Home3D Magnets of Bird, Fish,Balls, Flags, Animals, Etc. Appear to Fly Thru Windows

by Barbara 26. January 2012 11:06

Question about the Clark Collection 3 dimensional magnets.

Q: "How do these 3D bird magnets attach to window glass? What are they made from? Do the colors last in the weather? How much force does it take to remove them? How large are they? My mom is a bird lover and an invalid. I know she'd love to have birds on her windows. Thanks. Sara."

Answer: For bird and animal lovers, there are a wide assortment of the 3 dimensional fly-thru type magnet objects. It requires very little force to remove the magnets from the window. In fact, some bird lovers, mount a piece of glass in a frame or use a piece of tempered glass in a stand and mount the birds on the glass as a conversation piece. Each bird or animal or US flag is made from a poly-resin and hand-painted with a durable paint. The amount of fading would depend upon how much sun exposure over time that each would have. Most are quite small, perhaps 3 inches thick including both halves and at the most about 5 inches long.

As you know the units are in two pieces with a magnet on each side. Each magnet has a thin piece of felt on it to protect your window or storm door. Do not buy for use on thermal windows, i.e. double pane with a vacuum inside as the magnets will not stick. If you have storm windows and remove them in the summer or spring, then attach the fly through magnet birds, animals, etc. then. The distance between most storm doors and the main doors allows attachment.

Remember you must attach both sides at the same time i.e. opposites attract.  You may need two people depending upon the window or door height.

Safe Home currently sells a wide selection of The Clark Collection Fly In or Fly Thru Magnets. Visit our website and search for 3D magnet or Clark Collection.

Thank you for your question.

Sincerely, Barbara

Koolatron 12V Battery Saver Turns Off Coolers, Inverters, Etc. So Vehicle Starts

by Barbara 26. January 2012 08:01

Question about using the Koolatron Kargo Kooler 12V Thermoelectric Cooler 33 Qt while my car is parked.

Q: "I am concerned about leaving the Koolatron cooler plugged in while I go into the store to shop. I want the cooler to be pre-cooled. We live in Arizona. What can I do to make sure my battery does not get too low to start the car? Thanks. Susan."

Answer: We suggest that you add a Koolatron 12V Battery Saver for Vehicles, F70110.

When plugged into your car or truck 12 volt outlet cigarette lighter accessory plug, the Koolatron 12V Battery Saver F70110 senses when your vehicle voltage drops below 11 volts. The battery saver then shuts off the current to all accessories plugged in, preventing further drainage. It reconnects automatically when you start your vehicle. You'll never have to worry about your car starting again with the 12 V Battery Saver. Use with all Koolatron coolers so your car will start if you forget to disconnect the 12V plug.

  • Works with any vehicle with a cigarette lighter
  • Senses when vehicle voltage drops below 11 volts
  • Reconnects automatically
  • Model F70110
  • 1 Year warranty by Koolatron

Thanks for your question.

Disposable 4 Inch Furnace Filters MERV 8 with Carbon/Potassium Permanganate to Remove Odors, Dirt and Chemicals

by Barbara 21. January 2012 17:10

Question about the difference between a 4 inch Trion Air Bear Filter Pleated Furnace Filter and the Safe Home Duo Air Purify Furnace Filter 16x25x4 Inch.

Q; "How does the Safe Home Duo4 differ from the pleated 4 inch Trion Air Bear brand filter I currently use in my HVAC system? We are an allergic family but do not want the expensive, high maintenance HVAC systems with HEPA filters or electronic air cleaners. We were looking at the Envirosept Electronic Furnace Panel but those electronic furnace panels come only for one inch furnace slots. Thanks. Tim."

Answer:  Websites that sell the Trion Air Bear Filters note the high efficiency of filtration of the Trion Air Bear whole-house media air cleaners because of synthetic filter media and extended surface pleats that let the air pass straight through the pleats. The consensus is that using highly efficient air filters can increase HVAC equipment life (the motor, etc. remain cleaner) and save money.

