Formaldezorb Filter Advantages Over Pure Carbon in VOC Canisters and Furnace Filters

by Barbara 10. June 2016 06:11

Question about Amaircare VOC Canister Filter 8 Inch For Amaircare 2500 Air Cleanersand the Safe Home Duo Air Purify Furnace Filter 20x25x4 In.

Questions: "What advantages are there in adding the Amaircare VOC canister filter to my Amaircare 2500? And why would I use a Safe Home Duo filter with Formaldezorb as my HVAC filter? We are very sensitive to chemicals. Thanks. Mary.

Answer: Both filters use formaldezorb with carbon to capture odors as well as formaldehyde.

Amaircare VOC Canister filters are available for all sizes of Amaircare portable air purifiers as well as many of the industrial ones and HVAC units .Amaircare’s standard VOC Canisters capture approximately 20% aldehydes (including formaldehyde) in a single pass. Amaircare’s Formaldezorb VOC Canister is a proprietary specialty activated solid carbon that is chemically modified on the surface with a compound specifically targeting formaldehyde and other aldehydes. Formaldehyde being the most reactive aldehyde, binds to the surface of the modified carbon in a highly effective manner. Based on this specially formulated process, Amaircare Formaldezorb VOC Canisters remove 60% to 75% of formaldehyde in a single pass. The high performance removal of the Formaldezorb VOC Canister is specified by healthcare professionals in the USA and Canada where exposure to formaldehyde is a current and growing health concern since recognition by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as a known carcinogen.

Safe Home Duo HVAC filters come in 1 inch and 4 inch sizes. The one inch sizes have an internal metal frame with self-sealing edges. The four inch ones use pleated filter media: the outside of the filter has sealing strips. Again the idea is to have no unfiltered air go around the filter.

Polyester media filter with chemical filter uses 300 grams/sq. ft. of 50/50 activated carbon and potassium permanganate based FormaldaSorb™ to trap gases, odors and chemicals including formaldehyde, benzene, toluene, ammonia and ozone. No other filters are as effective at removing dust mites, mold spores, pollen, odors, cleaning chemicals, ozone, paint fumes, and common gasses like formaldehyde which triggers asthma and allergies.  Made in USA. Captures up to 95% of common household allergens. Eliminates odors from pets, paint, cooking and more. High density carbon plus advanced compound, FormaldaSorb™, a patented potassium permanganate product, in second layer.

Filter life depends upon how much dust, dirt, chemicals etc are in your interior air. The VOC filter typically lasts 1 year. Furnace filter life is usually 3 months.
We urge that you consult your HVAC technician before purchasing any furnace filter. The Safe Home Duo filters have a MERV 8 rating which works in most newer (as in last 20 years) HVAC systems. If a MERV rating is too high for your unit, air flow is restricted and damage to the furnace may occur.  Go to Safe Home Products.com to see the various filter sizes available for Amaircare and HVAC systems. Just enter Amaircare VOC Filter or Safe Home Duo in the search box on the left.

Thank you for your questions.

Amaircare Portable Air Purifier Replacement HEPA Filters, Moulded or Twist On?

by Barbara 25. April 2016 08:23

Question about changing HEPA Filters in Amaircare Portable Air Purifiers. Amaircare HEPA Filter Air Purifier Model 3000.

Q: "Which HEPA filter fits my Amaircare 3000 portable air cleaner? Thanks." Paul.

Answer: Paul, the date of manufacture is important. All Amaircare 3000 and 2500 air purifiers made in 2016 take a 16 Inch Easy Twist HEPA Filter. Units made prior to 2016 take 16 Inch Moulded HEPA Filter. The other filter kits have changed a little, i.e. the number of filters have changed and the types of filters.

HEPA filters usually are effective for 2 to 3 years if pre-filters are changed regularly. Another variable is the amount of dust, dirt, etc. in the air around the unit. Wipe off the outside of the metal cabinet weekly or more often. Change the outer filter every 3 to 4 months. Change the inner filter every 6 months. You can vacuum dust off the outer filter with a vacuum cleaner. The woven material is a carbon blanket as is the inner filter. Neither are washable. Carbon blanket media removes VOC's (volatile organic compounds like formaldehyde, paint thinner, etc.)

