by Barbara 17. July 2010 07:33

Question about Prevention Onocology Mouthwash

Q: "What are the benefits from using this onocology mouthwash? My sister is to start chemotherapy and radiation treatments for cancer and I'd like it to be as problem free as possible. Thanks. Mary.

Answer: Prevention oncology mouth wash was formulated to treat sore, inflamed or ulcerated tissue during chemotherapy or radiation treatment. This is an alcohol free mouthwash with a glycerine/menthol formula, no dyes, and is made especially for onocology patients, sore gums, oral mouth ulcers, thrush and more. Made in the USA by Prevention Laboratories, the mouthwash contains 4 safe active ingredients.

Prevention Oncology Mouth Rinse Ingredients:

  • zinc chloride – a powerful antimicrobial agent
  • sodium lauryl sulfate – a surfactant/detergent designed to help break up bacterial plaque.
  • sodium citrate – an astringent
  • anti-inflammatory hydrogen peroxide – an oxygenating agent helpful to the use of aerobic bacteria.

On-line reviews are quite positive. Our sales reflect these positive reviews. We recommend that your sister check with her physician. If her physician agrees, then definitely buy some for her. Chemo and radiation for cancer extend over weeks so we recommend you purchase a case of twelve 16 oz. bottles. Perhaps you can split it with other patients being treated if you do not need all of it.

Thanks you for your question and we wish your sister the best.

Sincerely, Barbara

Grandpa's Thylox Soap Acne Treatment Soap with Sulfur: Why Does It Work?

by Barbara 14. July 2010 09:10

Question about the Thylox Acne Soap

Q; "What makes this soap control acne? How should I use it? What are precautions? Is it strong like the sulfur preparations I use to "paint" my face? Thanks. Frank

Answer:  Grandpa Soap Company has made this acne control soap for many years. Thylox soap helps control acne by 4 different actions. It is an all vegetable oil soap, a 3%  sulfur soap that uses combination of sulfur and other fine ingredients for a better complexion. Sulfur is called a keratolytic agent: it encourages shedding of dead skin cells that can block pores if retained. Sulfur baths were used in ancient times to clear up skin problems. Sulfur also has comedolytic properties which means it helps to heal pre-existing comedones or blackheads and prevent formation of new ones. Remember not to pick blackheads and don't scrub them hard. One internet sources advisesthat squeezing can cause an infected pore or "zit." See your doctor for more information about how to handle pimples with pus as you don't want scars.

Thylox® Acne Bar Soap improves blemished skin by:

  • Softening the hard shell of acne blemishes (keratolytic action)
  • Helping to dissolve and remove blackheads.
  • Washing away excess oils which may cause blackheads.
  • Thoroughly cleansing skin, thus freshening the skin.

The instructions on the soap are:

  1. Use Thylox facial soap twice daily.
  2. Work up lather with hands or washcloth
  3. Apply to affected areas without scrubbing.
  4. Let dry about one minute, rinse thoroughly.

Cautions:

Dryness or irritation of the skin can occur if other topical acne medications are used at the same time or right after using this product. Unless directed by your physician, use only Thylox soap or the other medication. Do not get into eyes. Stop use and ask a doctor if excessive skin irritation develops or increases. Keep out of reach of children. If swallowed, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center immediately.

Grandpa's Brand Thylox Acne Soap Ingredients:

Active Ingredient: 3% sulfur
Inactive Ingredients: Sodium Palmate, Sodium Cocoate*, Water, Glycerin, Fragrance, Titanium Dioxide, Tetrasodium Etidronate, Pentasodium Pentetate, Cosmetic Orange Oxide. *May also contain Sodium Palm Kermalate.

Many people have both dry and oily areas on their face. We recommend primarily applying the soap to the oily areas. Grandpa's has other soaps that work better with dry areas such as the oatmeal soaps.