Trio Air Bear and Safe Home Duo4 Filter Similarities:

  • Synthetic filter media
  • Extended surface pleats
  • Omni-directional air flow
  • MERV 7 to 8 rating: Note, using a high MERV rated filter on an older furnace with a smaller furnace motor is not advised.
  • Fit tightly in filter slot: air must go through filter

Trion Air Bear and Safe Home Duo4 Filter Differences:

  • Air Bear has metal wires
  • Safe Home™ Duo4 has Formaldesorb™ impregnated into the media filter so odors, dust, pollen and chemicals are stay in the filter as air flows through it.

So why choose the Safe Home Duo4 Filter over the Trion Air Bear? The major reason is the Formaldesorb™ addition to the media material. Formaldesorb™ combines activated carbon and potassium permanganate. Chemicals like activated carbon and potassium permanganate make the filter media more efficient as they absorb smoke and chemicals as well as neutralize odors. So the air in your home or office is cleaner and smells fresher.  The only other air purifier units that use this combination are the Miracle Air PM-400 Commercial Grade UV Purifier. The MiracleAir HEPA Filtration System is portable and has an activated carbon pre-filter, 82 sq. feet of hospital grade HEPA plus a 15 pound carbon/potassium permanganate filter cartridge that has 12 lbs of activated carbon and 3 pounds of alumina potassium permanganate. So using the Safe Home™ Duo4 gives you a similar combination of carbon and potassium permanganate to reduces odors and volatile organic chemicals in a furnace filter.

Safe Home Duo4 Filter Specifications:

  • Thickness: 4 inches, also fits 5 inch filter slots
  • Captures up to 95% of common household allergens
  • Eliminates odors from pets, paint, cooking, and more
  • Uses high density carbon and advanced compounds plus synthetic filter media
  • Highly effective and affordable: Uses the same materials that protect critical environments in most hospitals
  • MERV 7 polyester white ASHRAE rated allergen filter plus an industrial chemical and odor filter,
  • Replacement intervals: every 3 to 6 months depending upon air quality of building.
  • Fits tighly in slot due to foam around entire outside of filter.
  • 300 grams per square foot of a 50/50 activated carbon and FormaldaSorb™ blend
  • Made in USA
  • Note: This furnace filter is not a control device for radon, carbon monoxide or carbon dioxide.
  • Limited Warranty: Free of manufacturing and material defects . If product is found defective within 30 days of purchase, it will be replaced at no additional charge.
  • Product is not packaged for sale outside of the United States

Many furnace filters remove dust and dirt, only one aspect of indoor air pollution. Levels of gases from cleaning products, formeldehyde out-gassing from laminated wood, VOC's i.e volatile organic compounds etc. are higher than in the past because of increased sealing and insulation of homes and businesses. For those with allergies and chronic medical problems, indoor air pollution is uncomfortable if not dangerous. The EPA ranks indoor air as often a greater risk than outdoor pollution and water contamination. Allergy and asthma symptoms, as well as long term health problems, are often caused or triggered by these common gases. In many areas, polluted indoor air is a greater health threat than outdoor air or contaminated water.

Thank you for your question. If your allergy symptoms require more, you may want to add a supplemental air purifier system. Consider the Airpura P600-W HEPA,VOC, UV HVAC Whole House Air Purifier which filters air even when the furnace blower is off. This unit pulls air from your return air ducts and passes it through HEPA filtration and a VOC filter while the UV light works to kill bacteria and viruses.

Sincerely, Barbara

Reasons to Install Sensaphone Remote Monitors Instead of Typical Security Systems

by Barbara 6. January 2012 07:13

Question about advantages of Sensaphone Remote Monitoring Systems over security systems by national or local alarm and security companies.

