Be Safer After Post Bunion Surgery, Ankle Surgery, Knee Surgery, etc. With Safety Products

by Barbara 30. January 2014 06:52

Question about products to make recovery after foot surgery safer.

Q: "I am scheduled to have bunion surgery in a few weeks. Do you have suggestions about what preparations I need to make and what products I need to make my recovery safer. Thanks, Mary."

Answer: Having gone through bunion surgery in November 2013, I have some knowledge about this, for sure! I wish someone had given me this information prior to my surgery.

First, at the visit where you schedule the surgery date, ask the doctor for a medical statement so you can get a temporary handicapped parking permit. In the State of Iowa this means filling out a short form and sending it to a state office with the doctor's statement. In my case, I learned about this permit 6 weeks after my surgery. My sister knew Pennsylvania had them. I got the mdical statement and took the on-line form to the orthopedist after my hospital discharge. (I was one of the 10% who developed an infection and spent 5 days on IV antibiotics in the hospital two weeks after surgery). In Iowa, the permit is good for 6 months. (Oh, and if your foot hurts worse 5 days after surgery, what you need is to see the doctor quickly, not be prescribed more pain medicine. I was not to unwrap the foot prior to the first post-op visit and took the additional pain meds.

Second, here are some items I believe you need for safety prior to your surgery.

  1. A foldable walker with wheels. Buy or borrow one. Medicare does pay for walkers. Your insurance might. Have it at home when you return from surgery. Why? Because the "boot" (Medicare pays for this, too) is made so that you can put no weight on the front of your foot. Therefore walking is dangerous to say the least. Your "booted" foot is higher than your barefoot or foot with a shoe. Also getting on and off a toilet without a walker requires at least one grab bar (which my bathroom could not accommodate due to design. You will need this when you walk outside your house as well unless you have a wheelchair and someone to push it!
  2. A shower chair or bath bench. Borrow or buy one. I love my shower chair even now. Your foot cannot get wet and washing standing up is a real trick if you cannot put weight on both feet. My shower chair has side handles. For a shower, you take off the boot and wrap your foot in plastic bags, etc.
  3. Either a higher toilet or a toilet seat riser or one that clamps onto the toilet toilet seat with lid that clamps to the side of the toilet. Here is one with removable arm rests.Getting up and down off a low toilet is a real chore. We have had the higher toilets installed in two bathrooms.
  4. Grab bars. See below.
  5. Slip proof your ceramic tile floors. Either use Grip On solution which lasts for years and years or use lots of skid proof floor rugs and shower and bath mats.
  6. Make a chart for date, time, medications, etc. or buy a pill box with timer. You don't want to miss your meds!

Remember that you must keep your foot elevated above your heart level as much as possible to reduce swelling. This means you'll be sleeping on top of your comforter with your foot propped up on a large or many pillows. Ice packs do help when the boot is off. I found having an electric blanket or electric mattress pad under me and wool blankets as covers kept me comfortable in the winter. Get lots of library books or tape your favorite TV programs. You'll spend a lot of time prone those first weeks. Ask the doctor lots of questions like: do I have to wear the torture boot day and night? Etc. Do not miss your pain pills!

Home grab bar installations can be vertical, horizontal or diagonal.

1. Vertical grab bars  (straight up or down).  Have a handyman or carpenter install grab bars into studs or use anchoring devices.  A shorter vertical bar mounted at the tub or shower entrance helps the person to enter or exit without losing their balance and falling..  Two more grab bars in the shower or tub let the person rise from the tub or bath chair or give more stability when the person is washing herself or himself. Usually the grab bars are 12, 16 or 18 inches long. We also sell Lumex Chrome Grab Bars - 32 Inch, Knurled that have better gripping surface and have a 250 lb. weight capacity. Save if you need several by buying the Chrome Grab Bars, 32 In Knurled, 3/CS by Medline.  For those with glass sliding tub doors, the grab bars offer a secure way to regain balance.  In order to install this grab bar for my mother, the handyman had to remove the 1950's glass sliding doors as the door track interfered with the mounting.

2. Horizontal handicap grab bars. This installation gives the option of using the grab bar as a towel bar, too.  Typcially wall studs are 16 inches apart on center. If you examine other exposed areas of your home, you can determine more accurately where the centers are in the studs. Otherwise use a hollow wall anchor system available at hardware stores.  That is why 16 inch, 32 inch and 48 inch grab bars are most common.

