Sliding Door Lock and Sliding Window Lock for Security and Child Safety

by Barbara 2. January 2012 10:42

Question about how to install a sliding door lock on my interior closet doors, my exterior slider windows and my patio sliding door.

Q: "I do not want to install window guards on my windows but I do want to get some ventilation during the winter months here in Florida. We are on the Atlantic side and the breezes are great right now (January). I am concerned about security on the patio door. and downstairs windows. For the upstairs windows, I am concerned more about child safety when grandkids visit. What do you suggest? Thanks. Julie."

Answer: The Cardinal Gates Patio Door Lock comes only in white. the Patio Door Guardian allows you to lock the door with a 3" gap for ventilation. Use on right and left handed sliding doors. Recognized as "one of the best new child safety products" by the National Safe Kids Campaign in Washington, D.C., the Patio Door Guardian works double duty as both a security device and as a childproofing lock.  This unit has a 2 position spring loaded lock with a left and right stop. The keeper plates allows for a 3 inch ventilation gap without minimizing security. This fits most sliding doors and most windows that are vinyl, aluminum or wood. The questions and answers below should help you make your decision.

Questions and Answers:

  •  Will the Patio Door Guardian work on all Patio Doors? This lock is designed to work on all inside sliding Patio Doors.
  •  Will the Patio Door Guardian secure my Patio Door from intruders? This lock is designed to keep your patio door closed and though it does have security benefits it does not lock with a key. It will deter intruders as significant force would have to be used to penetrate the door.
  •  When I mount the Patio Door Guardian to my patio door, how do I determine where to put the screws? You must mount the screws away from the edge of the glass on the sliding door, so you do not break the glass. Do not rely only on the location of mounting plate holes provided with your Patio Door Guardian instructions. Hold the lock up to the desired height and mark your mounting holes away from the glass edge of the door.

I would look at other options for sliding closet doors unless your doors are solid and white.

Thank you for your question.

Sincerely, Barbara

Installing a Kids Edge Hearth Pad with Metal Backing to Protect Toddler Against Injury

by Barbara 20. October 2011 13:41

Question about the Kids Edge Hearth Pad Metal Frame BROWN, to 78 in.

Q: "I have a fireplace hearth that is made of irregular stones. It is straight across the front and has two returns each of which is about 20 inches. So it is a rectangle. The actual length is 90 inches. How does the metal attach to the hearth and what do I need to do to make it fit?  I have a toddler and am worried about her getting hurt.Thanks. Adam."

Answer: This is the correct hearth pad for an irregular stone hearth. First, the hearth must be at least 1.5 inches above the floor. Second, you will need to purchase an Kids Edge Metal Hearth Pad Extension, BROWN, 24 In. to add to the middle of your hearth pad for the proper length.

To install the hearth pad after unpacking:

  1. Remove tape on tightening rod (6). Remove filler pad (2) from inside cardboard insert and set aside for later use.
  2. There are two sections. The left side is completely covered with pad. The right side, partially covered with pad, slides under the left side for adjustment. You would add the extension to this part.
  3. Then extend sections of unit and place on hearth.
  4. Pull section together until snug on hearth.
  5. Without allowing sections to slide, remove unit and turn over to expose tightening rod.
  6. Insert rod hook into nearest hole and pull sections apart so there is enough tension to keep the hook in hole.
  7. Reposition unit on hearth. Insert Phillips screwdriver into hole at right corner
  8. Turn tightening bolt clockwise until tension is felt.
  9. Make sure the unit is in place by pushing down and back at corners.
  10. Tighten bolt further until unit is secure on hearth.
  11. NOTE: if unit is not secure and tightening bolt will not turn further, then loosen bolt, remove unit and move adjustment hook to next hole. Now reinstall unit.
  12. CAUTION: IT IS POSSIBLE TO TIGHTEN BOLT TOO MUCH CAUSING ENDS TO FLARE OUT CAUSING LOSS OF GRIP.

