Babinski, Taylor, Buck,Troemner, Queen and Other Reflex Hammers Compared

by Barbara 19. June 2012 14:17

Question about the types of reflex hammers for neurological testing and how they are used.

Q: "What differs among the various types of percussion hammers used to test reflexes? Why does a doctor need so many? Thanks. Tim."

Answer: From the WIKI, I have abstracted this information about the major types of reflex hammers. Thank you WIKI for your help! I did the best I could, Tim. I was unable to learn why a doctor needs so many hammers.

  • The Taylor reflex hammer or tomahawk reflex hammer was designed by John Madison Taylor in 1888. This is the most commonly used in the USA. The triangular rubber component is attached to a flat metal hammer. The traditional Taylor hammer is significantly lighter weight as compared to heavier European hammers.
  • The Queen Square reflex hammer was designed and named for the now National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery) in Queen Square London. Originally it was made with a bamboo or cane handle averaging 25 to 40 centimetres, attached to a 5 centimetre metal disk with a plastic bumper. Currently, the Queen Square hammer is usually made using plastic molds. This is still the favorite of  neurologists in the UK.
  • The Babinski reflex hammer designed by Joseph Babinski in 1912 looks like the Queen Square hammer except for a metallic handle often detachable. Babinski hammers often are telescoping for easier storage.
  • The Troemner reflex hammer was designed by Ernst Trömner. This percussion hammer looks like a two-headed mallet. The larger mallet is for testing tendon stretch reflexes. The smaller mallet is used to elicit percussion mytonia.
  • The Buck Hammer is a dual mallet-type hammer designed for attaining myotatic and cutaneous responses. The head is outfitted with a large and small mallet made of soft TPR. The chrome-plated brass handle is precisely balanced for increased control of force. An integrated pointed tip is included in the head for pinprick cutaneous reflex testing.
  • Combination Babinski Buck Hammer has a Babinski-Tip, dual-mallet buck percussor, screw-in pointed-tip and retractable brush.
  • Riester Dejerine Reflex Hammer,No Needle 8.26 In.
  • Berliner Percussion Hammer weighs just 3 ounces with a stainless steel handle, is 7.87 inches long and is used for reflex testing.

If you click on the links, you'll be able to get more information about some of the reflex hammers sold by Safe Home Products. We sell percussion hammers by major manufacturers such as Riester, MDF Instruments, Medline and Graham Field Health. These neurological hammers range from the inexpensive to those that are gold plated.

Thank you for your question. I learned a lot as well!

IV Wall Hooks Let Patients Carry IV Drip Bags Without Bulky IV Stand

by Barbara 15. June 2012 10:19

Question about IV Wall Hooks.

Q: "I work in a county hospital where we are working to keep down equipment expenditures while making life easier for patients and staff. I see you sell IV wall hooks. Please provide more information. The current portable IV holders we use are heavy, bulky and expensive as well as obstacles for both patients and staff to deal with. Thanks. Sara."

Answer: The inexpensive  IV Hook from Wall Control mounts on the wall near beds, toilets, ect. By using these wall hooks, health care facilities are safer and have more room both for staff and patients to navigate. There is no need, in most situations, for bulky IV holders or IV stands

Use wall mounted hooks to hold IV drips in areas such as bed side, restrooms and Cancer Treatment Clinics.  An ambulatory patient can carry his or her IV drip bag from one IV wall hook to another without pushing or pulling a bulky, cumbersome IV stand. Fewer accidents occur because medical personnel no longer have to trip and stumble around IV stands that always seem in the way. Simplify your medical facility with the IV Hook.

IV Wall Hook Specifications:

  • Wall Mount: 3.5 inches tall by 2 inches wide.
  • Made of steel that is powder coated white.
  • IV Hook: Stainless steel. Swivels in wall mount. 9 inch reach.
  • Mounting Supplies: Wall mount mounts with 2 #12 screws each is 1.25 inches long. Sheet rock anchors included.
  • Made in USA.
  • Quantity: 1 assembly per package.

Thank you for your question.

Pill Box Organizers and Medication Dispensers for the Visually Impaired

by Barbara 21. August 2009 05:13

Question about the Medready Basic Pill Box with Alarm Model 1700.

Q: "My mom is nearly blind. What pill boxes do you sell that would help her take her medications at the right times? We can set up her pills for her. Thanks." Margaret

Answer: At this time, these three are the best ones available.

The Medready has a loud low frequency alarm. She would only have access to the medications during the time that particular pill container was available to her. The Medready audible alarm settings: 1- 4 per day.  Alarm signal: alternates 5 seconds on, 1 second off . Stops when medication door is opened. Set alarm time interval for 3, 30, 45, 60 or 250 minutes. Alarm will continue to beep for that time interval until the medication door is opened or the alarm time is reached. Alarm intensity: 85 decibel alarm at 10 cm, 400Hz (low frequency alarm)similar to microwave alarm.

Thank you for your question.