3. Diagonal  installed. At the side of my Mom's toilet, there is a diagonally installed 32 inch grab bar. Installation may be more difficult. The positives are that grabbing a diagononal bar puts less stress on one's wrist. If installed in a shower, the diagonal bar is preferred by those who face only the shower head.  The horizontal bar has can be used facing forward or backward but the height if obviously the same no matter where one grabs.

Grab bars are  measured from the center of one flange (the round area that conceals the screws) to the center of the other flange. The flange covers typically measure about 1.5 inches on either side of the grab bar. So add three inches to the total length of the grab bar you need.

Safe Home sells quality grab bars from Lumex (Graham Field Health Products) and Medline Industries. Most are sold in packages of 3, all the same size. Lumex has individual packages as well. Your material/color choices include Chrome plated, White enamel over steel and Nickel Plated Steel. ADA compliant grab bars include the Carex brand from Medline in 12, 16, 18, and 24 inch sizes. Additional lengths are available. Just send us an email if your grab bars must be compliant with ADA.

Thank you for your question. Good luck with your surgery. By the way, I had an orthopedist do my foot: my podiatrist said that if he did it, I'd be on crutches for 6 weeks. I've since met women who had both feet done at the same time: they had family and friends care for them for several weeks.

Barbara

Installation Height for Carbon Monoxide Alarms Is Your Choice

by Barbara 8. February 2013 10:52

Question about  installation height for most effective use of carbon monoxide alarms

Q:"How high do I need to install carbon monoxide alarms in my home?" Thanks. Rebecca

Answer: According to information from one of our manufacturers, you can install a CO alarm at any height in your home. The reason is that the molecular weight of air is almost identical to the weight of carbon monoxide. Air is typically composed of 78% nitrogen and 21% oxygen. Nitrogen has a specific weight of 28.013 while carbon monoxide is almost identical 28.011. CO mixes with
Air as their weights are approximately the same.

We advise you put the unit high enough that a child cannot tamper with the unit. Also remember that a minimum of 3 carbon monoxide alarms are recommended for a two story home, one on each level near the stairwells. Put one inside each bedroom if you close bedroom doors at night.

Direct plug-in units, CO alarms connected to a 12 or 24 volt security system and 9 volt battery operated ones give you many options.

We prefer the Costar 9RV, a 9 volt battery powered CO alarm that is for homes or recreational vehicles. These easily mount with two screws. The units cannot be reinstalled on the mounts unless there are batteries installed.

For homes with wired security systems, the CoStar Security System Carbon Monoxide Alarm,12-24SIR is a great choice.

Costar carbon monoxide alarms use a unique sensor that mimics red blood cells. Each sensor takes 28 days to "grow." The sensor reacts with carbon monoxide just as red blood cells do in our bodies. In other words, when a human is exposed to CO, the oxygen in the blood that attaches to red blood cells is replaced gradually by carbon monoxide. When carbon monoxide levels in an area near the sensor reach a level of 70 parts per million in a period of 60 to 240 minutes, the sensor is saturated sufficiently to set off an alarm. Below 35 ppm no alarm will sound. At 150 ppm, the alarm goes off within 10 to 50 minutes. At a level of 400 ppm, the alarm sounds within 4 to 12 minutes. 400 ppm alarm within 4 to 15 minutes.

Safe Home also sells RV carbon monoxide alarms that wire to both 12 volt systems, the coach and the engine, and have a 9 volt battery back-up. The CoStar 12RV-DB 12V RV CO Alarm W/9V Battery Backup protects you even if the 12 volt system is disconnected.

We also sell co alarms by other manufacturers that plug directly into 120VAC outlets. The only problem here is that few outlets are above a child's reach.

Thanks for your question.

Barbara

Childproofing A Home Against the Biggest Home Risks to Children

by Barbara 8. July 2012 06:00

Question about the most common dangers to children in and around homes.

Q: "We have a 6 month old baby, our first. Where should we begin to childproof our home? What are the biggest risks to a toddler or younger child? Thanks. Sue."

