Survival Kits and Emergency Water Options for Home or Business Emergency Preparedness

by Barbara 26. November 2011 13:44

Question about choosing a survival kit and survival supplies for home use.

Q:"We are a family of 4 who live on an island off the coast of North Carolina. Typically we have some advance warning that hurricane force winds are on the way. We need emergency water and food in case power stays off for more than a few days. Our fear is that our generator may fail and we'll have nothing but canned food. Or we may have to evacuate inland and will have trouble finding food. What are your recommendations? Thanks. Sue."

Answer: For a family of 4, the Small Business/Family Support Emergency Survival Kit would give your family a complete survival kit for 5 people for up to 3 days. You could supplement this with food you have on hand.  The food bars and water packets have a 5 year shelf life.

This 3 Day/5 Person Survival Kit Contents Include:

  • food bars which are Kosher and meet Halal standards
  • water rations
  • matches
  • emergency blankets
  • candles
  • emergency guidebook
  • work gloves
  • infectious waste bags
  • pliers
  • whistle
  • playing cards
  • water purification tablets
  • duct tape
  • utility bags
  • carrying case
  • tissue packs
  • AM/FM radio with battery
  • flashlights with batteries
  • rope
  • candles
  • survival knife kit
  • pry bar
  • adhesive bandages
  • instant cold pack
  • mouthwash
  • alcohol wipes
  • adhesive tapes
  • sanitary pads
  • anti-diarrhea tablets
  • scissors
  • aspirin
  • splints
  • dust masks
  • tongue depressors
  • elastic bandage
  • toothache kit
  • first aid cream
  • towelettes
  • gauze pads
  • tweezers
  • gauze rolls

You could also purchase the food bars and water packets separately. For example, a good choice would be the Survivor Industries Mainstay 3600 Emergency Food Bars, 90 Bars This package contains 90 food bars that each supply 400 calories. So depending upon the size of the person and his/her activity level, 3 to 6 bars per day would keep this person with proper nutrition. If you were remaining at home,

Mainstay 3600 Emergency Food Bar Key Benefits:

  • 5 year Shelf Life
  • Non-Thirst Provoking
  • Withstands Temperatures of -40° F to 300°F (-40°C to 149°C)
  • Ready to Eat: Each package contains 9 pre-measured 400 calorie meals.
  • Individualized Portions eliminate the messy breaking-up that occurs with other bars
  • Allows for on-land emergency consumption in a high-stress active situation.
  • Contains no cholesterol or tropical oils.
  • Meets the US Coast Guard standards (160.046/23/0). Its new modern packaging even meets the stringent guidelines set by the Department of Defense (SOLAS 74/83).
  • Enriched with vitamins and minerals exceeding the RDA requirements.
  • Pleasant lemon flavor which appeals to everyone.
  • Mainstay™ meets the dictates for Halal and is Kosher

I suggest that you either purchase the Survivor Industries Mainstay Emergency Drinking Water Pack, 4.2 Oz, 60/CS or an AquaPod Kit Deluxe Emergency Water Storage Kit. Minimum water requirements for survival are two of the 4.2 ounce packets per day. The AquaPod Kit is unique: prior to losing power from your well, you place this kit in a bathtub and fill it with cold water.

Each Aqua Pod Deluxe Kit Contains:

  • 3 disposable tub liners, each 40 inches by 80 inches. This will fit in a Jacuzzi tub or standard 5 feet tub. An average tub holds 70 gallons.
  • 3 disposable tie clamps to hold the bag to water spigot during the approximate 10 minute time that it takes to fill the bag. (Dependent upon water pressure.)
  • 1 reusable pump with locking system. Locks the pump to the liner bag.

The AquaPod liner is made from FDA approved plastic, i.e. LDPE Plastic (Low Density Polyethylene Plastic). The shelf life is up to 10 years depending upon storage. Made in the USA.

I also recommend you purchase a copy of Wallace Guidebook for Emergency Care and Survival. This inexpensive book may literally save your life.

Thank you for your questions:

Comfortable Brondell Breeza Heated Toilet Seats Get Rid of Bathroom Odors

by Barbara 19. November 2011 15:18

Question about the Brondell Breeza toilet seats, the Breeza Warm Round, White Deodorizing and Heated BR60-EW Heated Toilet Seat and the Brondell Breeza Round White Deodorizing Toilet Seat BR30-RW.

Q: "My bathroom gets really cold in the winter. I don't want to use a space heater or increase the furnace temperature as we use an electric blanket on our bed. There is nothing worse than sitting down on a cold plastic toilet seat at night. How does the Breeza Warm work? I have a round toilet bowl. Does this use a lot of power? How warm does it get? Thanks. Mary"

Answer: The Breeze Warm uses as much power as a 25 watt light bulb. It does require connection to a GFI (ground fault interrupter) outlet. This heated toilet seat from Brondell comes with a 4 foot long cord. You can extend this by using an approved heavy duty extension cord. There is a "Set and Forget" power saver mode if you want the heat to be off when you choose. The seat heats can be 97, 104 or 107 degrees F.: you choose.

