Get Rid of Deer Pests with Havahart Electronic Deer Repeller and Night Guard Red Light

by Barbara 29. July 2013 04:19

Question about how to get rid of deer day and night.

Question:"I have deer roaming through my yard, munching on my trees. This happens during the day and at night. Using deer repellent sprays and granules takes a lot of work. I don't want to install an electric fence as it is unsightly. What do you suggest? Thanks. John

Answer: I have two suggestions. One is the Havahart Electronic Deer Repellent and the other is the Nite-Guard. If you combine the two units, you should reduce deer damage significantly.

The Havahart® electronic repellent for deer uses a behavioral modification technique. The Havahart 5250 attracts deer short range by using an acorn scented deer lure. When a deer touches the post, he or she gets a gentle static shock. So you train the deer to stay out of your yard. This electronic deer repellent includes 3 units, aromatic lure, instructions, cotton balls, and order form for additional lure.

Electronic Repellent for Deer from Havahart®

  • 3 green and silver posts with red tops: Place 5 to 20 feet apart.
  • Aromatic lure, instructions, cotton balls, and order form for additional lure.
  • Delivers 400 volts (substantially less voltage than static shock) with virtually no amps (.01 Joules) to harmlessly repel deer
  • Covers approximately 1,200 sq. ft
  • Requires 6 AA batteries (not included).
  • Average battery life is over one year
  • Easy to assemble and install
  • Portable and effective

Add the Nite-Guard for additional deer repelling at night. Also discourages pest animals like coyote, fox, bear, mountain lion, wolf, bobcat, owls, raccopns, human intruders, hawks, mink, weasel, A great product to help protect your campsite from animal pests.

Nite Guard Solar is a solar-powered flashing red light for night animal control. When positioned correctly, this automatic red flashing light repels night pest animals that could harm  livestock or gardens. Nite Guard SolarTM is based on scientific research: night animals flee as they fear they have been discovered or are being watched. Completely weatherproof. Functions to -20 degrees F. Operates in a single direction: 30 degrees angle of sight to right or left. Add additional units to protect large areas. Requires minimum of 4 hours of direct sunlight to flash: turns on at dusk, turns off at daylight.

Nite-Guard Main Features:

  • Automatic red light flashing begins at dusk and lasts until dawn.
  • Completely weatherproof: can work submerged in water.
  • Tab for hanging on nail or screw
  • Requires minimum of 4 hours direct sunlight to maintain internal battery charge. Full charge may require several days of sunlight. Not for use in forests!
  • Functional to -20 degrees F.
  • Coverage: approximately 60 degrees, 30 to each side of the Nite-Guard.
  • For best coverage, use 4 or more units. Consider height of animals against which you want to protect your property when mounting unts.
  • Warranty: 1 year from manufacturer. Typical life span: about 2-3 years minimum.

Thanks for your question. Please take some action and save your yard, trees and garden.

Sincerely,

Barbara

How Do Bird-X Yard Gard, Deer Gard and Balcony Gard Animal and Bird Pest Repellers Differ

by Barbara 10. July 2012 10:04

Question about the differences among the Bird-X Products besides the colors.

Q: "What differences are there among the Yard Gard, Deer Gard and Balcony Gard products? All three look the same to me except for the colors. I want to get rid of pest birds. Thanks. Tim."

Answer: The YardGard Electronic Animal Repeller and BirdX DEERGARD Electronic Deer Repeller have identical controls on the back. All three will get rid of pest birds. Only the color differs. The green is less obvious when nestled among green plants. The brown is barely noticeable when mounted on trees. Remember if you use these products to keep animals away from bird feeders that you must distance them from the feeders. Many people use them as a perimeter boundary, i.e. they mount  them on the trees facing away from their yards at a distance from feeders. If you place the units near bird feeders, you will scare awy the birds, too!

The Balcony Gard is a light beige color, less obvious for mounting on balconies of apartments, condos, etc. This is used primarily to get rid of birds from balconies, decks, etc. You can also change the settings to keep small animals away.

All three units can be set to repel birds, small animals and deer.  All three units can be run continuously off AC power or can be set on motion sensor only to run from C batteries, not included.

The Yard Gard Manual and the Deer Gard manual are identical.

