David."

Answer: One of the Safe Home websites is LoadCellsUSA.com. All these load cells are made in the USA. Some parts may be imported, however. I contacted our manufacturer for his input since your request is somewhat complicated.

First, a load cell that can handle a maximum of 1000 lbs. for a race car scale or other vehicle scale is the SSB1K,AmCells SSB Type 1 Klb. Shear Beam Load Cell The SSB-1KLB Type Single-Ended Shear Beam Nickel Plated Load cell is made of Alloy steel. You would need 4 of these units if you are using a single platform.

Next, you would need a junction box and a digital read-out. What is recommended is the AmCells JBSM4 Junction Box for 2 to 4 Load Cells. This is a stainless steel box with summing card, handles 2 to 4 Load cells, meets IP67 standards and has signal trimming. Plus you would need a AmCells DIN3 Digital Weighing Indicator. The DIN3 digital scale indicator features a stainless steel housing, a push button key pad and a bright 1 inch tall LED display. The DIN3 will interface with all strain gauge load cell configurations.

If you plan to use 4 separate platforms, that will require consultation with our manufacturer. LoadCellsUSA.com sells a wide selections of load cells including S Type Single Point Shear Beam , special load cells such as mini and disk. LoadCellsUSA.com also sells accessories.

Thank you for your interesting question.

Sincerely, Barbara

Which Safe Escape Smoke Hoods Are Being Purchased for Use in Jails?

by Barbara 15. May 2011 10:01

Question about the Safe Escape Chem Bio Smoke Fire Gas Escape Hood and the Safe Escape 30 minute in the hard case.

Q: "I work in a county jail. Which of the smoke hoods are you selling for use in jails and prisons? Can you connect me with some of your customers so I can make a better decision as to why certain smoke hoods were purchased? Thanks. Brad"

Answer: What I did was contact two of my most recent customers to get their permission to speak with Brad. One customer in Oregon purchased 100 of the Safe Escape 30 minute in the hard case and the other purchased 20 of the Safe Escape Chem Bio Smoke Fire Gas Escape Hood. I explained to my prospective customer that there was confidentiality about our customers, that I needed to contact them to get their verbal permission and to share his name and contact information with them as well.

The Chem Bio Smoke hood is more expensive but protects against many more toxic gasses that can result from burning items. The hard case 30 minute smoke and fire hoods can be hung on a wall convenient to the prison guards or police officers.

Both my Oregon customer and my Florida customer graciously agreed to share their reasoning for their purchases and both the customers and my prospective Floridian customer were given contact information.

We thank our prospective customer for asking his customer and our other law enforcement customers for helping both him and Safe Home.  If you have any questions about any of our smoke hoods, please contact us.

Real Lambswool Wheelchair Cushion Cover and Arm Rest Covers Superior to Synthetic for Comfort

by Barbara 15. May 2011 09:17

Question about the Lambswool Covers for Wheelchair Arm Rests and for Lambswool Wheelchair Covers for Wheelchair Cushions.

Q: "I want my mother's wheelchair to be as comfortable as possible. What is the advantage of real lambswool over synthetic? How large are your Rittenhouse Mediwool lambs wool arm rest covers and cushion covers? Thanks. Sandy.

Answer:  The natural lambswool products we sell are made from a very soft lambswool sliver knit into a polyester backing. That means that the products are machine washable. They can be air dried or dried on delicate in your dryer.  Natural lambswool is absorbent yet keeps arms cooler in hot weather and warmer in cold weather. The lambs wool helps to prevent pressure sores as well as making the surfaces more comfortable for arms and backside. Lambswool is a naturally disinfecting fiber so heat is not needed to disinfect. Plus lambswool resists bacteria and dust mite development. Artificial lambwool does not have these qualities. The lambswool looks and feels like a one inch lamb pelt without the problems associated with that, i.e. no machine washing and a lamb dies to give the pelt.  Mediwool merino wool products by Rittenhouse Industries and Snugglewool are Made in USA.

The cushion cover measures 19 inches by 19 inches so it fits most wheelchair cushions. The arm rest covers measure 18 inches long by 8 inches around and are secured by velcro strieach velcro closure is 4 inches in from the end. The closure strip itself is 3/4 inch wide and about 1 5/8 inches long. The strip attaches to a sewn on strip that is about 1.25 inches long. That means you get the full 8 inches for the wheelchair arm rest.

If you have more questions, please contact Safe Home.

Thanks for your question.

Sincerely,

Barbara
