Protect Sharp Corners of Exterior Metal Posts With UV Treated, Anti-Bacterial, Molded Foam Basic Corner Strips

Question about how to safetyproof metal square posts in a Headstart playground area with Boing yellow corner strips

Q: "The director of my Headstart Program wants to protect children in our playground from (16) sixteen 90 degree angle square metal posts. He wants each post protected at least 48 inches from the base of each post. Four metal posts are 4 inches on a side. The other 12 metal metal posts are 3 inches on a side. What do you suggest? Thanks. Helen from Texas."

Answer: After reviewing all the options, I phoned my manufacturer. The only option is to purchase the Basic Corner Strips, cut them and stack them to the appropriate height. These are "Skin Urethane" molded foam strips with a shock absorbing "inner" foam and a thick outer “skin” to protect from abrasion, UV rays, moisture and bacteria.

Polyurethane is a completely self-skinning polymer that is stain-resistant, puncture-resistant and remarkably easy to clean.It resists staining caused by grease, chemicals, waste products, and other liquids, and can be cleaned as easily as a countertop. Polyurethane is naturally antibacterial/antimicrobial and odor-resistant, making it ideal for clean room environments.

Each shape of protective padding or protective corners is made to specific dimensions and baked in a mold for 30-40 minutes. This basic corner strip is currently available in yellow, red, green, blue, orange and ivory. The primary colors are the most popular for safety proofing, especially the yellow. Black and grey are usually available. At this writing, January 7, 2013, neither is available.

I suggest you purchase the case of 25 yellow as you need at least 20 and this is the most economical way to buy. Each stick is 39.5 inches long (39.4 inches on the inside) by 2.25 inches by 2.25 inches and 1/2 inch thick. Cut the sticks to stack them the height that you want. Put the cut side at the bottom and use silicone to seal that edge when you cut these lengths to stack to the 48 inches that your director wants: then water and moisture do not effect the strip. These strips are made to be installed either inside or outside. You need a minimum of 20 strips to cover the 48 inches. This product covers the sharp corner edges of the 90 degree angle posts. There is no product to will "fill in" the missing space.

Childproofing A Home Against the Biggest Home Risks to Children

Question about the most common dangers to children in and around homes.

Q: "We have a 6 month old baby, our first. Where should we begin to childproof our home? What are the biggest risks to a toddler or younger child? Thanks. Sue."

Answer: According to the USA Today, July 5, 2012 report, the Consumer Protection Product Safety Commission lists drowning, poisoning and tipping furniture as most common dangers. You may recall the baby crib recall. The cribs our parents used for us and we used for our children and grandchildren can no longer be sold. Remember the double release locks you pushed with your foot and the side dropped?  The Commission received reports and does research to determine which products are safe.

Drowning, poisoning and tipping furniture are considered the most common risks to young children. Cordless window blinds are recommended to reduce risks of strangulation.

The COSC recommends that whatever safety devices you buy for do-it-yourself installation or have installed by handymen or professional childproofers meet voluntary industry standards or are recommended by the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association.

Common sense tells you that poisons, medications, dishwasher detergent, etc. must be stored in secure places whether that place is a cupboard or a closet.

Safety Tip: Increase Warehouse and Industrial Safety with Edge Pads on Sharp Edges

Question about Kids Edge Cushion Pad Large Profile 2 3/8 x 2 3/8 x 36 Inches, Black 100/Case

Q: "Is this the correct product to cover sharp edges of warehouse shelving? Are there other options? Are there corners to match? We need to increase our warehouse safety. Thanks. Sam."

Answer: To choose the correct product or products, first determine the width  or widths you need to cover. Once you have decided that, then choose a color.

For example, the most economical way to purchase the wide edge cushioning is in the 2 3/8 inch x 2 3/8 inch x 36 inch lengths either in boxes of 48 or 100 pieces. That edge padding comes in ivory, gray, taupe , brown and black. Gray and black are currently the more popular colors. If you do not need the width, then the Kids Edge Cushion Padding 1x1 in.YELLOW 100 Ft. with Tape or the Kids Edge Cushion Pad 1 x 1 in. 400 Ft. YELLOW NO TAPE that you attach with adhesive from a caulking gun. Both products come in brown, gray, ivory and black as well.

There are corners to match each width of edge pad. Custom sized corners are available as well.

Another option is more expensive. That is to use the Boing Skin Urethane Corner Cushion Strips which are wider and a little longer. The favorite for warehouses is the Boing Yellow Corner Cushions each of which measures approximately 39.4 inches long by 2.25" x 2.25" x 1/2" thick. Each strip is made from skinned urethane foam which gives it more resilience.

Installing a Kids Edge Hearth Pad with Metal Backing to Protect Toddler Against Injury

Question about the Kids Edge Hearth Pad Metal Frame BROWN, to 78 in.

Q: "I have a fireplace hearth that is made of irregular stones. It is straight across the front and has two returns each of which is about 20 inches. So it is a rectangle. The actual length is 90 inches. How does the metal attach to the hearth and what do I need to do to make it fit?  I have a toddler and am worried about her getting hurt.Thanks. Adam."