Caution: these units should not be placed so that the sounds are directed at people. The best results for all the units is to use them with other types of pest repellent products. For example, add holographic ribbon or a Terror Eyes balloon to your Balcony Gard for better bird repeller results.

Thank you for your question.

Solar Powered Nite-Guard Flashes Red Lights to Keep Night Predators Away

by Barbara 23. May 2010 16:38

Question about the Nite-Guard Animal Control Light.

Q:"How does the Nite-Guard work? How many do I need to protect my yard from raccoons? Do I need to mount them differently for deer?" Thanks. George

Answer: The Nite-Guard Solar is a new addition to animal control products. Solar powered, each Nite-Guard light flashes a red light on and off from dusk to dawn. Scientific research shows that night animals flee when they see the red flashing light as they fear they have been discovered or are being watched. This completely weatherproof animal pest repeller works best if used in multiples of at least 4 units. Otherwise the animal most likely will enter your yard or property from a direction away from the flashing red.  Each light mounts to flash in only one direction with an approximate 30 degree angle of sight as one moves right or left away from it. This is why multiple units are needed and spacing between lights is needed as well.

If mounted high, the light can be seen for a long distance, depending on the lay of the land. A flat, open area with four Nite Guards placed at 10’ for owls will protect an area 1/2 mile in each direction. Even at 3 feet off the ground a range of several hundred yards' protection is common. A night predator stops the instant he sees the flash. So mount lights according to what you want to keep away. Deer will respond to higher lights than bobcats, raccoons, etc.

For small predators, these are the manufacturer's installation instructions:

For predators like raccoon, opossum and skunk; put lights approximately 25 feet apart, around your entire perimeter (all four sides of the area) and place them eye level to the predators approximately 10-12 inches off the ground. If the area has sides longer than 50 feet, more lights should be used on each side. Face lights outward from protected area.

For deer, these are the installation instructions:

1. Four Nite Guard lights placed on a single stake 4 feet high, each light facing a different direction. Moving the Nite Guard lights and stake every 7 to 10 days is absolutely critical as it breaks the pattern that deer may get used to. You do not have to move them far, 20 or 30 feet is fine, more is better. If you do not move the post with the lights around the deer will begin to “pattern” them in the exact position night after night, thusly losing fear of the flash.

NOTE: Deer are perhaps the most destructive nocturnal animal in modern times, they are also the most intelligent. Deer are very hard to deter from an area and, with the exception of the Nite Guard, will ignore most attempts to stop them from getting at the food that they want. The also act differently than a predator type animal and so we need to approach the placement of the lights differently.

2. You could also use a perimeter type placement against deer, placing lights 100 feet apart and approx. 4 feet high. Again, you will need to move the lights around every 3-10 days to break the pattern. Suggestion: Use the Nite Guard in conjunction with some of the other “weapons” they may already have in their “arsenal” against deer. Most people with deer problems are very well away of the deer’s intelligence and know that they get used to things easily. Use the Nite Guard lights along with some type of “repellant spray”. The deer then will not only “see” the predator (the flash of the light), but they will also “smell” the predator. This can be a very powerful deterrent for those deer that seem impossible to repel. You will be able to outsmart deer and protect your gardens and crops with the Nite Guards!

Some suggestions about deer deterent sprays or granules are: Deer Scram , a granular repellent; Deer Away spray for deer and squirrels by Havahart and Deer Off Deer and Rabbit Spray by Havahart. All three use natural scent repellents.

This is a solar powered unit that is completely weatherproof. Daylight as well as direct sunlight can power the battery. Best results are when the solar panel is mounted to capture the most light.

Thank you for your questions.

Sincerely,

Barbara

Recommended Devices to Scare Away Dogs and Cats

by Barbara 30. July 2008 08:04

Question: "For scaring away dogs and cats, what stationary device is the most effective? Thanks!"

Answer: The answer is dependent upon whether you want to keep the cat or dog off a particular place like a table or a car or whether your purpose is to keep the animal out of your yard.