Xtra Fresh Air XFA-1500 Air Purifier Use UV-C and Fit in Return Air Ducts

by Barbara 21. June 2010 07:10

Question about the Xtra Fresh Air XFA-1500

Q: "How does this air purifier work? Can I install it myself? Does it fit all return air ducts?" Thanks. Steve.

Answer: The Xtra Fresh Air XFA-1500 replaces the Solaire unit that we previously sold. (If you need replacement bulbs for the Solaire, we have those available. Yes, you can install this unit and it will fit all cold air return air ducts. Where it goes in in the duct work nearest to the air filter.

The X-tra Fresh Air Purifier is a UV-C germicidal light element device that is set to turn on when the blower on your HVAC system is on. For best results, leave the blower running all the time. At a minimum, run the unit during summer if you live in a humid environment and use central air.

  • UV-C Germicidal Lamp Element: Produces cleansing rays similar to solar rays. Bathes cold air return (duct work) of central heating and cooling systems with germicidal UV-C rays!
  • Power Cord: Fast, Easy, Convenient. No hard wiring required. Plug Xtra Fresh Air into the nearest 110 volt outlet. Power cord is 9 feet long with 2-prong plug.
  • O3: Generates super Oxygenated Air (O3) in a scientifically-proven, safe, balanced concentration of 20 to 30 parts per billion (PPB) to purifier and freshen your household air … odors are destroyed, not masked.
  • Secure-hold Magnets: Simple installation and maintenance as magnets securely hold the Xtra Fresh Air unit in place no screws, and a simple fast cleaning and bulb replacement.

The only maintenance is a yearly change of the germicidal bulb. The bulb may appear to be working but it has lost its ability to provide UV-C and O3.

Along with the Xtra Fresh Air, we recommend installing an Envirosept electronic furnace filter panel if your panel size is one inch thick. These units come in dozens of sizes. Just see what size replaceable filter you are using and purchase accordingly. Just slip into the filter opening, plug into a nearby outlet and begin to work. Change filters every few weeks to monthly depending upon your needs. Here at the office, we change ours out every two to three weeks because of all the printers in use.

Thank you for your questions.

Sincerely,

Barbara

Control Dust Mite Allergies from Beds with Allergy Proof Encasements on Pillow and Mattresses

by Barbara 30. January 2010 09:41

Question abou the Restguard  King Sized Mattress Cover and the King allergy pillow covers.

Q: "We have a pillow top king bed that is less than a year old. My allergies to dust mites are getting worse. We change the sheets once a week, wash all the blankets and quilt once a month and run an air cleaner and use a HEPA air cleaner. Would these mattress and pillow covers help?" Thanks. Linda

Answer: Dust mites love the warmth and moisture your body provides while you are sleeping on a mattress with your head on a pillow. Their favorite food is dander (human skin flakes). The advantage of using Restguard covers is that dust mite populations cannot multiply in the mattress or pillows due to the polyurethane backing. Yet the cotton/poly terry surface is comfortable and cool to sleep on. Plus your pillow is made allergy proof if you prefer feathers or down to which many are allergic. You'll protect your pillow and bedding against stains as well.

And you can launder the covers as often as you choose since they have a 10 year warranty and are hot water safe for your washer and low dryer setting or line dry safe. You may need to wash them weekly if your allergies are severe. We wash ours every few weeks when we wash the blankets and comforter to get rid of dust mites and animal hair. (Yep, the cats and dog share the bed despite my allergies.)

I do suggest, from personal experience, that you put the pillow cases on with the non-zippered side first. It is easier. We put our Restguard mattress cover over a memory foam pad to protect it from the animals and us.  The memory foam pad units two extra long twins in a king frame: much easier to flip a twin than a king mattress over.

Thanks again for your question. Remember that mattress covers and encasements as well as pillow covers and encasements from RestGuard come in sizes from crib to California King.

