Window Blind or Window Shade Wraps Increase Safety for Children

by Barbara 8. June 2015 07:50

Question: "Please suggest how I can make window blinds and accordian shades more child safe. We cannot afford to have them all replaced. The cords are long. Thanks. Susan

Answer: We sell the Cardinal Gates Window Blind Cord Safety Wrap cord wrap that allows you to shorten exposed cords. We have only animals living in our home. We do have cats. The young Siamese ruined several duet shades by chewing on the cords (and climbing the shades). We installed Cardinal Gates window cord wraps on most of our shades. And opened the shades to the max to keep little Buddy from climbing.

These devices attach to your window glass, the frame or the wall using a very high bond adhesive. Made of clear plastic, the window blind cord wrap is hardly visible. It is a rounded oval shape,35 inches long and 1 inch wide in the middle. The cord wrap on the underside is 2 inches by just under a half inch. This size can handle long and or thick cords. You just wrap the cord around the cleat out of reach of animals and children. The clearness of the plastic and the installed heigh keep  a child's attention from cords. We actually installed ours very high so the cat (not de-clawed) cannot play with the window shade nor the cords. Do not install on non-racheting blinds. To lower or raise the shade unwrap to the desired length and then re-wrap around the holder. I mounted the wraps high on the window glass.

The Cardinal Gates Window Blind Cord Safety Wrap is made in China.

Thank you for your question. We do sell these in a bulk pack to save you money.

Barbara

Temperature Guard Remote Monitors for Temperature, Humidity & Power Now Need No Land Lines!

by Barbara 5. November 2013 12:25

Q: "I need to know if power fails or the temperature or humidity changes in my home in Connecticut in the winter or in our motor home when we travel in the summer. We winter in Florida and take our animals with us. I live in a safe neighborhood so I am not worried about break-ins. What do you suggest?" Thanks. Calvin

Answer: I suggest you purchase the new CM712 TemperatureGuard Self-Contained Remote Monitor. Microtechnologies introduced the CM712 in late summer 2013. This replaces the VM-500-3 and VM-500-3HT units that required a land line. This is an easily set up unit suitable for computer rooms, homes, motorhomes, boats and more. You may choose to purchase two units, one for your permanent home and one for your on-the-go home. For example, if the 120VAC power in your motor home park fails or your air conditioner stops cooling, you'll know if you are shopping, etc.

The initial cost is about $600. Remember you won't have to pay for a land line. You will need a SIM card, available on a monthly basis from Microtechnologies.com, the manufacturer. Or you can get one from ATT, etc.  Alerts go via the cell network. The three sensors for temperature, power and humidity are built in. If you want you can add a dry contact door sensor. In an RV park, you probably won't need that. The "tweets" are sent right to your cell phone or computer. An internal battery back-up means alerts continue if power fails.

Text Message Alarm Notices Include:

Temperature or humidity goes out of limits

  • A door is opened  (if you have that sensor installed)
  • Water is detected. (if you have that sensor installed)
  • When the alarm condition is corrected.
  • If an alarm condition is not corrected.
  • Power outage
  • Low internal or external battery.

Dual power operation:

120vac with its included wall mount power supply.
12vdc source for use in cars, trucks, campers, boats. Requires 12 Adapter Not Included.

SIM Plan Details:

A SIM card plan is required for the CM712 to connect to the cell network. Two options are: purchase a T-Mobile SIM card through TemperatureGuard.com (Curent cost in 2013 $150 per year or $12.50 per month with an automatic renewal). Or purchase a SIM from AT&T™ or from any GSM cell service provider worldwide. No SIM card is included with the TemperatureGuard unit.

CM712 Features:

  • Quad-band EGSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 MHz
  • Works on the AT&T™and T-Mobile™ cell networks.
  • Program up to four cell phone numbers to send alarm text messages to.
  • Program an ID text so if you have more than one CM712 you'll know which one is in alarm.
  • Programmable high and low temperature limits for each sensor
  • Programmable alarm time delay for each sensor.
  • Handy reminder feature will send additional text messages if an alarm condition continues.
  • Internal rechargeable battery backup. Approximately 6 hours.
  • Ability to connect external battery for even longer life when power is out
  • Wall mount enclosure.

Specifications:

One internal temperature sensor

Replace Safe-T-Alert RV30-441 Propane Alarm With a Safe-T-Alert 35-741,CO Alarm/Gas Alarm Combo

by Barbara 24. October 2013 06:05

Question about replacements for CCI Controls Propane Alarm 7770.244.

Question: "What 12 Volt RV gas alarm can replace my CCI Controls 7770.244 that is beeping? I also need a new carbon monoxide alarm." Thanks. Steve.

Answer: Safe-T-Alert has two units, the Safe-T-Alert 30-441 and the Safe-T-Alert 35-741. Both are surface mount units.  If you want to add more carbon monoxide detection, I suggest the new combination units, the 35-741 which comes in a black surface mount RV alarm and a white unit. The 30-441, gas only monitor with alarm, comes in brown and white. Both have approximately the same dimensions as the old CCI units.

