Sturdy Wood 3 Ft High Portable Pet Gates for Large or Jumping Dogs

by Barbara 9. August 2013 10:05

Question about how to keep dogs contained when we have company.

Question: "I have two large dogs. I don't want to use the pressure gates because they leave dents in the wall. The dogs are not aggressive. They can jump over a low gate with ease. What portable gates would you suggest? Thanks. Mary."

Answer: Cardinal Gates now offers Extra Tall Pet Gates. Made from wood, the gates are available in white, black or an oak finish.

All three share the same characteristics.

The Cardinal Gates Extra Tall Free Standing Pet Gate keeps large breeds and high jumping dogs contained. This wood gate is 3 feet tall: the width adjusts from 27.5 inches to 51 inches.  NOTE: For best results, use in a doorway or in a position where the gate makes contact with the wall or doorjamb. Ideally, expand the gate width  beyond the width of the opening. Dog and gate should be on the same side of the opening.

Cardinal Gates Extra Tall Free Standing Pet Gate Features:

  • Simple to set up and to use.
  • Height: 3 feet, keeps most high jumping dogs contained.
  • Width: Expands from 27.5 to 51 inches
  • Solid wood construction
  • Thick, heavy-duty spindles
  • Bar spacing of 2 inches.
  • Rubber feet protect floors
  • Sliding feet can be permanently attached if desired.
  • This gate is not recommended for top-of-stairway use nor should it be used as a child safety gate.
  • The Extra Tall Free Standing Pet Gate is available in black, white, or oak.

Thanks for your question.

Sincerely,

Barbara

Free Standing Pet Gate or Wall Mounted Child Gate With Door Can Be Extra Wide Gates Using Extensions

by Barbara 11. July 2012 14:26

Question about the Cardinal Gates Home Safety VersaGate

Q: "I need a gate for a extra wide doorway. I have both dogs and small children. Yet I would like to be able to open a door in the gate rather than step over it. Which gate or gates do you recommend? My dogs are small ones. Thanks. Sheri."

Answer: The Versagate VG-65 won the Child Safety House Calls Pediatricians Childproofing Product Award 2010 for its modular system, quality metal construction and its 24 inch door. Choose from white steel, light oak stained beechwood with metal gate frame or black metal. The VersaGate VG-65 Basic Gate System Features:

  • Door Section with 24 inch gate: 40 inches total width
  • Gate Extensions: 2, each 20 inches wide.
  • Two rubber-coated, stabilizing feet to increase stability and prevent scratching floors. Use two for the wide door section and one for each gate extension. Each foot is 6 inches in diameter and one inch high. The bottom is textured to them less likely to skid on a slick floor surface.
  • For maximum stability, the feet can be mounted to the floor.
  • Gate Height: 30.5 Inches.
  • Bar Spacing: 2.25 Inches.
  • Gate and frame are both made from strong, sturdy steel except in the beechwood gate which is wood with a metal frame.
  • Door Operation: Push red safety button and lift handle 90 degrees upwards. Pull gate to open. Close gate and lower handle back to original postion. Gate will click when locked.
  • Your Cardinal Gate is warranted to be free of manufacturing defects for a period of one year from the date of purchase when used in homes, and according to manufacturers instructions. When used commercially, such as day care centers, the warranty is 90 days.
  • All Cardinal Gates are JPMA certified & adhere to guidelines as set forth by the JPMA & the Consumer Products Safety Commission.

The VersaGate VG-65 expands to a maximum of 77.25 inches in width. For each additional 1.25 feet needed (16 inches), add one VG-20 extension.(not included). Or choose the VG-10 (not included) or the VG-40 inch extensions (not included).

For additional stability, attach to side walls for a very stable child gate or dog gate. More effective wall-mounting hardware (vertical hole pattern) means the gate can be removed from the wall without removing the screws. Added feet means the Versagate can be installed in a straight line.  Baseboard shims plus easier mounting to stabilizing feet makes this a great pet gate or child gate for almost any situation.

This has been one of our more popular gates.

Wooden Pet Gates Expand, Move, Step Over, Have Extensions Available and and Contain Most Small Pets

by Barbara 26. September 2010 12:34

Question about the Wooden Pet Gate, Step-Over, 20"Tall Walnut Finish.

Q: "I am looking for an expandable pet gate for small dogs that I can move from area to area of my house. Some areas that will need spanned are larger. Will this gate meet my needs? How large can I make it? Is is hard to move? I have two Chihuahuas. They are not jumpers What are the options? Thanks. Sheila.