Americair manufactures its own Amaircare® brand HEPA filters in Canada. Filament is bonded to air filter media for structural support and even pleat spacing. After pleating, filters are enclosed in protective screens and cast in food-grade plastisol at both ends for a 100% air seal. 100 square feet of HEPA filtration material captures the smallest particulates. Each Amaircare HEPA filter is then tested for 99.97% efficiency, with a laser particle counter.

The Amaircare 3000 Moulded HEPA filter is a 16 inch cartridge filter that also fits the Amaircare 3050 and and Amaircare 4000. (These units are no longer made.) The same intervals should be followed for the other Amaircare air purifiers which include the Amaircare 2500 and the Roomaid with the VOC canister filter or with the standard HEPA and pre- and post-filters. VOC cartridge filters can be added to all these air purifiers.

The Amaircare 16 Inch Moulded Plus Annual Kit with a Formaldezorb VOC Cartridge and Two Pre-Filters is one of our best sellers. If you are sensitive to volatile organic compounds, this is a great choice. VOC's are emitted from varnish, wood burning, bathroom sprays, cleaning compounds, etc.

Important: Always replace a HEPA air filter if an air purifier is turned off for more than 3 to 5 days. HEPA is a medium in which bacteria, viruses, etc. can grow if moisture collects in the filter media. Constant air flow keeps the HEPA filter media dry and free of such contaminants. Every few weeks, I take my canister vacuum cleaner into the bedroom, remove the outer filter, lay it on the floor and vacuum it off with the floor tool. Then I wipe out the interior with a microfiber cloth.

Thank you for your question.

Sincerely, Barbara

Amaircare Car Air Purifiers Remove Dust, Pollen, Exhaust Fumes, Etc. for Easier Breathing

by Barbara 12. July 2012 10:22

Question about allergy air filters for cars.

Q: "We live in LA. Even with the car windows closed and the AC on, we find our allergies active and the air quality poor. What car air purifiers do you suggest that would thoroughly clean the air in an enclosed car or truck. Thanks. Juli."

Answer; If you want an air filtration system, our suggestions are either of the two Amaircare units described below.

Amaircare XR100 Auto Air Filter Purifier w/12V Plug or the Roomaid Amaircare HEPA Air Purifier in Slate.Concerned about VOC's? Buy the Roomaid in Slate color with optional VOC cartridge. Use in your car or truck with the optional 12 Volt DC Auto Cord Kit for Roomaid Air Purifier The Roomaid also comes in Pure White and in Pure White with VOC Cartridge

The Amaircare XR100 is made especially for use in vehicles. There is an optional AC cord package available. The strong points of this unit include:

  • Three Stage Filtration Process: Air is drawn into the top of the unit and filters through a three-stage filter cartridge. Purified air is then discharged in all directions through the screened opening around the circumference of the unit.

Stage 1: Large particles, odors: Activated carbon 200% impregnated non-woven, fire retardant, polyester filter media.
Stage 2: Sub-micron particles: Electret charged filter media attracts and holds sub-micron particles in the air such as dust, pollen, cigarette smoke, bacteria, vehicle emissions, etc.
Stage 3: V.O.C.'s: Air exits the main filter cartridge and passes through a zeolite impregnated non-woven, polyester filter. This final air filtration stage absorbs additional gaseous contaminants.
  • Amaircare XR-100 has a high efficiency backward-curved motor/blower for 12 volt or 120 volts use (AC-DC adapter is not included.) Filter rate is 20 cubic feet per minute or 1,200 cubic feet per hour. In the typical car, the hourly air turnover is 1000% or up to ten air exchanges hourly. Better quality air occurs with every cycle.
  • Easy to Install. Takes Up Virtually No Space. The Amaircare XR-100 easily mounts to a car seat back with supplied mounting strap.
  • Easy Plug-in Cigarette Lighter Adapter: Adapter has a seven foot cord.
  • Powerful Motor/Fan: Motors are run tested for 35,000 hours of operation.