Anorther advantage is that the Breeza toilet seat reduces and/or eliminates bathroom odors. In the rear of the seat is a quiet fan that draws air through a replaceable carbon air filter. The air is then pulled through a natural fragrance cartridge vent from the seat rear into your bathroom Choices of scents are citrus eucalyptus, jasmine lavender and rainforest. You can also try all three in the variety pack which features one of each scent.. The other vent scents come in packages of 3 units. The carbon filter lasts about 6 months. Each cartridge lasts about a month.

The seat itself is made from antimicrobial material which is easily cleaned. This is a soft close style seat and lid so putting the seat and lid down is very quiet. The lid is sittable, however. The unit has a sensor that turns the fan and the scent on and off when a person sits down and gets up. Below are the features summarized.

Breeza Warm Round White Deodorizing Toilet Seat (BR60-RW) Features:
  • Color : WhiteType/Shape: Round
  • Filter : Activated carbon filter, filter life is 6 months
  • Vents : Extract-infused fragrance vents, vent life is 1 month
  • Control : One touch control panel for deodorizing and temperature settings
  • Design : contoured, gentle-closing, antimicrobial seat and lid
  • Temperature : Can be adjusted to 3 levels
  • Body Sensor : Switches deodorizing system on and off automatically
  • Power : plugged into a standard GFI wall outlet (max. 4 feet distance from the toilet fixture)
  • Power Saver Mode : Set and Forget feature, the power saver mode automatically switches on and off when toilet seat is not used
  • 5 year limited warranty

The only concern to have is that you might find yourself spending more time reading that great mystery novel long after you should have flushed the toilet and gone to bed!

Thank you for your questions.

Sincerely, Barbara

IMS-1000 Sensaphone, No Land Line Required, Infrastructure Monitoring System Uses Ethernet Network.

by Barbara 13. November 2011 10:32

Question about the Sensaphone IMS-1000 Remote Monitoring System.

Q: "I have a computer room I need to monitor for humidity, power and temperature. There is no land line in that room. Is the IMS-1000 system the best choice? What sensors will I need to add?  How does this unit mount? I have computer racks in the room. Thanks. Ed."

Answer: Sensaphone designed the IMS or Infrastructure Monitoring System for situations like yours where there is no land line available. It does require an ethernet network. And you can rack mount this monitor into your computer rack. Dimensions (H x W x D): 1.75" x 14" x 7"

The IMS-1000 series of products includes the following key features:

  • Eight sensor inputs to monitor environmental conditions and/or alarm contacts from other computer equipment such as UPS systems.
  • 10/100BASE-T Ethernet port.
  • Internal battery backup for uninterrupted performance.
  • Compact design allows rack-mount, wall-mount, or tabletop installation.
  • Embedded web page to program and manage your IMS-1000 system.

Per Sensaphone's manual for the IMS-1000:

"The system is designed to be a comprehensive method of ensuring 100% up-time of your computer systems. By monitoring all aspects of your computer room, including environmental conditions and network equipment, the system will keep you informed of the status of your infrastructure. Monitored conditions can include temperature levels, humidity levels, line voltage, leak detection, server response, UPS systems, and more. The system allows the computer professional to be notified immediately of any detected problems. Notification can occur via voice telephone call, pager, e-mail, fax or snmp trap. An internal battery backup system insures that the unit will continue to run if main power fails."

Sensaphone does caution: "Caution: The IMS sensors are not TCP/IP devices and therefore should not be connected directly to any wiring infrastructure that is connected to network equipment such as a hub, router, or switch. Sensors use RJ-45 plugs and cables similar to thoseused with Ethernet devices".

Environmental Sensors Needed for Your Computer Room Include:

  • Sensaphone Temperature Sensor 4810 for IMS-1000,4000 The temperature sensor connects to the IMS-1000 via an RJ-45 cable (e.g. CAT5 cable). The connection from the sensor to the IMS-1000 can utilize your existing network wiring infrastructure. For example, the sensor may be installed in another room or another floor. Connect the sensor to your structured wiring network via an RJ-45 jack. At the other end, connect a patch cable from your structured wiring patch panel directly to the IMS-1000 environment input.
  • Sensaphone Humidity Sensor 4820 for IMS-1000,4000 The IMS-4820 Room Humidity Sensor operates between 32° to 122°F (0° to 50°C)and Humidity ranges of 0 to 100% RH. Accuracy is ± 5%. This unit also connects with RJ-45 cable (not included).
  • Sensaphone 4840 External Power Failure Sensor for IMS-1000, 4000 This will handle your worries about power outages. The range is 0 to 250 VAC, 50/60 Hz with an accuracy of ± 2%. The power connection is via a Universal IEC-320 power inlet.

There are several other options as well. These are the:

If you have additional questions, please contact us. Sensaphone does update sensors and remote monitors periodically so product codes and specifications may change.

Thanks for your question.