Q: "We are building a new data center. Our choices are between a national or local alarm and security company with monthly monitoring fees or a Sensaphone system. We want to monitor power, temperature and humidity. We are also concerned about possible water leaks onto the flooring and being able to lower the thermostat in the room if one of the units begins to overheat. Which system do you recommend? Thanks. Bill."

Answer: For a data center, we would recommend the Sensaphone IMS-1000 Internet Remote Monitor, IMS-1002 or Sensaphone IMS-4000 PowerGate2 Outlet Switcher IMS-4302IMS-4000 unit over the Sensaphone Web600 Web-Monitor Alarm, No Land Line Needed. The WEB600 is a great starter solution with accessories like a battery back up, a temperature probe, a zone water detector and a humidity transmitter.  However, when you are talking a larger computer room or data center, you are talking about tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars of equipment that keep your business operational 24/7.

Sensaphone Systems offer these advantages:

  • No Monthly Monitoring Fees: you buy the product and programs it to notify directly any employee or employees you choose without the cost of a central service that runs at least several hundred dollars annually.
  • Real Sensor Values: Universal inputs read actual temperature values and more.
  • Battery Backup: Either included or an inexpensive option.
  • Maximum Flexibility: Notifications using custom voice phone calls, emails, faxes, text messages, SNMP traps, etc. Communication is via land phone lines, cell phones, Ethernet or satellite.
  • Remote Access: You can program remotely whether a phone line product, a web-based products or a satellite product.
  • No Dependencies: stand alone solutions mean you get direct communication without a central service, computer or server in the middle.
  • Field Proven in Sensitive Applications: Proven reliability and validity in emergency response materials, military weapons systems, medicines, Homeland security, etc.
  • Innovation: In-house engineering. Three US patents for unique technologies. Constantly working to make products more powerful and easier to use.
  • Easy to Use: Simple, clear set up and maintenance. You don't have to be an electronics genius! Some products like the IMS series even automatically detect the sensor you've connected and configure it for you. The owners manuals are extensive and clear to follow. Telephone technical support is there, unlimited and toll free.
  • Made in the USA:  Yes! Sensaphone is made in Pennsylvania. All engineering design, manufacturing, servicing, testing and support are here in the USA.

For your data center, Safe Home recommends you choose the IMS-1002 model and then choose from the 9 sensors listed:

If a sensor is disconnected, you will get an alert. Each sensor is continuously monitored by the IMS parent unit. Cat-5 jacks and cables make it easier to connect to remote sensors using existing structured cabling.

The data logging includes a time stamped collection of input values that can be viewed and graphed. Plus you will get a detailed event history of user logins, telephone calles, etc. It is possible to add video integration to have an image sent of the condition that tripped the alarm. This is web-based monitoring with a traditional phone line, too.

You can place the IMS-1000 or IMS-4000 into your server rack. There are no moving parts in the IMS-1000 series units: each is complately standalone with its own internal battery back up.

Please contact us if you have additional questions. Thank you for your questions.

Sliding Door Lock and Sliding Window Lock for Security and Child Safety

by Barbara 2. January 2012 10:42

Question about how to install a sliding door lock on my interior closet doors, my exterior slider windows and my patio sliding door.

Q: "I do not want to install window guards on my windows but I do want to get some ventilation during the winter months here in Florida. We are on the Atlantic side and the breezes are great right now (January). I am concerned about security on the patio door. and downstairs windows. For the upstairs windows, I am concerned more about child safety when grandkids visit. What do you suggest? Thanks. Julie."

Answer: The Cardinal Gates Patio Door Lock comes only in white. the Patio Door Guardian allows you to lock the door with a 3" gap for ventilation. Use on right and left handed sliding doors. Recognized as "one of the best new child safety products" by the National Safe Kids Campaign in Washington, D.C., the Patio Door Guardian works double duty as both a security device and as a childproofing lock.  This unit has a 2 position spring loaded lock with a left and right stop. The keeper plates allows for a 3 inch ventilation gap without minimizing security. This fits most sliding doors and most windows that are vinyl, aluminum or wood. The questions and answers below should help you make your decision.