Answer: According to the USA Today, July 5, 2012 report, the Consumer Protection Product Safety Commission lists drowning, poisoning and tipping furniture as most common dangers. You may recall the baby crib recall. The cribs our parents used for us and we used for our children and grandchildren can no longer be sold. Remember the double release locks you pushed with your foot and the side dropped?  The Commission received reports and does research to determine which products are safe.

Drowning, poisoning and tipping furniture are considered the most common risks to young children. Cordless window blinds are recommended to reduce risks of strangulation.

The COSC recommends that whatever safety devices you buy for do-it-yourself installation or have installed by handymen or professional childproofers meet voluntary industry standards or are recommended by the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association.

Common sense tells you that poisons, medications, dishwasher detergent, etc. must be stored in secure places whether that place is a cupboard or a closet.

Here are a few suggestions based upon our customers' purchases:

These are childproofing products that are easily installed and may save the life of your child or grandchild or a visiting child.

Thank you for your questions.

Barbara

ToppleStop Furniture Safety Straps Secure TVs and Furniture For Kid Safety

by Barbara 10. February 2012 08:50

Question about keeping TV sets from injuring or killing children using furniture securing devices.

Q:"In the USA Today on February 9, 2012, a news article talked about 4 children killed or critically injured in the Chicago area when TV's fell on them. How can I make sure my children are safe? We have one old style television and a big screen that sits on a table. Thanks. Sara.

Answer: TV's can injure or kill children. Even small sets when knocked off a tall dresser are dangerous. In 2010 or 2011 Consumer Reports recommended ToppleStop furniture and TV straps for securing furniture. Each set of Topple Stops has two straps, one secures to a wall stud on one to the TV set or the stand. One accident was when a TV set sat on a flimsy aquarium stand. TV sets must be on a heavy piece of furniture with slip resistant feet and a low center of gravity. Children also like to pull out dresser drawers and try to clim to the top: a disaster waiting to happen.

So Topple Stops are furniture straps that you attach to the back of solidly set furniture and secure to wall studs behind the furniture. Topple Stops let you anchor appliances and furniture that weighs up to 400 lbs. For items that weigh up to 200 lbs. install a minimum of 1 kit with two point attaching. You need two kits or four point attachment for objects that weigh 200 to 400 lbs. Remember that nothing substitutes for parental supervision.

For metal units, you attach Topple Stop half with an adhesive pad to a dry surface cleaned with isopropyl alcohol (that gets off any residual grease). Then you attach the other half to a wall stud.

For wooden units, the preferred attachment method is using #8 x 1 inch wood screws to attach the fasteners to the frame or the inside edges top or sides of the furniture.

The wall attachment requires using #10 x 2 inch wood screws to the wall studs behind the furniture. If studs are metal, use t-bar anchors to toggle bolts. You can use wall anchors if each has a minimum holding strength of 100 pounds.

Heavy Duty ToppleStop Furniture Fastening System Kit Contents:

  • Two (2) grey Thumb Lock fasteners, 2" long by one wide with 3/4" lock lever. Use with wood screws or 3M VHB adhesive attachment. (Bonding Times: Wait four hours before adding strap. Adhesive fully bonds after 72 hours.)
  • Two (2) 12" long, 3/4" wide grey locking strap with grommet for wood screw attachment.
  • Four (4) #8 x 1" wood screws for furniture attachment    Two (2) #10 x 2" wood screws for wood wall stud attachment.

Thumb lock fastener attaches to locking strap. Fastener can be moved and locked in either direction on the strap. Lift locking lever to "open." Lock fastener on strap by pushing lever down firmly. Note: Thumb Lock adhesive is non-hardening. Fasteners can be removed without damaging surface if slowly and gently pried off with appropriate tool.Suggestion: Install when children are not present, i.e. asleep for the night.

We also recommend Topple Stops for use in day care centers, hotels, motels, etc. to increase safety and reduce liability insurance costs.

Product Performance Warranty: This product does NOT replace child supervision. This product is only intended to help or reduce movement of equipment during jarring movement. It is common understanding that fastened equipment should fare better during jarring movement than equipment that is not fastened, helping to reduce the amount of damage and injury that could result. No warranty can be properly applied to the performance of the products due to the uncertainty of forces generated, and numerous variables involved in a jarring event, or natural disaster. Products that are defective in material and workmanship prior to installation of the product will be replaced. The user or third party installer accepts liability for injury, loss, or damage, direct or consequential, arising from use or misuse or inability to use the product.

