How To Choose the Best Furnace Filter for Your HVAC System

by Barbara 4. November 2015 04:56

Question: How do I choose a furnace filter for my HVAC system?

Answer: Always check with your HVAC technician prior to replacing your furnace filter. He or she is knowledgable about the air duct capacity and motor capacity of your system. Another option is to match the furnace filter in your system with another that is the same MERV rating or  MPR (Microparticle Performance Rating)‎. Explain that the 1 inch filter has an internal frame, that no air can go around it. Similarly the 4 inch thick unit is made to fit a 4 or 5 inch filter slot.

The buyer of a furnace filter must assume responsibility for his or her choice of furnace filters. No on-line company nor box store knows the age, the air duct capacity, the motor capacity, etc. of your HVAC system. Only your HVAC technician is qualified to determine the density of a filter that will work in your furnace and cause no problems.

Safe Home internal frame filters have two layers of media. The white side must be inserted into the filter panel so that the air flow goes through that part first. With the internal metal frame, this filter fits very tightly into the opening. No air can go around it. Your HVAC technician needs to know that this is an internal frame filter with no air escaping around it.

The Safe Home Duo 4 filters are also made to fit very tightly in the filter holder. This unit is also marked so it must be installed so that the air flow goes through the filter in the correct direction. Again it is important that your HVAC technician be aware of this tight fit. These units replace 4 or 5 inch thick filters. Always insert so that airflow goes first through the white side.

Thanks for your question.

Peak Flow Meter Measures Lung Capacity for Asthma and Allergy Patients

by Barbara 15. April 2011 06:04

Question about Peak Flow Meters

Q: "My physician suggests I purchase a Peak Flow Meter. I occasionally have asthma attacks. What is a peak flow meter? What does it measure? Which one do you suggest? Thanks. Bill"

Answer: A peak flow meter is a device into which you blow that measures the liters per minute of air that you can expel from your lungs. Peak flow readings are higher when patients are well because airways are open, rather than comstricted as occurs when lungs are congested.  By knowing what someone's best peak flow is helps physician's decide what medications are or are not needed for asthma and other chronic lung diseases. Checking lung capacity with a peak flow meter during an asthma attack gives an indication of the severity of the attack.

I am currently taking allergy shots once more, my third series, my first since ending the second in 1992. Why? I am having more serious problems with grasses, pollens, cats, etc. that keep me from enjoying the indoors and the outdoors. So for at least the next four years, every time I see my allergist for shots, I will be using a peak flow meter prior to injections. When I was first examined, peak flow readings were taken with an electronic monitor. Now, I use a small portable, manual type unit with replaceable mouthpiece before each injection session. Usually I blow between a 375 and a 420, considered normal for my age, gender and height.

According to WebMD.com, "The peak flow meter works by measuring how fast air comes out of the lungs when you exhale forcefully after inhaling fully. This measure is called a "peak expiratory flow," or "PEF." Keeping track of your PEF, is one way you can know if your symptoms of asthma are in control or worsening."

This is how you use a Peak Flow Meter according to WebMED.com.

  1. Stand up or sit up straight.
  2. Make sure the indicator is at the bottom of the meter (zero).
  3. Take a deep breath in, filling the lungs completely.
  4. Place the mouthpiece in your mouth; lightly bite with your teeth and close your lips on it. Be sure your tongue is away from the mouthpiece.
  5. Blast the air out as hard and as fast as possible in a single blow.

"Normal" readings on based upon gender, height and age. The Omron Peak Flow meter gives red, green and yellow readings as well as numbers. Red means you need to use a bronchial dilator immediately. Another option is the Medline Personal Best Peak Flow Meter, 12/Case which will soon be available as an individual unit.

I hope this answers your questions.

Thanks for your questions.

Sincerely,

Barbara

Disposable Furnace Filters for Allergens, Formaldehyde and Other Chemicals.

by Barbara 28. July 2010 07:00

Question about the Safe Home Duo Air Purify Furnace Filter 16 x 20 x 1 In.