CUTTING FILLER PAD

  1. For appearance, this step is IMPORTANT. Measure the gap where frame is exposed. Add 3/8 inch to that measurement and mark the filler pad
  2. Place pad on edge of cardboard box, matching mark on pad with black alignment on box.
  3. Use only a sharp long-blade knife such as a fillet knife. DO NOT use a razor knife, utility knife, or other short-blade knife.
  4. Lubricate entire length of knife blade with liquid soap or soapy water.
  5. With light pressure, move knife back and forth, keeping the blade straight with alignment line.
  6.  After top half of pad is cut, turn pad over and repeat.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: The Cardinal Gates Metal-Backed Hearth Guard is designed to help prevent injuries. However, it is always possible for some injuries to occur even thought a protective device is used. We suggest adult supervision at all times. PAD IS “UL RECOGNIZED.”

INSTALLING FILLER PAD

  1. Peel off adhesive backing that bonds to front of frame only.
  2. Carefully press right end of filler pad against pad on right side of frame.
  3. Allow filler pad to rest on top of frame while pressing front of pad into place.
  4. Once the front of filler pad is bonded to frame, lift top corner of filler pad and peel off remainder of adhesive backing.
  5. Now press down on top of filler pad to bond to frame.
  6. Installation is now complete. To remove unit, simply loosen bolt to release tension.

Thank you for your question. Enjoy your little one: she will grow up way too fast!

Sincerely,

Barbara

by Barbara 27. May 2011 05:33

Question about the Window Wedge Adjustable Velcro Window Stop,144/CS window stop product for slider windows in military housing.

Q: "Our company supplies military installations around the world with safety products. We've been asked to quote on window stops for slider windows for military housing in Asia. Will the Window Wedge work for slider windows? We don't want to install window guards. Thanks. Valerie."

Answer: The Window Wedge fits on the window frame, not in the tracks. Make certain that the window frames are wide enough as Window Wedge® uses one 8 inch velcro strip to which you velcro the 4 inch wedge portion. This product is made in the USA. We asked you to have your customer measure the windows and they are 3/4 inch wide. We recommend that you have two wedges i.e. one package installed on each window. That is because a child pulling on a slider could possibly pull the unit out of the track.

Each window wedge loop strip is 8 inches long and 3/4 inches wide. The actual wedge section is 3.25 inches long.To open the window greater than four inches for cleaning, remove the wedge from the velcro loop portion of the window stopper.

Attach the second Window Wedge® unit to the bottom part of the
Adjust the position of the Window Wedge® so that the
window opening is 4 inches or less.

To Install Window Wedge Window Stoppers On a Double Hung or Single Hung Window:

    Close the window
Clean the surface of the window trim prior to application. Do not attach to glass itself.

Window Stops Fit Inside Window Frame or On Windows or Sliding Doors to Limit Opening

by Barbara 18. April 2011 10:44

Question about options to window guards.

Q: "We have a cottage. Our windows are single hung and sliders. We want to keep windows open for ventilation without the expense of window guards. What window stops do you suggest that don't require hiring a handyman? Thanks. Bethany."

Answer: Safe Home sells three different types of window stops. The Window Guardian Super Stopper, The Window Wedge and the Window Guardian Lock. The best choices still are window guards. The John Sterling Window Guards can be locked with a removable lock and swing open for cleaning windows. These are not expensive but would require a handy man type person if you cannot do the installation itself. The Guardian Angel window guards are much easier to install. They are not lockable but do remove completely from the window mounts.

Window Guardian Super Stopper The fastest and easiest to install is the Window Guardian or Super Stopper window stop. This home safety device combines a 2.75 inch flexible suction cup with a unique shaped wedge (1.25 inch x 2 inch). Clean the window. Open the window 4 inches or less. Suction cup on the stops on either side of the single hung window lock mechanism or along the sides of the sliders (as high as you can). These are also great to limit sliding door openings if you have children you want to keep inside the house.