Thanks for your question.

Cheap Breathalyzers Are Disposable, Accurate. Save Lives. Save Your License.

by Barbara 3. April 2011 10:41

Question about the Redline Disposable Breathalyser, Single Use, FDA Pre-Market Approved .

Q: "I've looked at the various AlcoHawk breathalyzers like the AlcoHAWK SLIM Alcohol Screener Breathalyzer and the AlcoHawk DOT Std. Alcohol Tester Breathalyzer ELITE. My problem is that I am a college senior, a man, and carrying one of these in my pocket takes up a lot of room. Plus it looks like I am about to be in some drinking contest! How accurate is the Redline disposable tester? I need to know when to call a cab rather than take a chance on driving drunk and risking an accident or a ticket. Thanks. Tim."

Answer: The Redline Disposable Breathalyser is cheap insurance against causing death, injury or a DUI. This is a single use disposable unit that uses alcohol reactive chemical crystals to give a quick reading of whether you are "safe" to drive. Best of all, it is so small the unit can discretely fit in your jacket or pants pocket. Use in the restroom or a quiet corner. Accurate to 0.05%.

Redline is the only disposable breathalyser in the world to be quality approved and certified for accuracy by the FDA, USA, Standards Australia, French NF & German TUV. Within two minutes, the test results are available. Order more than one disposable breathalyzer and share with friends and family! Traditional digital breath alcohol testers are a great investment for buyers looking to test several times in a month or multiple times in one day. T

Safety Alarms Needed to Protect Home Recently Converted to Natural Gas Heat and Water Heater

by Barbara 31. December 2010 02:34

Question: "We recently converted to natural gas heat and gas hot water boiler. We have two floors above this basement installation. What safety alarm units are required for protection? Nate.

Answer: Thanks for your question for the Ask Barbara Contest, Nate. I am going to answer with the assumption that your home was all electric prior to this conversion. If you heated with propane or oil, some of these recommendations may not apply.

Natural gas homes or businesses need two different types of safety alarms.

Combustible Gas Alarms.

Why do I need a combustible gas detector/gas alarm?

The purpose of a combustible gas alarm is to alert you when you have a raw gas leak. Yes, mercaptan is added to natural gas to make it smell like rotten eggs. But if you are not in the area of the gas appliances and/or you do not have an ability to smell, the odor does you no good. This units must be installed near the gas using appliances. So if your gas furnace and gas water heater are side by side, one natural gas alarm is all you need.

  • No matter how good your nose is, you may not be in the right place at the right time to notice a natural gas or propane leak.
  • Carbon monoxide alarms give NO protection against combustible gas leaks. carbon monoxide sensors detect only carbon monoxide, not raw fuel.
  • Turning off a light, setting a security alarm or closing a door spark a gas explosion or fire. Natural gas leaking from a basement furnace can leak upstairs through hollow walls.
  • Gas can leak into homes via sump pits, inbound water lines or a natural gas well under your home.
  • Each gas appliance is a potential source of a gas leak. Each gas appliance needs its own gas detector
  • We sell two different models with gas specific sensors. These are the Safe-T-Alert Model 40-411-120 and the Safety Siren Pro Gas Alarm; The main differences between the units are how they are installed.

To properly install the Safe-T-Alert you need an electrical outlet near to the gas appliances. Because this unit has a line cord that is approximately 65 long, mounting ths unit properly is usually less a problem that the direct plug-in Safety Siren. Raw gas detection units must be mounted within 6 inches of the ceiling or on the ceiling at least 12 inches from a wall for natural gas leak protection. Natural gas pools above the appliance: think of an upside down pothole filling with water and you get the picture.

The Safety Siren requires an electrical outlet near the appliance. Many people choose this option because the Safety Alert unit has a safety tab through which an outlet screw goes. This means the unit cannot be removed from a standard, single screw, double outlet without removing the screw.  These units meet the UL1484 standards for combustible gas alarms.

