Question about the Safe-T-Alert Rebates on 12V Propane Gas and Carbon Monoxide Alarms.

Answer: The rebate eligible products included and amount of rebates are as follows:

• RV Carbon Monoxide/LP Gas Alarm model 35-741, 35-742,70-742 or 70-742 Kit is eligible for a $20 rebate.
• RV Carbon Monoxide Alarm model 60-541, 60-542, 65-541 or 65-542 is eligible for a $10 rebate

Question about the Safety Siren Propane and Natural Gas Alarm

Answer: In your situation, you need a minimum of two carbon monoxide alarms, one inside your bedroom and one in the living area at the other end. You need 3 propane gas alarms. Each one of your gas appliances needs a combustible gas alarm installed near to it. This means inside the closets where the furnace and the water heater reside. We understand from a park home model reseller that at least the newer models do have outlets near the appliances and near the floor.

Our suggestion is that you install two of the RV carbon monoxide units, the CoStar 9V Battery UL Home and RV Carbon Monoxide Alarm. This is because these units can handle both high humidity and high temperatures without sensors being destroyed. Operating Environment:-40 degrees F to +151 degrees F 15% to 95% RH. Since they are battery powered, you don't have to worry about plugging them into those very scarce outlets. Just change the battery out once a year.

As far as the propane alarms are concerned, we recommend that you use direct plug in units only if you have outlets close to the appliance and low to the floor. Propane is heavier than air so it sinks and pools around the bottom of an appliance. Otherwise, we recommend that you install the Safe-T-Alert Propane Natural Gas Alarm, 120V because it has a 65 inch cord that allows proper placement probably 99% of the time. This unit has micro current technology which means it uses only 3.8 watts of energy, which is about US $3.00 per year to operate. Since propane gas is heavier than air, mount this gas alarm within 4 to 20 inches of the floor. For methane or natural gas which is lighter than room air, mount the detector within 6 inches from the ceiling or on the ceiling at least 12 inches from a wall.

Remember that carbon monoxide is a by product of incomplete combustion of fossil fuels like propane, natural gas, wood, etc. Raw propane or natural gas detectors won't detect carbon monoxide nor will carbon monoxide sensors detect raw leaking gas. We do sell a combination plug in unit as well. Proper placement for carbon monoxide detector alarms is different from combustible gas alarms.  For example, gas-burning appliances may emit it a small amount of carbon monoxide when starting up. So this carbon monoxide alarm should be placed 15 feet or more from heating or cooking appliances and never hear a very humid room such as a bathroom.

Question about the Safe-T-Alert RV Propane Gas Alarms, Models 35-742, 30-441, 30-442 and 70-742

Answer:  CCI closed down in February 2009.

To determine which unit you need, you need first to answer this question: Do you have a unit that shuts off the propane gas valve if there is a leak or is yours a propane gas alarm without an automatic gas valve shut-off?

For a unit that has a gas valve shut off, you need a 70-742-R Kit which is available in white, brown or almond. This kit includes the solenoid valve. Do not connect the Safe-T-Alert to any other valve or you risk a fire. These units replace the 7719.04 and 7719.7.

For a recessed or flush mount propane alarm only, the recessed propane gas alarm model 30-442 in brown, white or almond fits the CCI LP Gas Alarm Cut Out (7770 series) for Flush Mount Models. These can be mounted vertically or horizontally.

For a recessed or flush mount propane alarm only, you can add a carbon monoxide alarm and propane gas combination unit, the recessed 35-442 in brown, white or almond fits the CCI LP Gas Alarm Cut Out (7770 series) for Flush Mount Models. These can be mounted vertically or horizontally.

For a surface mount propane alarm only, the 30-441 in brown, white or almond replaces the CCI LP Gas Alarm 7770 surface mount series These can be mounted vertically or horizontally.