There are replacement filters available for both car air filtration units. The main differences are the size, the weight, the number of speeds, and the type of filters used. The Roomaid uses a true HEPA filter plus a VOC filter. The XR-100 uses a three stage media filter with activated carbon, zeolite and an electret charged filter medi. Prices and filter replacement costs, of course, are different as well.

Thank you for your question. Either unit would reduce allergy symptoms and clean the air in your car. We sell more of the XR-100 units for vehicles because they take up less space and hang on the back of a car seat.

Barbara

HEPA Filter Cartridge on Amaircare 3000 Portable Air Purifier-How Often to Change the Filter?

by Barbara 12. July 2010 13:48

Question about the Amaircare HEPA Filter Air Purifier Model 3000.

Q: "How often should I change the HEPA filter in my Amaircare 3000 portable air cleaner? I have cats and dogs and use it in my bedroom because my husband is allergic. Thanks." Susan

Answer: Usually the HEPA is changed every 2 to 3 years depending upon where the air purifier is used. What is as important is to wipe off the outside of the metal cabinet regularly and to change the pre-filters and inner filters regularly. Typically the outer filter is changed every 3 to 4 months and the inner filter every 6 months. The outer filter is made from foam and can be washed with detergent and water. The inner filter is made from a pure carbon blanket media that removes VOC's (volatile organic compounds like formaldehyde, paint thinner, etc.) and is not washable.

The Amaircare 3000 HEPA filter is a 16 inch cartridge filter that also fits the Amaircare 3050 and and Amaircare 4000. (These units are no longer made.) The same intervals should be followed for the other Amaircare air purifiers which include the Amaircare 2500 and the Roomaid with the VOC canister filter or with the standard HEPA and pre- and post-filters. There are also VOC cartridge filters that can be added to all these air purifiers.

I confess that I take my canister vacuum cleaner into the bedroom, remove the outer filter, lay it on the floor and vacuum it off with the floor tool every few weeks. We have two Boston Terriers  and two cats so the dust raised is incredible. I wipe out the interior with a microfiber cloth.

Thank you for your question.

Maintaining an Amaircare Roomaid HEPA Air Purifier

by Barbara 12. June 2009 09:25

Question about the Roomaid Air Purifier.

Q: "I am interested in purchasing the Roomaid since I understand the unit can be operated both in a motor home or car on a 12VDC power adapter and also on standard AC power. My concern is maintaining the unit. What is involved with that? Do you have any personal experience with the unit? Thanks. Mary

Answer: The Roomaid is made in Canada by Amaircare. I've run a "white" ( it is really cream colored) Roomaid in my home office continuously (except for when I wash the prefilters) for over 9 years. I've changed the HEPA once and the pre-filter maybe 4 times. By the way, I have allergies and have run an Amaircare 3000 continuously in our bedroom for 9 years as well. Original motors still purr along quietly. (German motors.)

Both units are especially needed since Buddy the Siamese cat joined the family a year ago. Since Buddy likes to sleep in his cat bed right next to my monitor, the Roomaid prefilter does pick up a lot of cat hair over the course of a month (don't believe everything you read about Siamese shedding very little). The annual filter kit includes both pre and post filters There is also an optional VOC carbon filter if you are sensitive to formaldehyde or other volatile organic compounds.

To maintain the unit, turn the unit off and wash the prefilters in soapy water, rinse thoroughly and allow to dry. Remember that HEPA filters can become a source of mold or bacterial growth if air does not move through them nearly continuously. Never have an air purifier with a HEPA filter sit idle for more than 3 or 4 days or you need to replace the HEPA.

To change the snap on HEPA replacement filter you just jank a bit (or maybe use a knife for leverage) and pull off the entire top of the unit which is the HEPA. There are 4 or 5 little peg inserts that snap into the bottom of the Roomaid where the motor is. Then push the new unit on and put on the new prefilter. The post filter sits in the middle of the HEPA unit.

You could add a scent to the top of the HEPA unit. There is a little round container for scent. I choose not to since I am allergic to begin with.

For use in the car, there is a seat belt clip included with the optional 12volt power adapter.

In my opinion, there is not a sturdier unit available in this price range. And certainly maintenance is simple as well.

Thanks for your question.

Sincerely, Barbara