Window Wedge: The next easiest to install is the Window Wedge®. The Window Wedge® uses two 8 inch velcro strips that are 3/4 inches wide. The wedge portion is removable so you can open the window opening wider for cleaning. The that fit on the window frame itself. Made in USA.

To Install Window Wedge Window Stoppers On a Double Hung or Single Hung Window:

    Close the window
Clean the surface of the window trim prior to application. Do not attach to glass itself.
Peel off the backing from the 8 inch loop strip and place in the center of the upper window frame for a double hung or single hung window.
Attach the Window Wedge® to the loop strip.
Attach the second window wedge on the other side at the same height.
Open the window until it is stopped by the window wedge.
Note: For maximum child safety, maximum window opening should not exceed 4 inches.

To Install Window Wedge Window Stoppers On a Slider Window:

Close window. Clean window frame surface before application of loop strip.
Peel off backing of 8 inch loop strip and place in center of upper horizontal window frame (not on the glass)
Attach the Window Wedge® to the loop strip with the
two tines facing the adjacent window section.
Slide window open until contact is made with the Window Wedge®
Attach the second Window Wedge® unit to the bottom part of the
Adjust the position of the Window Wedge® so that the
window opening is 4 inches or less.
Note: For maximum child safety, maximum window opening should not exceed 4 inches.

Window Guardian Window Lock. The push-button key lock design is a patented feature. Remove the key to keep the window locked. Easy to use, this security lock provides peace of mind and installs easily in minutes. The Window Guardian has a tamper-resistant cover and fits most windows. Requires a screwdriver for installation. White.

Before installation, remove the pull-key and cover.

1. Push the button while pulling the pull-key until it comes free. To remove cover, push down and slide it along the base towards the pull-key end.

2. Place the base on the spacer and line up the screw holes. Using the three #6 at head wood screws attach the base to the window or sill so that the end of the base is close to the edge of the sill or window.

3. Place the pin body onto the base so that the location tab ts into one of the three position slots. Select the position slot that gives the closest t to the keeper without causing interference.

4. Slide the cover along the base from the pull key end until it snaps into place. If it seems to bind, turn the cover around to position the locking bump at the correct end.

5. Place the pull key into the back of the assembled body and rotate gently until it finds the correct alignment and push the button, locking it in place.

6. Locate the keeper and install with the two #6 pan head screws. Clip the cover over the keeper to hide the screws. (Fig 3) An alternate orientation of keeper for vertical mounting is supplied. Use the second keeper as a holder for the pull-key when not engaged in the lock.

7.For aluminum windows, fit the lock to the aluminum adapter with 3 #6 machine screws. Fit the aluminum adapter to the handle or the flange at the end of the window. Secure the adapter with 2 Allen screws with Allen key provided. Use the appropriate keeper or drill a hole in the sill when required.

How to Use the Window Guardian: To unlock, pull the Pull-key and rotate 90 degrees/ the key button does not have to be pressed. The Pull-key can be left in. To remove the Pull-key, press the Pull-key button and pull until the key pops out. A second keeper is supplied as a location to store the Pull-key when not engaged in the lock. To insert the Pull-key into the key hole, rotate the key gently until it slides into alignment with the key hole. Once aligned, press the key button and push the key further into the key hole until you hear a click. Additional holes or keepers can be used to create locking positions that allow for partially open windows. Made in China.

Note: None of these products are substitutes for adult supervision. Never leave a child unattended with an open window. Thanks for your question.

Remove Guardian Angel Window Guards from Mounts to Wash Your Windows

by Barbara 20. March 2011 14:07

Question about how you wash your window glass when you have Guardian Angel Window Guards installed

Q: "I need to install window guards because the single hung windows in my new house are only 18 inches above the floor. The windows vary in size but most are 36 inches wide. I also have sliding windows in several rooms. I like sparkling clean windows. How difficult is it to remove the window guards? Are the Guardian Angel guards easy to install? Thanks. Beth."