Answer: This is a quality wooden gate made for Cardinal Gates for small dogs, small puppies and non-jumping dogs. The small dog gate is 20 inches tall, 1 inch thick and has bar spacings of 2.25 inches. The gate fits openings from 28 inches to 51.75 inches. Each gate extension adds 22.25 inches of width to the Step Over Gate. Each extension comes with one 'foot' piece. Each foot fits securely over the gate and has rubber feet to avoid harming floors. Add as many extensions as you like for a very long gate. The pet gate is easily moved. The basic gate expands and weighs about 6 lbs. Each extension weighs just under 5 pounds.

The gate and extensions come in several colors. All gates and extensions and foot pieces are made of hard wood.

Your choices are:

Do remember this is a free-standing gate with wide feet pieces. This is NOT a child safety gate or a gate for small jumping dogs. For example, a Boston Terrier coudl easily jump this gate as well as one that is 4 feet tall if he or she had a running start or desire.

Thanks for your question.

Fitting a Child Gate or Pet Gate to a Wider Doorway

by Barbara 9. March 2009 09:52

Question about the JPMA and Consumer Products Safety Commission approved Cardinal Gates: Metal Pressure Gate, Duragate MB-25, Stairway Special Gate SS-30A Clear Plastic and Metal Gate CP-30 and Auto-Close Self-Locking Safety Gate MG-15B.

Q: " How do I choose the correct gate for the wider doorways in my home? I have dogs and babies who need separation. I'm not sure which gate to buy." Thanks. Janet

Answer: I recommend these actions:

  1. Accurately measure the actual door way openings with a metal retractable tape.
  2. Look at the maximum doorway fit of each gate without an extension.
  3. Decide whether you want a gate that permanently mounts, one that can accept height extensions to keep larger dogs in or out of rooms, etc. Several different gates may meet your specs.
  4. Subtract the gate maximum width from the doorway opening.
  5. Choose 1 or more width extensions, 10.5 inches and 21.75 inches to fill in that missing space for the Duragate, the Stairway Special and the Auto-Close Gates. For the metal pressure gate, there are 5 inch and 10.25 inch extensions.

For example, if your door opening is 52 inches:

  • The steel Duragate fits a maximum opening of 41.5 inches. Subtract the gate from the opening and your distance left is 10.5 inches. The SF-BX-1WH is a 10.5 inch extension for 41.5" to 54" openings. Choose one of this extension.
  • The white self-locking baby gate MG-15B fits a maximum opening of 40.5 inches. There is an 11.5 inch gap which means you would need the wider extension 21.75 inch Extension SF-BX-2WH for 0penings 51 inches to 61.75 inches.

If your doorway opening is 72 inches:

  • All Steel Duragate: Your distance left is 30.5 inches. Subtract 41.5 inches from the 72 inch opening. Now subtract 21.75 from the remainder. You have 8.75 inches left. So you need one of the BX-1 and one of the BX-2. I also recommend a T-Bar support.
  • Auto Close Aluminum Gate MG-15B: Your distance left is 31.5 inches. Subtract 40.5 inches from 72 inches. Then subtract 21.75 from the 31.5. You still need one each of the extensions plus a support.

Gates are not recommended for children over 24 months old.

If you need help, please email us at sales@safehomeproducts.com with your measurements, color preference, gate preference (pressure, clear, steel, autoclose, stairway, etc.). We'll send you our recommendations and you can order on line or phone us.

Thanks again for your question. Sincerely, Barbara

How High a Gate to Separate a Great Pyrenees & Irish Wolfhound?

by Barbara 1. July 2008 07:39

Question about the product Product Code: SF-MG-25-TPX-T -Taupe Duragate Metal Pet Gate with Height Extension

Q:"I have a great pyrenees and an irish wolfhound. One weighs 100 lbs; the other weighs 140 lbs. They need to be separated for a while in the house. Iwill need to put the gate in a doorway that does not have a door attached. Do I really need the extra 8 inches since I will raise the gate 4 inches above ground giving me a total height of 42 inches. Am i correct?"

Answer: The MG-25-TPX-T does include the 8 inch height extension. This is a height of 29.5 inches plus 8 inches plus 4 inches equals 41.5 inches. See the installation guide on the webpage for specifics. As long as you have studs on both sides of the doorway, the installation should be fast. Answering the extension question is a bit more complicated.

The questions you must answer are how high can each of your dogs jump? Once you answer that question, then choose either the MG-25 in taupe, the MG-25-TPX-T or the MG-25-TPX-T with the additonal 8 inch extension.

Thanks for your question.

Sincerely, Barbara