Questions and Answers:

  •  Will the Patio Door Guardian work on all Patio Doors? This lock is designed to work on all inside sliding Patio Doors.
  •  Will the Patio Door Guardian secure my Patio Door from intruders? This lock is designed to keep your patio door closed and though it does have security benefits it does not lock with a key. It will deter intruders as significant force would have to be used to penetrate the door.
  •  When I mount the Patio Door Guardian to my patio door, how do I determine where to put the screws? You must mount the screws away from the edge of the glass on the sliding door, so you do not break the glass. Do not rely only on the location of mounting plate holes provided with your Patio Door Guardian instructions. Hold the lock up to the desired height and mark your mounting holes away from the glass edge of the door.

I would look at other options for sliding closet doors unless your doors are solid and white.

Thank you for your question.

Sincerely, Barbara

Question about Snuggle Wool Car Seat Covers for Babies.

Q: "I see that you have a new Snugglewool baby car seat cover. How does the Snuggle Wool Infant Car Seat Cover SW-410 differ from the seat cover I bought two years ago for my friend? I am expecting, live in Arizona and am concerned about my baby's car seat heating up too much when we are out of the car shopping. Thanks. Sue."

Answer: Snugglewool redesigned the car seat cover to make it more adaptable to both infant carriers and to baby car seats. The Snugglewool  baby wool car seat cover SW-410 is made from soft edge-stitched Merino wool fleece with a neutral cotton trim. Included are cut-outs for seat belts and/or harness. This Snuggle Wool cover for infant car seats fits most infant carriers and convertible car seats with four and five point harness configurations. Keep baby comfortable in hot or cold weather: lambswool absorbs perspiration in hot weather and keeps baby warmer in cold weather. Note: Does NOT work well on car seats with head wings.

Snugglewool Infant Baby Car Seat SW-410 Specifications:

37" from top to bottom (wool edge to wool edge, excluding cotton/elastic trim)
24" horizontally at its widest point.
Not for use in car seats with head wings
Note: The lambswool is cut to a one inch length.
The Merino lambwool is sliver-knit to a polyester backing and processed to withstand gentle machine washing. We recommend line drying. Fluff seat cover, if desired, on no heat setting in the dryer. Wash by itself for best results.

The earlier model, the Snuggle Wool Car Seat Cover- Universal Size SW-400 was not as versatile. The top part is 24" wide, 19" wide at the bottom, and is 35" in total length. The new one is made for the newer varieties of car seats for infants and babies.

I hope this answers your questions. Thank you.

AirPura Portable Air Purifiers Have Steel Housing, Felt Pressure Seals and True HEPA

by Barbara 23. December 2011 06:35

Question about the Airpura H600 Allergy Asthma Air Purifier,Cream

Q:"What makes this portable air purfier superior to Honeywell, Holmes, etc. I am allergic and want the best air filtration unit I can find. Thanks. Sara."

Answer: AirPura is Made in Canada, not in China or outside North America. The construction and warranty as we describe below should help with your choice.

Air Pura Technology Below  Makes Airpura Your Best Choice:

  • Vacuumable Pre-filter 570 sq in x 1" deep: Vacuum through the mesh and replace every 12 months
  • 2 Micro-Suppress filters: Suppress bacteria and viruses around the carbon bed
  • Carbon filter: Absorbs airborne chemicals, noxious gases and odors
  • True HEPA filter: 40 Sq Ft. Traps 99.97% of particles as small as 0.3 microns.HEPA is warm rolled to prevent cracking. 10 pleats per sq inch maximizes filtration (other systems only
use 6-8 folds). Spacers to make sure every fold filters.
  • Unimpeded airflow: air flows directly from the filters to the exterior for lower air turbulance and less noise
  • Motor and electric parts out of the airflow:Other systems blow clean air over the motor and recontaminate it
  • One piece motor / fan assembly: Eliminates vibration problems where separate fan is attached to a shaft with a set screw.
  • Compact motor / fan design allows more space for filtration
  • Felt Gaskets: Seal the filter chamber so there is no off gassing from rubber seals.