Answer: Guardian Angel window guards are easy to install and easy to remove, for an adult or older child that is. These window guards are now standardized in the side mount heights as well. That means if you move and choose to remove the window guards to use in your new home, you can drill out the screws and re-install them. Unlike the John Sterling window guards, the Guardian Angel remove completely from the mounting bars.

For your single hung windows, mount a window guard or two or three for taller windows by mounting the lowest mount bar two inches above the sill. Then stack additional mounting bars as needed by butting the ends of the mounting bars together. Then telescope the window bars to lock into the mounting bars. Some people prefer to mount the window guards to cover the entire window. In this case use the longer, taller bars and mount vertically.

If you mount in sliders, the best way is like prison bars. Once more you decide the width opening you want and mount units side by side to fill that space. Yes, prison bars may not be attractive but they don't give your child a ladder to climb!

Each window guard has four locks, two on each side of two of the window bars. For example, there is  one lock on one side of bar 1 in a 3 bar unit and another lock on the other side. Bar 3 has an additional pair. You push in two locks at one time to release the bar. Push to the other side and release the second side. To reinstall, do the reverse. Make sure the bars lock into the side or top and bottom mounts.

Guardian Angel window guards are strong, powder coated white steel. They come in sizes that expand from 14 to 17 inches to those that expand from 73 to 120 inches. There are 3, 4 and 5 bar units that you can mix or match to meet your window protection needs.

Use a pair of Window Wedge window stops or a pair of Window Guardian Super Window Stops to keep the windows from opening more than 4 inches beyond the bars.

Thank you for your questions. Go to any window guard web page for access to our window guard guide.

Sincerely,

Barbara

Fridge Lock Helps Protect Against Spoiled Food and Child Suffocation

by Barbara 18. November 2010 07:14

Question about the Fridge Guard Appliance Child Lock, CLEAR, the Fridge Guard Appliance Child Lock, WHITE and the Double Door Fridge Guard, Child Safety Strap, Black

Q: "I have two problems. The first is that my young children have opened my refrigerator door several times in the past few weeks and pulled out food and drink, leaving a real mess on the floor. The second is that I have a freezer in the basement, a chest type, that I am not using. I am afraid the kids may use it for hide and seek. I have stuff piled on top now to discourage them. I don't feel it is safe, Do you have products that will help keep my kids safe? Thanks. Mary."

Answer: We sell three products. The first two are identical except one is clear and the other is white. These are the Fridge Guard appliance locks to keep kids out of refrigerators. The only other option to consider is a chain with combination lock that wraps around the entire unit. For the chest type freezer, I have no suggestions.

Here is the Fridge Guard information. This works on single door units. Parent Units' Fridge Guard Appliance Child Lock is a clear or white plastic refrigerator safety latch closure that uses high-bonding adhesive that will not mar refrigerator surface. This removable refrigerator lock or freezer door lock uses latch and hook to secure doors from young children. This child safety product is made in the USA. This sturdy child safety lock also protects against dumps, spills, or doors left ajar.

    * Easily Installed: Apply latch to side or top for double doors and freezers. Remove red liner from hook. Apply to door with hook facing forward. Install latch in desired location. Press firmly for 20 seconds. Allow adhesive to set overnight.
    * Easily Used: To open refrigerator, press inward on door handle and release flexible latch over hook. Latch resets automatically when door closes.
    * Easily Removed: Gently pry off hook and latch. Use olive oil to remove any adhesive residue.
    * Clear or White.
    * Note: Use as freezer door lock or refrigerator lock to keep younger children safter. For unused refrigerators or freezers, install latches to extend one inch beyond the hooks. Insert up to a 1-inch block of foam or plastic for ventilation through door opening. Refrigerators or freezers with ventilation are less likely to have mold or mildew problems.
    * Remember: No protective device takes the place of adult supervision.