Answer: This is the correct hearth pad for an irregular stone hearth. First, the hearth must be at least 1.5 inches above the floor. Second, you will need to purchase an Kids Edge Metal Hearth Pad Extension, BROWN, 24 In. to add to the middle of your hearth pad for the proper length.

To install the hearth pad after unpacking:

  1. Remove tape on tightening rod (6). Remove filler pad (2) from inside cardboard insert and set aside for later use.
  2. There are two sections. The left side is completely covered with pad. The right side, partially covered with pad, slides under the left side for adjustment. You would add the extension to this part.
  3. Then extend sections of unit and place on hearth.
  4. Pull section together until snug on hearth.
  5. Without allowing sections to slide, remove unit and turn over to expose tightening rod.
  6. Insert rod hook into nearest hole and pull sections apart so there is enough tension to keep the hook in hole.
  7. Reposition unit on hearth. Insert Phillips screwdriver into hole at right corner
  8. Turn tightening bolt clockwise until tension is felt.
  9. Make sure the unit is in place by pushing down and back at corners.
  10. Tighten bolt further until unit is secure on hearth.
  11. NOTE: if unit is not secure and tightening bolt will not turn further, then loosen bolt, remove unit and move adjustment hook to next hole. Now reinstall unit.
  12. CAUTION: IT IS POSSIBLE TO TIGHTEN BOLT TOO MUCH CAUSING ENDS TO FLARE OUT CAUSING LOSS OF GRIP.

CUTTING FILLER PAD

  1. For appearance, this step is IMPORTANT. Measure the gap where frame is exposed. Add 3/8 inch to that measurement and mark the filler pad
  2. Place pad on edge of cardboard box, matching mark on pad with black alignment on box.
  3. Use only a sharp long-blade knife such as a fillet knife. DO NOT use a razor knife, utility knife, or other short-blade knife.
  4. Lubricate entire length of knife blade with liquid soap or soapy water.
  5. With light pressure, move knife back and forth, keeping the blade straight with alignment line.
  6.  After top half of pad is cut, turn pad over and repeat.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: The Cardinal Gates Metal-Backed Hearth Guard is designed to help prevent injuries. However, it is always possible for some injuries to occur even thought a protective device is used. We suggest adult supervision at all times. PAD IS “UL RECOGNIZED.”


INSTALLING FILLER PAD

  1. Peel off adhesive backing that bonds to front of frame only.
  2. Carefully press right end of filler pad against pad on right side of frame.
  3. Allow filler pad to rest on top of frame while pressing front of pad into place.
  4. Once the front of filler pad is bonded to frame, lift top corner of filler pad and peel off remainder of adhesive backing.
  5. Now press down on top of filler pad to bond to frame.
  6. Installation is now complete. To remove unit, simply loosen bolt to release tension.

Install Fire Retardent, UV Protected Safety Edge Cushion and Wall Pad to Safety Proof a Warehouse

Question about installation of Boing Fire Retardant Safety Wall Pad, 31x11.75 In, YELLOW, 4/BX and Boing Edge Corner Strip,UV Treated,YELLOW, 25/CS

Q: "We need to safety proof a warehouse. The fire retardant safety wall pad and corner strips in bright yellow would meet our needs. I notice that nothing is supplied with either item for installation. What is the best way to install? Thanks. Pete"

Answer: There are several options available to install safety edge corner strips and wall pads. Most customers use the silicone adhesive because it is less trouble and more permanent. Both products are available at most hardware stores.

  1. ADHESIVE TAPE OPTION: 3M VHB (Very High Bond) tape #5925. The only tape that will adhere to both the safety cushion products and to most other surfaces. Requires 72 hours for maximum adhesion, more expensive than silicone.
  2. SILICONE ADHESIVE: heavy duty adhesion, ability to add a bead around the outer edge to seal off from dirt, liquids or tampering. Adheres to almost any surface including rough textures like brick

3M VHB (Very High Bond) Tape #5925 Properties

  • A very conformable, double-sided, pressure-sensitive, closed-cell acrylic foam tape with a PE film liner. 25 mil thick.
  • Color: Black
  • Width: 1/2" or 1 "
  • Thickness: .06" (25 mil)
  • Incredible VHB strength guarantees a strong bond.
  • Soft conformable foam molds to irregular and textured surfaces.
  • Bonds powder painted metal, acrylics and polycarbonates with minimal priming or sanding.

1. Clean surfaces with mineral spirits or similar product to help adhesion

3. Wait for it to bond properly - IMPORTANT - bonding strength develops over time
- 20 minutes = 50% of ultimate strength
- 60 minutes = 75% of ultimate strength
- 24 hours = 90% of ultimate strength
- 72 hours = 100% of ultimate strength

Boing Brand, the Best Safety Pad Edge Cushion, Pole or Wall Pads for Outdoors

Question about the Wide Profile Black Edge Cushion by Cardinal Gates and the Boing Wide Profile Edge Padding.