If your carbon monoxide alarm is hard-wired, please look at these two units, the Safe-T-Alert 65-542 and the Safe-T-Alert 65-541 . The first is flush mounted, i.e. the rear of the unit goes into your RV wall. The second is flush mounted. These are available in white, brown and black.

If your carbon monoxide alarm is battery powered, consider replacing it with the Costar 9RV which meets all the RVIA specs for humidity and temperature ranges. For more protection, install the Costar 12RV-DB which hooks to both your coach 12 volt system and to your RV 12 volt engine battery. This unit draws from the unit with the most power and also has a 9 volt battery back-up.

And make sure your smoke alarm was replaced within the past 5 years as well. Nothing more annoying than being woken in the middle of the night by a false alarm! The Safe-T-Alert 775 is a 9 volt battery powered unit that is UL listed and approved for RV use.

Thanks for your question.

Barbara

Rodent Control and Small Animal Control Products For Summer or Winter Motorhome Storage

by Barbara 25. July 2013 06:41

Question about how to reduce rodent damage when storing a motorhome.

Question: "What products do you suggest for safe guarding my motor home against invasions by mice? We store our motorhome in an old barn. Thanks. Steve."

Answer: Steve, we suggest rodent control products for the barn, the motorhome interior and the motorhome engine compartment.

The preferred units operate on AC and send continuous ultrasonic and/or sonic waves that irritate rodents and small animals and discourage them from invading your barn.

  1. In the barn. If you have electricity in the barn, we suggest you install AC powered ultrasonic rodent repellers. One of the most durable are the Bird-X Yard Guard units. Depending upon which products you choose, you can also set the frequencies to keep small animals out of the barn as well.
  2. Inside the motor home. Your choices include traditional mouse traps and battery powered electronic mouse and rat traps. If you have 120VAC in the motor home from the barn electricity, ultrasonic pest repellers can be plugged in and placed under the kitchen sink and around the perimeters of the walking area. We recommend the Transonic Pro . This unit has a steel case, has settings that include those sounds that irritate mice, rats, small animals, insects, etc. We suggest a minimum of two units. Using repellers is much less hassle than emptying traps of decomposing rodents!
  3. Inside the engine compartment. The P3 International Under Hood Rodent Repeller will help to keep the mice out. This unit attaches easily to the inside of your engine compartment. Power is long lasting via batteries, not included.
  4. Underneath the motorhome. If you have power, place two Transonic Pro pest repellers back to back and turn them on the sonic chattering setting which covers the mice as well. If you do not, then the best option would be the YardGuard units, two units either back to back in the center aimed toward the outside or aimed toward each other.

If you have no electricity, the best options are the Underhood Rodent Repeller, the Animal  Away Pro, the Yard Guards on battery power and kill traps that operate on battery power. The investment the first year can be several hundred dollars depending upon your housing situation for your motor home or trailer. Just remember the damage that will be limited or avoided over the years to come.

Thanks for your questions.

Installation Height for Carbon Monoxide Alarms Is Your Choice

by Barbara 8. February 2013 10:52

Question about  installation height for most effective use of carbon monoxide alarms

Q:"How high do I need to install carbon monoxide alarms in my home?" Thanks. Rebecca

Answer: According to information from one of our manufacturers, you can install a CO alarm at any height in your home. The reason is that the molecular weight of air is almost identical to the weight of carbon monoxide. Air is typically composed of 78% nitrogen and 21% oxygen. Nitrogen has a specific weight of 28.013 while carbon monoxide is almost identical 28.011. CO mixes with
Air as their weights are approximately the same.

We advise you put the unit high enough that a child cannot tamper with the unit. Also remember that a minimum of 3 carbon monoxide alarms are recommended for a two story home, one on each level near the stairwells. Put one inside each bedroom if you close bedroom doors at night.

Direct plug-in units, CO alarms connected to a 12 or 24 volt security system and 9 volt battery operated ones give you many options.

We prefer the Costar 9RV, a 9 volt battery powered CO alarm that is for homes or recreational vehicles. These easily mount with two screws. The units cannot be reinstalled on the mounts unless there are batteries installed.

For homes with wired security systems, the CoStar Security System Carbon Monoxide Alarm,12-24SIR is a great choice.

Costar carbon monoxide alarms use a unique sensor that mimics red blood cells. Each sensor takes 28 days to "grow." The sensor reacts with carbon monoxide just as red blood cells do in our bodies. In other words, when a human is exposed to CO, the oxygen in the blood that attaches to red blood cells is replaced gradually by carbon monoxide. When carbon monoxide levels in an area near the sensor reach a level of 70 parts per million in a period of 60 to 240 minutes, the sensor is saturated sufficiently to set off an alarm. Below 35 ppm no alarm will sound. At 150 ppm, the alarm goes off within 10 to 50 minutes. At a level of 400 ppm, the alarm sounds within 4 to 12 minutes. 400 ppm alarm within 4 to 15 minutes.