For a combination carbon monoxide and propane gas alarm, choose the 35-542 recessed unit in brown , 35-542 recessed unit in white or the special order 35-542 recessed combination unit in black. The cut out is the same as the CCI 7700 series cut-out.. Note: Some CCI units in Fleetwood or Winnebago RV's have two power leads. This unit has only one. Connect the red power lead to the coach power supply and cap or remove the other power lead. Use butt connectors to replace any unit with spade connections

CARBON MONOXIDE & PROPANE ALARM REPLACEMENT NOTICE: Note to Customers:

All Safe-T-Alert Propane and Carbon Monoxide Alarms that are 5 years old and older are beyond their Mandatory Replacement Time and MUST be replaced.

Background: Underwriters’ Laboratories (UL®) Carbon Monoxide Standard UL 2034 and Canadian Standards Association (CSA®) CSA 119.2 now require that all Carbon Monoxide alarms be designed to stop service in 3 to 5 years . UL and CSA have determined that Carbon Monoxide alarms have a limited life. Propane alarms use similar sensors and UL will require the same service life in the near future.

ALL MTI Propane and Carbon Monoxide alarms which are over five (5) years old MUST be replaced. The following Safe-T-Alert Carbon Monoxide Alarm Models MUST be replaced: SA-4, SA-5, 50-541 and 50-542. Models 60-541 and 60-542 over five (5) years old MUST be replaced.The following Safe-T-Alert Propane Alarms Models MUST be replaced: SA-7 and SA-8. Models 30-441,30-442, 40-441 and 40-442 that are over five (5) years old MUST be replaced.

Important! Only install CO and Propane alarms that are UL or CSA listed for Recreational Vehicle Use

Q: "I have anosmia, i.e. I have lost my sense of smell. We have natural gas heat, a natural gas water heater and a natural gas cooking stove. I cannot smell a gas leak. Which gas detector do you recommend?"

Answer: Currently, we sell two brands of combustible gas alarms and an automatic gas shut off system that shuts off gas and sounds a loud alarm when a significant gas leak occurs.

Two brands are UL1484 listed for use with natural gas and propane gas and also work with gasoline fumes and butane fumes. These are the Safe-T-Alert 40-411AC and the Safety Siren Combustible Gas Alarm and the Safety Siren CO and Combustible Gas Alarm.

The advantage of the Safe-T-Alert is the long cord for proper positioning of the detector, i.e. high and near the appliance for natural gas and low and near the appliance for propane. We also sell the Safe-T-Alert Combustible Gas Alarm in a 230VAC unit for Europe and Asia. The Safety Siren unit is a direct plug in with a safety tab that the outlet cover center screw (standard 2 or 3 prong outlet) goes through so the unit cannot be easily removed. Most customers who buy the Safety Siren model install an electrical outlet at the proper height for natural gas or propane.

All our combustible gas alarms sound at less than 25% of the lower explosive or flammable level of the gas.

Answer: Dear Al,

Safe Home Products does not sell home monitors with digital readouts to tell you the exact levels. Most communities have home testing companies with sophisticated equipment to test your home over a period of days.

We do sell  several different carbon monoxide alarms plus combustible gas alarms and one valve shut-off units.  Brands include Safe-T-Alert, Quantum, Fire-x, and Kidde. The 120VAC carbon monoxide alarms by Safe-T-Alert are direct plug in, line cord (for proper placement), and hard-wired. Quantum has 9V battery operated carbon monoxide alarms and 12V/24V hard wired security system carbon monoxide alarms. Quantum also offers marine and RV units. Carbon monoxide can cause health problems as well as asphyxiation by suffocation.

We also sell propane and natural gas alarms by three manufacturers, Safe-T-Alert, Safety Siren and Safety First that will alert you to raw gas leaks before levels reach those where explosions or fire will occur. If you are worried about gas leaks from your furnace or other appliance, we recommend Scentry II Gas Alarm with Automatic Gas Valve Shut-Off.

If you have a cabin that uses propane gas only for heating and lighting, Safety First now has a 12V gas valve as well. This can run from a 12V battery or two that is re-charged using a solar panel.It is important to use the recommended gas valve or the Safety First unit will not function properly. We do recommend that you have your propane using appliances checked at least once a year by a professional and contact your propane supplier if you suspect a raw gas leak inside or outside your home.