  • Attractive modern appearance: choose color to match your decor

130 Decibel Free-Standing 9 Volt Battery Water Screamer Alarm for Hard or Soft Surfaces

by Barbara 21. December 2011 09:15

Question about the Gizmode Water Screamer Water Alarm

Question: "I need several very loud water alarms. I live in an older house whose plumbing is being updated slowly. We had a leak under the kitchen sink that was so bad we had to remove the bottom of the cabinet and rebuild it. The flooring warped as well. Is this the right alarm for us? Thanks. Tom."

Answer: Yes, I would choose this alarm if you want a portable extremely loud water alarm. The Water Screamer has a tip resistant commercial grade design and is made from ABS plastic. The 4.5 inch diameter by 2.5 inch tall size means it takes up little room. Just put in on the floor or bottom of a cupboard. There are 4 stainless steel sensor pins that reach into carpeting. The 9 volt battery is not included: the battery can last for years because there is no power drawn from it unless there is a leak. There is a one year warranty on the water alarm itself.

Buy the economy pack if you want to protect 6 different areas. The Water Screamer 9Volt Water Alarm, 130 dB Alarm,6/PK is an economical choice compared to purchasing automatic shut off devices for all the water using appliances in your home.

Thank you for your question. Please contact us if you want information about individual water shut off devices with alarms such as the Flood Stop or a whole house unit such as the Water Cop. We can assist you with finding the best choices for your home.

Sincerely,

Barbara

All Furnace Air Goes Thru Safe Home Brand Disposable Furnace Filter With Self-Sealing Frame

by Barbara 14. December 2011 09:02

Question about why the Safe Home Duo 16 x 25 x 1 furnace filter is a better furnace filter than a washable metal one or a fiberglass disposable one.

Q: "Please explain why this furnace filter is superior to a washable metal furnace filter or a disposable fiberglass disposable furnace filter. Thanks. Sam

Answer: Differences are several:

  • All air must pass through the Safe Home Duo furnace filter because the frame is internal. The twin media covering the frame are self-sealing. To install, push the Safe Home filter into the one inch slot. The soft filter media seals against all 4 edges.
  • Each Safe Home Duo filter has two types of media: one layer is for dust, dirt and pollen; the second layer also contains an odor and formaldehyde absorbing layer.  Judged to be 95% effective at filtering out dust, dirt, allergens, etc.
  • Compare 95% effectivness of the Duo with either an all metal filter or one made of fiberglass. Fiberglass tend to clog quickly with large dirt particles, restricting air flow while letting small particles go through. These smaller particles can include mold and bacteria. Fiberglass are often rated at 2% effective while non-electrostatic are rated at 4% effective or less.
  • Neither the metal washable filter nor the disposable fiberglass filter contains activated carbon and potassium permanganate, the filter media for odors and chemicals such as formaldehyde and paint fumes.
  • The Safe Home Duo is a MERV 8 rated filter made in the USA: inexpensive metal and fiberglass filters are often MERV 2 or 3.
  • No mess. No time spent washing filters. Just put the dirty Duo filter into the garbage and replace with a clean one every 3 to 4 months or more often if yours is an exceptionally dirty environment.

Thank you for your question. We sell the Safe Home Duo in many sizes. We also sell the Safe Home Duo Air Purify Furnace Filter 20x20x4 In. and other sizes in the 4 inch furnace filters. These thicker furnace filters also have self-sealing edges around a 4 inch furnace filter core to filter out allergens with the Formaldesorb carbon and potassium permanganate.

Thank you for your question.