Safe Home also sells RV carbon monoxide alarms that wire to both 12 volt systems, the coach and the engine, and have a 9 volt battery back-up. The CoStar 12RV-DB 12V RV CO Alarm W/9V Battery Backup protects you even if the 12 volt system is disconnected.

We also sell co alarms by other manufacturers that plug directly into 120VAC outlets. The only problem here is that few outlets are above a child's reach.

Thanks for your question.

Sincerely,

Barbara

Protect Sharp Corners of Exterior Metal Posts With UV Treated, Anti-Bacterial, Molded Foam Basic Corner Strips

by Barbara 7. January 2013 10:58

Question about how to safetyproof metal square posts in a Headstart playground area with Boing yellow corner strips

Q: "The director of my Headstart Program wants to protect children in our playground from (16) sixteen 90 degree angle square metal posts. He wants each post protected at least 48 inches from the base of each post. Four metal posts are 4 inches on a side. The other 12 metal metal posts are 3 inches on a side. What do you suggest? Thanks. Helen from Texas."

Answer: After reviewing all the options, I phoned my manufacturer. The only option is to purchase the Basic Corner Strips, cut them and stack them to the appropriate height. These are "Skin Urethane" molded foam strips with a shock absorbing "inner" foam and a thick outer “skin” to protect from abrasion, UV rays, moisture and bacteria.

Polyurethane is a completely self-skinning polymer that is stain-resistant, puncture-resistant and remarkably easy to clean. It resists staining caused by grease, chemicals, waste products, and other liquids, and can be cleaned as easily as a countertop. Polyurethane is naturally antibacterial/antimicrobial and odor-resistant, making it ideal for clean room environments.

Each shape of protective padding or protective corners is made to specific dimensions and baked in a mold for 30-40 minutes. This basic corner strip is currently available in yellow, red, green, blue, orange and ivory. The primary colors are the most popular for safety proofing, especially the yellow. Black and grey are usually available. At this writing, January 7, 2013, neither is available.

I suggest you purchase the case of 25 yellow as you need at least 20 and this is the most economical way to buy. Each stick is 39.5 inches long (39.4 inches on the inside) by 2.25 inches by 2.25 inches and 1/2 inch thick. Cut the sticks to stack them the height that you want. Put the cut side at the bottom and use silicone to seal that edge when you cut these lengths to stack to the 48 inches that your director wants: then water and moisture do not effect the strip. These strips are made to be installed either inside or outside. You need a minimum of 20 strips to cover the 48 inches. This product covers the sharp corner edges of the 90 degree angle posts. There is no product to will "fill in" the missing space.

Boing Safety Corner Edge Strip Features:

  • Designed for all types of wall/equipment/furniture corners, fireplaces etc.
  • Also great for "square posts".
  • Shock Absorbing.
  • Durable and long lasting.
  • Easy installation.
  • Use "GE-Silicone I" or II brand Rubber Silicone.
  • Quick repair or replacement.
  • Waterproof.
  • Can be used indoors or outdoors.
  • Fire retardant.
  • Anti-Bacterial.
  • UV treated.
  • Non-toxic: contains no PVC or phthalates.
  • 10 colors: Red, Orange,Yellow, Ivory,Green, Sky Blue, Indigo, Grey, Brown, and Purple.
  • Colors match 3 D Corner Cushions (not included).
  • Dimensions: Each stick is 39.5" long x 2.25" x 2.25" x 1/2" thick.
  • Non returnable if used.
  • Limited 1 year manufacturer's warranty.

Basic corner strips are also available in boxes of 4 and 10 strips. Please contact us if you have more questions. Thank you for the opportunity to quote.

Barbara

Childproofing A Home Against the Biggest Home Risks to Children

by Barbara 8. July 2012 06:00

Question about the most common dangers to children in and around homes.

Q: "We have a 6 month old baby, our first. Where should we begin to childproof our home? What are the biggest risks to a toddler or younger child? Thanks. Sue."

Answer: According to the USA Today, July 5, 2012 report, the Consumer Protection Product Safety Commission lists drowning, poisoning and tipping furniture as most common dangers. You may recall the baby crib recall. The cribs our parents used for us and we used for our children and grandchildren can no longer be sold. Remember the double release locks you pushed with your foot and the side dropped?  The Commission received reports and does research to determine which products are safe.

Drowning, poisoning and tipping furniture are considered the most common risks to young children. Cordless window blinds are recommended to reduce risks of strangulation.

The COSC recommends that whatever safety devices you buy for do-it-yourself installation or have installed by handymen or professional childproofers meet voluntary industry standards or are recommended by the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association.

Common sense tells you that poisons, medications, dishwasher detergent, etc. must be stored in secure places whether that place is a cupboard or a closet.

Here are a few suggestions based upon our customers' purchases:

These are childproofing products that are easily installed and may save the life of your child or grandchild or a visiting child.

Thank you for your questions.

Sincerely,

Barbara