Q:"My furnace in our second home has a one inch filter slot. We run the furnace only in the winter. We have older carpeting and pressed wood cabinets in the kitchen that we think are out-gassing formaldehyde. We've considered an Amaircare whole house system but the cost is high for the frequency of use of our second home. How would your furnace filter help with the formaldehyde problem? We have a 16 x 20 c 1 inch filter slot. Thanks. John."

Answer: I recommend the Safe Home air purification furnace filter because it is so effective. This is a dual filter with a MERV rating of 8. MERV ratil layered polyester filter. There is a white pre-filter attached to a second polyester filter with embedded activated carbon and potassium permanganate. This air purifier filter has an internal steel frame. The polyester extends slightly beyond the metal frame so the filter seals very tightly in the slot. That way allergens, gasses, etc. cannot go around the filter edges.

The white polyester outer layer first receives the air flow: it removes pollen, mold spores, and other common allergens. The second layer features FormaldaSorb™ (potassium permanganate) and activated carbon that traps odors and hazardous gasses, such as formaldehyde, ammonia, and others. These are emitted by cleaning chemicals, paint, particle board, and other household items. No other one inch furnace filters are as effective at removing dust mites, mold spores, pollen, odors, cleaning chemicals, ozone, paint fumes, and common gasses like formaldehyde which triggers asthma and allergies.

The SafeHome Duo utilizes polyester layers as a prefilter and uses carbon and FormaldaSorb injected fibers for further filtration. This filter design uses mechanical filtration which offers the advantage of increased filtration efficiency over time because the particles themselves become part of the filter and there is no reliance on electrostatic charges which degrade over time. Mechanical filtration is particularly advantageous in humid areas or near kitchens because humidity and vapors significantly degrade pleated air filters’ electrostatic charge. By containing multiple densities of material, Duo filters are able to capture more particles while maintaining proper air resistance.

Safe Home Duo Filter Features:

  • Dimensions: 16" x 20" x 1"
  • Captures up to 95% of common household allergens
  • Eliminates odors from pets, paint, cooking, and more
  • Uses high density carbon and advanced compounds
  • FormaldaSorb™ traps hazardous gasses
  • Highly effective and affordable

Change the Duo at least every 3 months. Some conditions may require more frequent changes due to increased pollutants. Examples: furry pets, construction work, painting and smoking.

There are other filter sizes from which to choose as well. These include 12 x 12 x 1, 12 x 24 x 1, 14 x 14 x 1, 14 x 24 x 1, 12 x 25 x 1, 14 x 30 x 1, 20 x 20 x 1, 20 x 25 x 1, 20 x 30 x 1, and 24 x 24 x 1. If you need a custom size, contact us. There is a minimum of 12 units required for custom sizes. We'll get a quote to you in response to your email.

Thanks for your question.

How Do Rest-Guard Mattress Covers Differ from Other Mattress and Box Spring Covers?

by Barbara 14. February 2010 07:08

Question about the Rest-Guard fitted and zippered encasement mattress covers.

Q: "My family members have many allergies. We'd like to know how the Rest-Guard mattress covers differ from the cotton covers we are currently using. Thanks. Susan"

Answer: Rest-Guard are soft cotton bonded to polyurethane so they are cool to sleep on and also are water proof.  The Rest-Guard standard covers are fitted like a fitted bottom sheet. The Rest-Guard full enclosure covers are zippered. For most people, the fitted Rest-Guard covers are the better choice. These are also available in several thicknesses and many more sizes than the complete enclosure covers. For older mattresses and box springs or for those with bed bug infestation, the full enclosure covers are the better coice. The best way to show you the differences is via a comparison chart.