Parent Units' Double Door Fridge Guard  is a black buckle style lock for double door refrigerators or on the refrigerator doors of trio style refrigerators. This child safety device is easily installed and easily removed by adults. If you have an unused double door refrigerator or one in the garage or basement where you store alcoholic beverages, use this safety device to make sure children stay out. The durable rubber strip combines with a patented buckle to securely lock fridge doors.  This stops your children safer from dangerous items or from leaving doors open causing food disasters.

Parent Units' Double Door Fridge Guard :

    * Simple to install
    * Easy buckle lock/unlock for adults to use
    * Keeps double door fridges off limits to little ones.
    * For use on standard kitchen and bathroom cabinets.
    * All childproofing works better when children are not present. We advise you install home and child safety devices when children are asleep for the night.
*Warning: Always rely on supervision as your best defense against accidents and injuries. Prevention is paramount. True this product is a highly reliable backup, but no product can be 100% fail safe. Proper Installation required. Use a licensed contractor for best performance.

Below are the product performancy warranties for both units:
Product Performance Warranty: This product must be used with supervision. Due to uncertainty of forces generated and numerous variables involved in a jarring event, no warranty can be properly applied to the performance of the product. Parent Units' only responsibility shall be to replace any product proven to be defective in material and workmanship prior to installation of the product. Neither seller nor manufacturer shall be liable for any injury, loss or damage, direct or consequential, arising out of the use or misuse, or the inability to use the product installation, whether by the user or third party, constitutes acceptance of these conditions by the user.

Thank you for your question. I only remember once that one of my sons opened the freezer door and actually turned off the freezer. I did a lot of cooking the next day and threw out a lot of once frozen products.

Sincerely,

Barbara

Door Guardian Door Lock for Child Safe Closets, Basements and Entry Doors

by Barbara 17. November 2010 11:37

Question about the Door Guardian door lock for use on basement doors and pantry doors.

Q: "We live in a house where the basement door is hinged to open into our kitchen. I am concerned about my curious toddler opening the door with the levered door "knob" and falling down the steep stairs and getting injured. Also there are items in our pantry like dog food that I don't want dumped out while my back is turned. Is this the right product for us? We don't want to install deadbolts in the doors because they are hollow core and the next owner may not see that as positive. Thanks. Sara."

Answer: Yes, the Door Guardian is a terrific child safety device to keep inward swinging doors closed to curious children. When my sons were young, we had a similar set-up and had to install a double turn dead bolt lock high on a hollow core door, a rather permanent installation.

Installation sometimes means mortising out the door frame as the unit has to be level when installed. The lock portion should not cause any harm to the door itself. Mount the Door Guardian high on the door frame so that only older children and adults can reach it. Otherwise, you could find yourself locked in the basement! This is a great addition to a pantry door and a lot less expensive that the combination door lock my son and his wife installed to keep the children from midnight raids that left the kitchen a mess.

Mount the Door Guardian unit at least six inches higher than the door knob or the deadbolt. Depending upon the door frame, you may have to mortise out an area so that the stationary part of the unit can be mounted straight, otherwise the lock part may not keep the door closed. Included are two long dry wall screws and three metal self-tapping screws if your door frame is metal.

Slide forward and flip closed to lock. Slide and turn to open the lock. This is installed on the side of the door with the door knob, on the side that swings inward.

Choose from:

Thank you for your question. Let us know if you have other child proofing concerns: we are happy to help you.

Sincerely,

Barbara

Advantages of Skin Urethane in Boing Safety Pad Corners, Edge Corner Cushion, Strips, Wall Pad, Etc.

by Barbara 16. November 2010 07:35

Question about the Boing Skin Urethane Foam Padding in Boing Fire Retardant Safety Wall Pad, 31x11.75 In, YELLOW, 4/BX, Boing Pole Pad or Post Pad 5 Inch Diameter - Yellow, Boing Edge Corner Strips-YELLOW, Case of 10 and Boing 3D Jumbo Corner Covers, YELLOW,4/PK.