Note: UL 1484 listed combustible gas detectors are not detectors for minute gas leaks. Sensors and detectors are tested in a combustible gas environment and meet the UL 1484 standards for alerts of dangerous gas levels. Deliberate exposure to natural gas, butane, propane, etc. can destroy the sensor in this unit. Use the test button to test this unit, not exposure to raw gas.

    Carbon Monoxide Alarms:

One product of natural gas and all fossil fuels like coal, wood, peat, etc. is carbon monoxide, a colorless, odorless gas. If your furnace and water heater are working properly, carbon monoxide is vented outside. If the vents are not working properly due to obstructions or the furnace heat exchanger cracks, then carbon monoxide is discharged into the air. Unlike combustible gasses, carbon monoxide does not pool but is distributed throughout your air. Carbon monoxide exposure symptoms range from flu-like symptoms to brain damage to death from asphyxiation.

Recommended at a minimum are carbon monoxide alarms in or outside every bedroom, near the gas appliances and at the top of stairways. The easiest to install are the 9 volt battery units. Believe the alarm even if it sounds intermittently. About 5 years ago, I went to visit my parents in Pennsylvania. They have a washer and gas dryer in their kitchen (since 1952). I noticed that the Costar 9 volt CO alarms were all off their mounts (there were three units total). I was told they were "defective" as they were going off intermittently. I took them home with me and sent them to Quantum Group to be tested. Dave from Quantum phoned and said nothing was wrong with them! Meanwhile, my elderly father did NOT install the plug in Safe-T-Alert unit I had sent them because "I didn't know where to put it." The problem was the vent for the gas dryer was partially clogged with lint!  Since then, local code has changed: their 4 inch diameter gas dryer vent had to be replaced with a 5 inch for the newest dryer to be installed this past year.

    Types of Carbon Monoxide Alarms:

If you are really concerned about a gas leak, we recommend the Scentry III gas valve shut off systems. Choose from a Scentry III GFRAB LP/Natural Gas Detector Valve Controller with remote sensor capability and a battery back-up option feature or a Scentry III SFGVC Automatic Gas Valve Controller, No Gas Valveunit with a single sensor at the gas valve itself. Scentry units are made in the USA. They do require a special diaphragm type gas valve in 1/2, 3/4 or 1 inch size, a 24 volt power supply and 120VAC or 240VAC power.

Also install and maintain your smoke alarms which I am sure you already have.

Thank you for your question and your entry in the Ask Barbara Contest.

How to Install Cardinal Gates Deck Shield Netting on Outdoor Decks for Child Safety

    by Barbara 22. September 2010 10:52

Question about Cardinal Gates 50 Ft. Black Deck Shield Netting or the Cardinal Gates 50 Ft. Silver Deck Netting

Q: "How difficult is installation of this deck netting? How long should I expect it to last? Our deck is shaded part of the day. Thanks. Joan.

Answer: Deck netting is easy to install. And it should last at minimum several years depending upon your location.

Installation of this outdoor safety netting is easier with two people although one person can do it. With two people, it is easier to stretch the netting and secure it. There are cable ties provided to attach the UV resistant mesh netting to the deck posts. Eye screws are also provided to attach the plastic netting to the deck surface. Some sun rot over time can be expected depending upon the amount of sun exposure. There is no material that is 100% rot resistant.

The major differences between the silver and the black deck netting are as follows:

    • Thickness: Silver is substantially sturdier and thicker—more than 7 times thicker than black. Black is approximately 0.26mm thick. Silver is approximately 1.98mm thick.
    • Size of openings: Silver: each "mesh" rectangle measures ½-inch hole size .  Black: each "mesh" rectangle measures about 1.25" x .75".
    • Visibility: silver is even less visible from a distance.
    • Height: 36 inches for black and 36 inches for the silver

    Deck Netting Features:

    • Material: durable, weather-resistant plastic netting for child proofing.(polypropylene)
    • UV protected: sun "rot" is reduced.
    • Installation: quick and easy.
    • Cable ties (provided) to attach uv mesh netting to deck posts.
    • Eye screws (provided) to attach plastic netting to deck surface.
    • Barely visible from a distance.

If you need shorter lengths, please contact us. We sell 15 ft and 30 ft lengths in both black and silver.

Thanks for your question. Please contact us if you need more help or have additional questions.

    Sincerely, Barbara