Sincerely,

Barbara

What Makes an EnviroSept Furnace Air Filter Panel Better than a Washable One?

by Barbara 25. November 2009 10:07

Question about the Envirosept Electronic Furnace Filter Model 1625.

Q: "Currently I am using disposable furnace filters. I am considering the Envirosept but wonder if this performs any beter than the washable furnace filters. We do have allergies to dust. Thanks." Frank

Answer:  I have two answers, one based upon personal experience here at our Safe Home Products' office and one based upon information from the manufacturer.

At our offices, we have numerous printers plus the dust and dirt that drifts in from the frequent comings and goings into our large warehouse. We tried a fiberglass filter initially and then replaced it with a 1625 Envirosept furnace panel. The amount of dust that collects on desks, monitors, etc. decreased significantly with the Envirosept. We do have to change the filters about every three weeks.  I, too, am allergic to dust plus pollen and more. The EnviroSept keeps the air clean so I'm not sneezing!

Second, the manufacturer, Aqua Air Technologies shares that there is no way to compare the EnviroSept to either the frictional electrostatic filters or the standard fiberglass ones that you throw away. Mike explains that the Envirosept is up to a thousand times more effective under normal operating conditions.  "In theory, the plastic/glass strands are supposed to develop a static electric charge as the air passes through the filter, much like when you comb your hair. However, you need very low humidity to create any type of low level static charge. This charge is quickly lost as soon as the filter collects any dust, which insulates the plastic/glass strands and prevents the generation of any static charge. It would appear that the only benefit these filters offer is that they are permanent. Further, you do have the dirty task of washing these filters every two-three months. In addition, these filters have been known to cause major air restriction problems after several years that may damage your heating/cooling system."

Our unit is 5 years old and we've experienced no problems. The Envirosept units come in many sizes. All the units we sell come with 14 filter pads, enough for most people for at least 1 year.  The power used is minimal and the cost cannot be beat! Changing the filters is easy. Just unplug the panel. Slip it out. Open the clips. Remove the dirty filters, replace into the one inch slot after fastening the clips and plug in. Wipe off the grids with a damp microfiber cloth if necessary and let dry before refilling and replacing.

Thanks for your question.

Sincerely,

Barbara

Firmness of 4 Inch Egg Crate Hospital Grade Foam Mattress Pads

by Barbara 12. October 2009 08:20

Question about the GF convoluted foam mattress pads

Q: "I'm interested in your 4 inch convoluted foam mattress pads for king sized beds. I do not see a density of foam given. I've seen other pads advertised at 1.2 as soft, 1.5 as medium, and 1.8 as average. How dense are these?" Thanks Will

Answer: Thank you for your interesting question. According to G F Health, the density of the 7-4000 mattress topper is given in Indentation Load Deflection (ILD). This pad is 34 ILD which the customer service rep says is firm.

A check on the internet indicates this density is considered a 2.6 visco foam density. Bariatric foam has a 45 ILD rating. To understand what this means, see below. Definitions: Density is based upon the weight of one cubic foot of foam. 2.6 thus means the weight of one cubic foot of this 4 inch foam. Indentation Load Deflection or ILD: the unit of measure to indicate degree of firmness.

One website says the ideal ILD reading for a cushion would be 25 to 50 lbs at 25% ILD reading (the weight an indenter must weigh to compress a 4 inch thick piece of foam to 3 inches) If fifty square inches of 4 inch foam is compressed to 3 inches, that is 25% ILD. If the foam is compressed to 1.4 inches, that is a 65% ILD. For seating comfort, the ideal ILD reading is 25 to 40 pounds at 25%, and 45 to 100 pounds at 65%.

Thanks for your question.