Q; "I need to safety proof a warehouse. I've looked at various products. I'd like to know the advantages of using a skin urethane foam product rather than standard extruded foam which seems less expensive. Thanks. Thomas."

The main advantages are that this is a sturdy material and quite shock-absorbing and comes in products to meet almost every safety proofing need. Read on for more detail.

The Boing skin urethane products are safe for both commercial and residential uses, having passed or surpassed safety requirements including compression, toxicity, etc. Skin urethane has anti-bacterial properties and passes the ASTM G21 testing. There is no PVC, lead or phthalates in these products.  Although fire retardant, the Boing foam does not meet the current Class A fire codes for fire and smoke retardants. There are many different local, national and international fire codes, each with different property requirements so one product cannot meet all the possible codes.

Skin Urethane is long-lasting. Of course, there are instances where excessive use or aggressive use will reduce longevity. this was desifned as shock-absorbing safety padding to reduce injuries.
Size tolerance of skin urethane is within 5% in the size and density of the finished products. That is because skin urethane is molded, one piece at a time, and can be effected by temperature, humidity, season, weather, etc. Baking lasts about 30 to 40 minutes.

Boing safety pad products are usable indoors or outdoors. All safety padding products are UV treated but over time, like all plastics, there will be some fading. The stronger the sun, the faster the fading occurs. Darker colors fade faster. The impact absorbing qualities are reduced in very cold (below 32 F) and in very hot (over 100F) temperatures. The most UV resistant colors are the primary ones, red, blue, green and yellow. It is best if the product is not exposed to direct sunlight for extended periods.

Installation: We recommend GE-Silcone I, Silicone II or Silicone II (2X). Also 3M VHD (very high bond) tape is a great option
Aluminum re-inforced strips can be attached with screws (strips are pre-drilled & we provide the screws)

Amount of silicone needed: Varies withe the type of surface to be protected and the degree of adhesion. As a rough estimate, you can generally attach the following numbers with a single 300ml tube:

  • Wall Pad - 2 to 3 wall pads per tube
  • Edge Corner Strip - 6 to 8 edge corner pads per tube
  • Jumbo Corner Guard - 12 to 14 corners per tube
  • Post Pad - 1 to 2 post pads per tube. Remember this product fits only 5 inch diameter poles.

Cleaning and maintenance of safety padding: Use non-abrasive cleaners, normal household cleaning solutions. Permanent markers rarely can be removed.Use around water activities is fine. Do not cut or puncturer. Fasten to clean and dry surface. Chlorinated water will cause discoloration as will that with a high TDS rating.

Thanks for your question. Our most popular products for safety proofing are the yellow ones for obvious visual reasons!

Sincerely, Barbara

How to Install Cardinal Gates Deck Shield Netting on Outdoor Decks for Child Safety

by Barbara 22. September 2010 10:52

Question about Cardinal Gates 50 Ft. Deck Shield Netting

Q: "How difficult is installation of this deck netting? How long should I expect it to last? Our deck is shaded part of the day.Thanks. Joan.

Answer: Deck netting is easy to install. And it should last at minimum several years depending upon your location.

Installation of this outdoor safety netting is easier with two people although one person can do it. With two people, it is easier to stretch the netting and secure it. There are cable ties provided to attach the UV resistant mesh netting to the deck posts. Eye screws are also providd to attach the plastic netting to the deck surface. Some sun rot over time can be expected depending upon the amount of sun exposure. There is no material that is 100% rot resistant.

Features

  • Material: durable, weather-resistant plastic netting for child proofing.
  • UV protected: sun "rot" is reduced.
  • Size of openings: each "mesh" rectangle measures about 1.25" x .75".
  • Installation: quick and easy.
  • Cable ties (provided) to attach uv mesh netting to deck posts.
  • Eye screws (provided) to attach plastic netting to deck surface.
  • Barely visible from a distance.

Thanks for your question. Please contact us if you need more help or have additional questions.

Sincerely, Barbara
