Childproofing A Home Against the Biggest Home Risks to Children

by Barbara 8. July 2012 06:00

Question about the most common dangers to children in and around homes.

Q: "We have a 6 month old baby, our first. Where should we begin to childproof our home? What are the biggest risks to a toddler or younger child? Thanks. Sue."

Answer: According to the USA Today, July 5, 2012 report, the Consumer Protection Product Safety Commission lists drowning, poisoning and tipping furniture as most common dangers. You may recall the baby crib recall. The cribs our parents used for us and we used for our children and grandchildren can no longer be sold. Remember the double release locks you pushed with your foot and the side dropped?  The Commission received reports and does research to determine which products are safe.

Drowning, poisoning and tipping furniture are considered the most common risks to young children. Cordless window blinds are recommended to reduce risks of strangulation.

The COSC recommends that whatever safety devices you buy for do-it-yourself installation or have installed by handymen or professional childproofers meet voluntary industry standards or are recommended by the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association.

Common sense tells you that poisons, medications, dishwasher detergent, etc. must be stored in secure places whether that place is a cupboard or a closet.

Here are a few suggestions based upon our customers' purchases:

These are childproofing products that are easily installed and may save the life of your child or grandchild or a visiting child.

Thank you for your questions.

Sincerely,

Barbara

Cardinal Gates Silver Deck Shield Net with 1/2 Inch Mesh Openings for Child Safety

by Barbara 25. April 2012 06:12

Question about the advantages of the Cardinal Gates 50 Ft. Silver Deck Netting over the Cardinal Gates Black Deck Shield Netting

Q: "Why is the silver so much more expensive than the black? Why would installing it be better than the black? Thanks. Tom."

Answer: The silver deck shield netting has a longer life and is less visible on light colored decks or when used to block animals (or children) from pushing between the pickets of fences. Both are easily installed using the wire ties, etc. included with each deck net kit. Both are made from polypropylene plastic and UV protected.

The major differences between the silver and the black deck netting are as follows:

  • Thickness: Silver is substantially sturdier and thicker—more than 7 times thicker than black. Black is approximately 0.26mm thick. Silver is approximately 1.98mm thick.
  • Size of openings: Silver: each "mesh" rectangle measures ½-inch hole size .  Black: each "mesh" rectangle measures about 1.25" x .75".
  • Visibility: silver is even less visible from a distance.
  • Height: 35 inches for black and 36 inches for the silver
  • Can cut with scissors
  • Ideal for homeowner associations
  • Cable ties (provided) to attach uv mesh netting to deck posts.
  • Eye screws (provided) to attach plastic netting to deck surface.

There are two other lengths available.

Thank you for your question.

Barbara

How to Install Cardinal Gates Deck Shield Netting on Outdoor Decks for Child Safety

by Barbara 22. September 2010 10:52

Question about Cardinal Gates 50 Ft. Black Deck Shield Netting or the Cardinal Gates 50 Ft. Silver Deck Netting

Q: "How difficult is installation of this deck netting? How long should I expect it to last? Our deck is shaded part of the day. Thanks. Joan.

Answer: Deck netting is easy to install. And it should last at minimum several years depending upon your location.

Installation of this outdoor safety netting is easier with two people although one person can do it. With two people, it is easier to stretch the netting and secure it. There are cable ties provided to attach the UV resistant mesh netting to the deck posts. Eye screws are also provided to attach the plastic netting to the deck surface. Some sun rot over time can be expected depending upon the amount of sun exposure. There is no material that is 100% rot resistant.

  • Height: 36 inches for black and 36 inches for the silver

Deck Netting Features:

  • Material: durable, weather-resistant plastic netting for child proofing.(polypropylene)
  • UV protected: sun "rot" is reduced.
  • Installation: quick and easy.
  • Cable ties (provided) to attach uv mesh netting to deck posts.
  • Eye screws (provided) to attach plastic netting to deck surface.
  • Barely visible from a distance.

If you need shorter lengths, please contact us. We sell 15 ft and 30 ft lengths in both black and silver.

Thanks for your question. Please contact us if you need more help or have additional questions.

Deck Netting to Block Openings in Picket Fence

by Barbara 24. June 2009 10:22

Question about using Black Deck Shield Deck Netting or Cardinal Gates 50 Ft. Silver Deck Netting to keep dogs in a yard.

Q: "I installed a fence several years ago when I purchased a dog. It is a white plastic picket fence . My problem is I now have small dogs and one keeps getting out in between the pickets. Is there anything you sell for me to put on the fence that won't look too bad. I was looking at the deck netting for children, which comes in 50 feet wide and 35 in tall lengths. Do you think that is o.k. or do you have any other suggestions? Thank you in advance for your help." Barbara C.

Answer: Thank you for this novel but practical use for the UV treated deck netting. Yes, this should keep your dogs inside and should be practically invisible from both sides. Black virtually disappears when you look at it, at least with deck netting. Attach the net with clear plastic cable ties. This is also a great idea for families with little children. Those openings might be just wide enough for a child to get a head or a leg stuck which could be a disaster. I would recommend the more expensive silver because it is thicker and more resistant to rot than the black as well as being less visible on a white fence.

Thanks for your question.
Enjoy your pups!

Can Deck Netting Be Used to Childproof a Balcony?

by Barbara 12. July 2003 09:39

Adrienne asks: "Can you use outdoor deck netting i.e. Deck Shield Netting or Cardinal Gates 50 Ft. Silver Deck Nettingto block the open area between the balcony top railing and the roof of the balcony to keep a child from falling over the balcony? If not, do you know of a product made to prevent falls from over a balcony railing?"

Dear Adrienne,

No, outdoor deck netting would not work in your application. Deck Shield is durable, weather-resistant polypropylene plastic netting, UV protected. Cable ties and eye screws provided to attach the mesh netting to deck posts and to the deck surface. Without permanent supports attached to the balcony roof and the top railing, this netting could not safely block that opening.

One way to childproof that area would be to have a carpenter install a sturdy frame in that area. Safe Home Products sells both removeable Guardian Angel and John Sterling brand window guards that can be installed vertically inside that frame to protect that dangerous opening. If this was an exterior balcony above the 6th story, window guards need to be permanently fixed as most fire truck ladders don't extend above the 6th story. One customer had a similar frame installed along with Guardian Angel guards to childproof an interior balcony overlooking her family room.

Thanks for your question.

Sincerely, Barbara