Rest-Guard Protects New Twin Mattress for Recently Toilet Trained Son

by Barbara 24. September 2009 08:44

Question about the product Rest-Guard Twin 15 Inch High Mattress Cover

Q: "We are moving our son from his crib with its vinyl covered mattress to a twin bed within the next month. He was recently toilet trained and we guess he may have a few accidents yet in the next year. Is this mattress cover the best choice for us?  The new mattress is 15 inches high." Thanks. Susan

Answer: I do recommend this mattress cover. To make your life easier, I suggest you buy at least two covers. That way if he does have an accident during the night, you can change the bed then, if he wakes up, or the next morning and have the bed ready for his afternoon nap. These mattress covers are comfortable to sleep on, too. In the days when my sons were young, the only options were a plastic mattress cover which was either hot or cold unless you topped it with a mattress pad. I recall having quite a collection of mattress pads and sheets.

The Rest-Guard covers are virtually identical to Protect-A-Bed covers. They are hot water washable and dryable on low or line dry. My grandkids find them quite comfortable since they are cotton and polyester and absorbent. They keep dust mites in the mattress, too. We also sell total mattress encasements in all sizes and heights.

Thanks for your question.

Sincerely, Barbara

Help! My Mattress is Infested With Bedbugs!

by Barbara 18. September 2009 08:40

Question about the king bedbug mattress and box spring protectors

Q: "What do I do now? My husband must have brought home bedbugs in his suitcase. We are itching and scratching. We've called an exterminator but he says there is no way to treat the mattress and box springs which were very expensive pillow tops." Thanks. Karyn

Answer: I recommend you cover both the mattress and box spring with individual Rest-Guard Deluxe King Bed total encasements that are 20 inches high. Also use Rest-Guard total encasement pillow covers on all your pillows in the bedroom and then cover your mattress with a fitted Rest-Guard waterproof mattress cover.

Any bed bugs you seal up in the Rest-Guard "Fully-enclosed" mattress covers will be trapped inside and will not be able to escape and will eventually die, the reason is because the inside of our covers are specially designed with a waterproof polyurethane backing on all six sides and have a re-enforced zipper liner which have smaller teeth, this prevents bedbugs and their eggs from escaping through the zipper teeth, which means you will not have to dis-guard your bed bug infested mattress or Box spring. Our manufacturer Rest-Guard recommends keeping the mattress covers intact for at least 12 months (bed bugs can live a very long time without feeding). The bed bugs and eggs inside will die, and the mattress is protected from further infestation.

Below are some notes from their website:

** Note: For cleaning & hygienic reasons, we suggest purchasing the Rest-Guard Fitted sheet Mattress protector, and place this cover over the fully-enclosed cover, simply remove the fitted sheet protector cover every 2-3 weeks and machine wash & dry as mentioned above and replace for continued protection.

** Note: Mattress covers can only trap bed bugs that are hiding on your mattress. You should also fully enclose your box spring as well to complete your bedding protection for both bed bugs and allergens. However, these covers will not protect you from other bed bugs hiding in your bedroom. For complete elimination of bed bugs from your bedroom and your home, you will need to contact a pest extermination specialist who understands how to rid your home of bed bugs.

Hope this helps. All is saved, not lost.

Thanks for your question.

Sincerely, Barbara

What Size Rest-Guard Waterproof Mattress Cover Fits a 105 cm x 200 cm Mattress?

by Barbara 19. May 2008 08:40

Question about Rest-Guard mattress covers.

Hello, I am interested in this kind of products. My bed is 105 cm by 200 cm. Do you offer any solution for this size? And to what price?"

Answer: To answer your question, I first went to a website and converted the centimeters to inches. Your bed is 41.3 inches wide by 78.7 inches long. An twin extra long mattress is 38 Inches by 80 Inches by 12 Inches. If your mattress is not over 14 inches thick, this cover would fit. The waterproof protection would not cover the entire width of the mattress (short by 3.3 inches total or just over 1.5 inches on a side. The skirt on this bed stretches to fit over mattresses of various sizes so the cover would fit just fine.

To see the current price, please click through on the blue "twin extra long".

Thanks for your question. And for other customers in similar situations, please convert the centimeters to inches and then choose the size closest to the converted size in inches. If you have questions, please contact us prior to purchase.

Sincerely,
Barbara