Rest-Guard Protects New Twin Mattress for Recently Toilet Trained Son

by Barbara 24. September 2009 08:44

Question about the product Rest-Guard Twin 15 Inch High Mattress Cover

Q: "We are moving our son from his crib with its vinyl covered mattress to a twin bed within the next month. He was recently toilet trained and we guess he may have a few accidents yet in the next year. Is this mattress cover the best choice for us?  The new mattress is 15 inches high." Thanks. Susan

Answer: I do recommend this mattress cover. To make your life easier, I suggest you buy at least two covers. That way if he does have an accident during the night, you can change the bed then, if he wakes up, or the next morning and have the bed ready for his afternoon nap. These mattress covers are comfortable to sleep on, too. In the days when my sons were young, the only options were a plastic mattress cover which was either hot or cold unless you topped it with a mattress pad. I recall having quite a collection of mattress pads and sheets.

The Rest-Guard covers are virtually identical to Protect-A-Bed covers. They are hot water washable and dryable on low or line dry. My grandkids find them quite comfortable since they are cotton and polyester and absorbent. They keep dust mites in the mattress, too. We also sell total mattress encasements in all sizes and heights.

Thanks for your question.

Sincerely, Barbara

Economical My Weigh Baby Scale or Seca Baby Scale for Breast Fed Baby ?

by Barbara 21. September 2009 12:32

Question about the My Weigh and Seca Baby Scales

Q: "I'm looking for a baby or infant scale to track our baby's weight since my wife and I are tracking our baby's weight while breastfeeding. We'd like a digital scale but not one that will break the bank." Thanks. Bill

Answer: There are many baby scales from which to choose. Most are intended for medical professionals and include computer interfaces and special features.

I recommend these three electronic baby scales as being quite accurate and reasonably priced for at home use. Each one has a TARE function to zero out baby's clothing, an auto dampening function for accurate weight of a squirming baby and a removable weighing cradle. All have digital read-outs and operate on batteries.

1. The My Weigh MBS-2010 has a 44 pound capacity and retails for about $179. Accuracy: +-0.5 oz.

2. The My Weigh MBS-55 has a 55 pound capacity and retails currently for $169.00 Accuracy: +- 0.1oz, 0.005lb or 0.002kg, 2.0g.

3. The Seca 354 Electronic Digital Baby Scale with Breast Milk Intake Function and 44 Lb./20 Kg. Capacity. Current MSRP: about $200. This portable baby scale offers BMIF (Breast Milk Intake Function). With the breast-milk-intake function, easily determine the exact amount of breast milk intake of a baby.

The My Weigh scales are typically discounted more than the Seca. All three are quite accurate.

Thanks for your question.

Enjoy your baby!

Sincerely, Barbara

Do I Need a Different Otoscope for Looking in My Dog's Ears?

by Barbara 19. September 2009 06:03

Question about the Vetscope Petscope, and EarScopes.

Q: "I use a home otoscope, the EarScope, to examine my children's ears if I suspect an infection is beginning. Do I need a different otoscope to examine my dog's ears? He is a Basset Hound with floppy ears who has had two infections so far. Thanks." Susan

Answer: Yes, you would need to buy either the Vetscope or the Petscope. The difference lies in the focal point of the instrument. The pet otoscope or vet otoscope has a focal length of 6.5 inches. That is the correct focal distance for dogs and cats. There is a detailed instruction sheet with each of the units. You can ask your veterinarian for help during your next pet check-up.

Floppy eared dogs are more prone to ear infections. To prevent ear infections and insect infestations, the recommendations are to  check your pet’s ears each week. I use an ear cleaning solution and cotton swabs to clean my dogs' ears. They don't like having the liquid squirted into their ears.  Vets recommend regular ear cleaning especially for breeds with drop-ears (beagles, bassets, cockerspaniels, spaniels, pointers, hounds & more).

It is all a trade-off among the breeds. I have had only Boston Terriers for the past 30 years. Their ears stand up (usually) but they surely do snore. Only one ear infection in all that time. I have learned to use an ear drying solution after they get their showers or play in the wading pool.

Thanks for you question. Enjoy your dog!

Sincerely, Barbara
