Stop Barking Dogs Next Door If Clear Line of Sight Exists for Bark Free Ultrasonic Devices

by Barbara 18. February 2014 09:50

Q: "Will the Super Bark Stop (ES-VT-BC16G) work through a fence?"

Answer: Not if the fence is a solid one. How to get a dog to stop barking requires either an ultrasonic device within range of the dog's ears, a persistent trainer or a persistent trainer using a hand-held ultrasonic device such as the Dog Dazer or Pet Agree.

The effective ultrasonic sound devices are similar to the Victor ultrasonic rodent repellers but tuned to the frequencies that dogs hear. Ultrasound behaves more like a light beam than sound that you hear. If the fence is a cyclone fence or the Barkstop is placed in the open space between the fence posts, some of the ultrasonic waves will go through to the adjoining yard.

Some customers install this unit in a birdhouse enclosure and aim it down over the fence. This will limit the area of coverage, however. Others have mounted the unit to their house or to a tree. The closer the unit or similar units are to the animal, the more effective it is. The maximum range is about 35 feet.

Lentek/Koolatron now offers three other units:

If your neighbor is a friendly one, he or she may be willing to install the unit on his/her side of a solid fence. There are other repellers that work but these sound a loud blast signal when a dog barks. These can be hung in a tree or on a post. The sound may annoy your neighbor and certainly will annoy you.

Most town have barking ordinances: most people try to avoid calling the police especially if their neighbors feel their dogs' barking is "natural." So I have found in my neighborhood where 5 yards touch and two of the neighbors have dogs that bark almost continuously when anyone or our Bostons go outside and they are out. Summers are so hot in Iowa that we and our dogs prefer the AC. And these neighbors are quite pleasant except when you mention their dogs barking. And the range of the bark stopping devices is insufficient due to the size of the yards.

Hand Held, Manually Activated Dazer and Pet Agree Use Ultrasound to Train or Scare Off Dogs

Question about the Dog Dazer and the Pet Agree.

Question: "I have a dog who is usually well-behaved until he sees another dog on our walk. Then the barking begins. Also I have been attacked by dogs when I am jogging. How do these devices work? Are they likely to work for me to train my dog and to scare off the aggressive ones? Thanks. Peter."

Answer: The Dazer and the Pet Agree are identical except for the color. These are sturdy, manually activated ultrasonic units that have a belt clip. Each uses a 9 volt battery that can last for years depending upon the frequency of use.

The best training method is to use a stern voice command like "No Bark" simultanously with the use of either device "shot" directly at the dog. Depending upon how intelligent and how stubborn your dog is, training may be fast or slow to stop dog barking. Rarely does the Dazer or the Pet Agree fail to work for training.

UPS, Fed Ex and USPS delivery persons use carry Dazers to ward off aggressive dog attacks. Aggressive dogs seem to respond more quickly to the ultrasound than non-aggressive ones. Using a strong "No" at the same time helps. We've sold hundreds of these units to delivery people and actually sold many to FEMA employees when Micronesia had a typhoon hit years ago.

The Dazer is gray; the Pet Agree is blue. The manufacturer made two colors with two names because the Japanese saw the word Dazer as a cruel word. Actually, the dog is not "dazed" as with a stun gun, just feels discomfort, not permanent injury, from the ultrasonic tone. These units also work with most cats.

Thanks for your question.

Sincerely,

Barbara