Q: "Which of these edge paddings would work the best to protect an outdoor children's play area? There is a rough edged "paver" type wall that is porous. We want to coer it with a black padding to keep children from injuries. Also what is the best way to attach the padding? Thanks, Matt."

Answer: For indoor use, either brand of edge cushion padding will work. The Cardinal Gates padding sticks are the same as used for hearth guard. They come 9 to a box, each pad measuring 48 inches long and 2 3/8 inch x 2 3/8 inch on the lip.The Boing padding is 39.5" long x 2.25" x 2.25" x 1/2" thick.

For outdoor usage, we recommend using the Boing padding. It is made from what is called "skin urethane." That material is a special one-piece foam material which has both a shock absorbing "inner" foam and a  thick outer “skin” to protect from abrasion, UV rays, moisture and bacteria. It is designed for heavy duty use any where that there are sharp or dangerous edges, corners or surfaces. These uses include all types of recreational play areas, manufacturing and commercial, lLogistics and transportation facilities and equipment, military facilities, vehicles and equipment,medical and educational facilities, residential areas, etc.

Skin urethane Characteristics:

  • Safety. It has passed or surpassed a variety of safety requirements including Compression, Toxicity etc. Safety testing documentation available upon request. It has anti-bacterial properties and passes ASTM G21 testing for a variety of bacteria. Our Boing skin urethane products contains no PVC, lead or phthalates.
  • Not Fireproof. Does not currently contain fire and smoke retardants to meet Class A fire codes.
  • Durability: Durable relative to the amount and type of use. It will last many, many years if used in the manner it was designed. Longevity will be reduced by excessive or aggressive use.
  • Size tolerance: Can be up to a 5% variation in the size and density of the finished product. Skin urethane is produced in a mold - one piece at a time. The "baking" forcess that lasts 30-40 minutes can be affected by temperature and humidity which will vary by season and weather variations.
  • UV resistance:  Indoor or outdoor use.  All plastic products, even those that are UV treated, will eventually fade in the sun. The stronger the sun, the faster it fades. The darker the initial color, the stronger it fades. In addition the impact absorbing characteristics are reduced in very cold (below 32F) and very hot (over 100 F) weather. These factors will vary from region to region.
  • Impact absorption: impact absorbing characteristics are reduced in very cold (below 32F) and very hot (over 100 F) weather
  • Best UV resistance:4 primary colors (Red, Blue, Green, Yellow. Best not to expose to direct sunlight for extended periods.
  • Standard Adhesive Installing: For most installations, use “GE-Silicone I or II". The "II" version is supposed to be the improved version.
  • High Adhesion Installation: For those locations with a need for very high adhesions, use 3M VHB (Very High Bond tape)
  • Aluminum reinforced strips can be attached with screws (strips are pre-drilled & we provide the screws)
  • How much silicone do you need? The amount will vary with the type of surface to be protected and the degree of adhesion. As a rough estimate, you can generally attach the following numbers with a single 300ml tube:
    Wall Pad - 2 to 3; or
    Corner Strip - 6 to 8; or,
    Jumbo Corner Guard - 12 to 14; or,
    Post Pad - 1 to 2 sets
  • Silicone removal: scraping with a blade or craft knife ior use DAP's Silicone-Be-Gone. Oil-based solvents do require proper ventilation and gloves.Silicone can be removed by scraping with a blade or craft knife, but that can be laborious and isn't always practical.  Instead, try using a solvent that's made to remove silicone.There are a number of solvents on the market, but one of the best is Silicone-Be-Gone, a product made by DAP and developed specifically for removing silicone.  It can be used both for dissolving cured silicone and for cleaning up the area around freshly applied silicone.  The product takes several hours to work completely. It's also an oil-based solvent that has a noticeable odor, so use with proper ventilation.  It's also a good idea to wear gloves to minimize contact with your skin.  Krud Kutter, mineral spirits or rubbing alcohol also work and are safer but take more time and scraping.


Other questions about Boing Safety Pad Products:

  • Can you paint Skin Urethane products? We do not offer "painting" products or services.There are some "water-based" urethane paints to which you add color pigment. You can try, for example SC115 aliphatic polyurethane coating. May require SC-80 water based primer. There is also a solvent based SC89 flexible urethane coating but it requires excellent ventilation and proper protective mask. Due to the complexity of the product,variable sizes etc, we do not get involved in the sale of such products.See www.burmanfoam.com
  • How do you clean and maintain the safety padding?Under normal circumstances, little maintenance is required. Cleaning should be undertaken with normal household cleaning materials that are "non-abrasive". Limit your use of "solvent based" cleaners to the toughest cleaning jobs - follow manufacturers instructions. Unfortunately certain kinds of permanent markers like ballpoint pens and felt pens cannot be completely removed as the ink seeps into the surface layer.
  • Can Skin Urethane padding be used on the floor or under playground equipment?The current shapes we offer are not designed for flooring use. The Wall Guards can be placed on the floor - but are not rated for ASTM 1292 - Safety Surfacing for Flooring.