Ultrasonic Area Repel Devices for Cats Only:

  • The CatStop by Contech. An ultrasonic cat repeller that is motion activated and uses a high decibel alarm that startles the cats to leave while not disturbing the peace. This unit operates for about nine months on one standard 9 volt battery. (Battery life estimate is based upon 4900 activations over 245 days at an average of 20 per day.) The CatStop protects about 330 square feet (20 feet or 6m in front of the unit in an 80 degree arc). There are no controls or adjustments. Install the battery. Position it in your yard. Turn it on. The ultrasonic alarm is from 21-25 kHz, levels rarely heard by animals other than cats.

Ultrasonic Area Repel Devices for Dogs and Cats:

  • The Koolatron Dog and Cat Repeller with AC Adapter and the Lentek Koolatron Dog and Cat Repeller, Battery Only. These are identical except for the AC adapter. use PIR (passive infra red) motion sensors, are powered by two 9V batteries (not included) and battery life is approximately 2000 sound releases. Mount no greater than 3 feet as close as possible to the area to be protected. 85 feet range at a 70 degree arc. Waterproof to IPX4 standard. Advanced ultrasonic sirens: Ultrasonic sound: 80 to 115dB; Frequency sweep: 18 kHz to 24 kHz.
  • The Bird-X Yardgard Outdoor Animal Repeller is the most powerful unit (and most expensive) motion sensor activated unit that we sell. The coverage: 4,000 sq. ft. (278.7 sq. meters) , Frequency range: 15,000 - 25,000 Hz (adjustable) Sound pressure: 90 dB at 3 feet . Electricity costs: Less than $0.25 per month or uses 4 "C" cells (not included). Working current: <200>
  • The Animal Away Pro. Power supply: 9V (Two 9V akaline batteries, not included)Power: Standby current: 0.16mA . Warm up time: 30 seconds. Frequency range: 18,000 Hz to 24,000 Hz. Protection coverage: Fan shaped area of 70 degrees, distance up to 40 feet. Material of plastic housing: ABS plastic. Again motion sensor activated.

Protect a tabletop or car in a garage from dogs or cats:

  • Scat Mats. These are clear plastic static mats that come in large and medium sizes and strips run on either 9 volt batteries or an AC adapter. To extend coverage, you can buy extension mats. The animal/animals don't like the harmless static electricity generated and stay off.
  • The Contech Mini Scarecrow is motion sensor activated and uses a warning sound followed by a puff of compressed air to scare an animal off a surface. Once your pet responds to the warning sound, switch to "sound only" mode and conserve compressed air. The motion sensor and spray are separately adjustable to allow precise positioning. Keeps dogs and cats from scratching furniture and drapes, jumping on counters, window sills, tables; entering a room, etc.

Please take a few minutes to examine the details on one or more units before you make your choice. We also sell a standard Animal Away unit that is less expensive and less powerful. The advantage of this unit is you can use it inside or buy several units to surround an area.

Hope this helps. We thank you for your question.

Sincerely, Barbara

Getting Squirrels Out of Attics & Eaves

by Barbara 22. June 2008 07:07

Question about the product Evictor Strobe Light Squirrel and Rat Repeller Product Code: EP-MB10K

Q: "Squirrels have eaten into our eaves, but have not gotten into the house (yet) Will this or a similiar product work in that type of area? We are not exactly sure where they are, but have seen them go in and out."-Debbie

Answer: The Squirrel Evictor Strobe Light is designed to be used indoors. It is a very large strobe light and will most likely cause the neighbors to complain. You could install one indoors in the attic area in case they do get in. NOTE: Currently distribution of the Evictor products to Safe Home ceased due to a law suit between the original partners. (2013). Replacement stobe lights are available through Safe Home for both sizes of Evictor strobe fixtures.

You may want to try Bird Proof Gel or Bird Proof Liquid . You can apply the gel using a caulk gun or the liquid can be sprayed on. This is an EXTREMELY sticky substance and the squirrels HATE it. Once it gets on their fur they can't get it off. Another suggestion is the somewhat noisy Bird-X YardGard that operates on AC current or batteries. We would recommend continuously running the Yard Guard units for best results. For a large attic you will need several units. Make sure you add more insulation if yours in the attic is thin. Many power companies are currently (Jan 2014) offering rebates up to $1000 for adding additional attic insulation.

Thanks for your question. Good luck!

Sincerely, Barbara
