Natural Gas Leak Detector Coverage Area?

Question about methane gas detectors for homes.

Q: "What is the coverage area for the natural gas leak detectors you recommend?-Judy"

Answer: Giving an exact coverage area is not possible for a variety of reasons. The best we can say is that a natural gas monitor be mounted near every potential gas leak source. Natural gas is lighter than air and rises to the ceiling above and near the gas leaking appliance. Even inside your home there are air currents in a room due to air conditioning or heating ducts, differences in temperature in a room (warmer air collects near the ceiling, cooler air settling to the floor).

Instruction manuals recommend that a natural gas monitor be mounted near the gas source for the most accurate detection. Mount the detector within 6 inches from the ceiling or on the ceiling at least 6 inches from the wall. Natural gas pools above the source gas, kind of like a stalactite begins from the ceiling of a cave.

We sell two brands of natural gas alarms that are easily installed because of the long cords. Two brands are UL1484 listed for use with natural gas and propane gas and also work with gasoline fumes and butane fumes. These are the Safe-T-Alert 40-411AC and the CCI Natural Gas Alarm with Battery Back-Up. We sell another unit by Safety Siren Combustible Gas Alarm by Family Safety Products that requires that an outlet be installed near to the appliance at the proper height.

Thanks for your question.

How Do Window Guards Prevent Theft Through an Open Window?

Question about John Sterling security window guards, Max Guards, Fixed Guards and Swing Open Guards .

Q:" Hi I am in need of some expertise here. I am interested in window guards to prevent theft through an open window. If I was to purchase this item ,how do they prevent theft on windows that are open?" A US Navy Chief Gunner Wife.

Answer: The security window guards that we sell are mounted on the inside of the home, apartment or other building. Guards can be mounted to protect only the window opening or the entire window. There are three styles: fixed, removable and swing open. The fixed are not for escape: in some places they are banned and in others they are required in non-sleeping rooms for safety. The Max guards remove completely from the mounting bars. The swing open units do just that.

The two kinds that open have a hole for either a clip or a lock so they cannot be opened from outside the building. The bar spacings vary from 3.5 to 4 inches so a hand could get between the bars but removing anything of any size would be difficult. And removing the clip or lock would be difficult to impossible from the outside. The bars are made of steel. The diameter/size varies from a round bar to the angle type bar of the MAX guards.

Please go to our website to figure out which size or sizes of guards would protect your windows. If you have questions, please send us your window measurements and types of windows and we'll guide you.

Thanks for your question.

Effective Area for an EVA-DRY Dehumidifier

Question about the MO-EDV500 EVA-DRY EDV500 Dehumidifier

Question about the product: "How big of an area does the EVA-DRY EDV 500 work in"?

Answer: It is difficult to be specific because of the many factors involved that can cause higher or lower humidity.

Some variables include:
  • Location: Is this in Florida or Pennsylvania? Is this in a bathroom, basement or bedroom?
  • Season: Is it summer in Pennsylvania or winter?
  • How well sealed is the area? A safe or a closet with vented doors?
This dehumidifier is made for small areas like a clothes closet, a gun safe, a small travel trailer, a boat or other small enclosed space. The Eva-Dry humidifier adsorbs about 10 ounces of moisture within 3 - 8 weeks depending on humidity level present. Once adsorbed, moisture cannot leak or spill. What adsorbs the moisture is a specially engineered crystallized silica gel that is odorless, non-toxic and completely safe.

What is handy about this unit is that no power is needed during the adsorption of the moisture. When indicator crystals turn pink, flip out the plug and plug the dehumidifier unit into a power outlet in a well-ventilated area (bathroom with extraction fan, garage, outside, etc.). A built-in heater warms the crystals which expand and release the moisture as water vapor into the surrounding air. A renewal cycle takes about 12-14 hours. When completely renewed, the indicator crystals are blue. Replace in closet, drawer or vehicle and the unit is ready to adsorb another 10 ounces of moisture.

If you have an electrical outlet and want more capacity, I suggest you purchase the Eva-Dry Petite Electric Dehumidifier. We have one running from April through October in our main office. It keeps the printer paper dry so we don't have paper jams. And the water collected keeps the plants watered. It is silent. The capacity is 2 cups and we empty it every other day.

Thanks for your question.

Lentek Yard Contro+ Animal Repeller and Goldfish

Question about the product Product Code: =LK-YC12G
Product Code: : LK-YC12G

Q: "Is this item safe for the gold fish in my pond? I would be buying it to keep the raccoons away. "

Answer: The water in your outdoor fish pond will reflect the ultrasonic sounds from the Yard Contro+ and water will dampen any sounds from the sonic sounds if you choose that mode. Remember the units will be facing away from the pond for best results. Or you can shoot the sound waves over the pond surface depending upon how large your pond is. You may need more than one unit to keep your fish safe from the raccoons. The motion detector range is about a 3o ft diameter.

Thanks for your interesting question. Good luck.

Installing Window Guards on Jalousie Windows

Question about the product Product Code: JS-1123-P WHITE 3 Bar Fixed Window Guards 23-42 Inches wide.

Q: "Can this style of window guard be installed on crank out jalousie windows?"

Answer: Yes, this fixed window guard can be installed on a jalousie window. What is important is that the guards are installed so that when the windows tilt they do not touch the bars. This may mean mounting the window bars on the window frame or beyond the frame into the wall studs after first screwing blocks of wood on the sides of the windows so as to make sure the window glass does not touch the window guard.

What you have chosen is a fixed or security window guard. These are recommended for non-sleeping rooms. If you are going to install this in a bedroom or are concerned about escape, please consider a window guard that can be opened by removing a lock pin. For example, the WHITE 5 Bar Lift Out MAX Long Window Guard 21x40-60 In. is a sturdy security window guard that also lifts out for window washing and escape. Also the WHITE 6 Bar Swing Open Window Guard (24-42 in. wide) swings open for window washing and escape.

As one website pointed out, the advantage of jalousie windows is the great ventilation and that they do not obstruct the view. The disadvantage is that the panes of glass are small, are a security risk as they are more easily and quietly broken out than a solid pane and are almost impossible to seal for energy efficiency.

Thanks again for your question.

Bed Bugs in College Dorm Room Beds?

Question about the product, BugLock® Allerzip, Bed Bug Encasement Mattress Covers .

Q: "Today on the CBS Early Show there was a segment called "Bed Bugs at College." My daughter starts college in a week and I am concerned about how to protect her and her mattress (an extra long twin) from bed bug bites. What do you suggest? Thanks."

Answer: I suggest you purchase a Protect-A-Bed zippered pillow encasement for her pillow and two extra long twin Aller-Zip BugLock® encasements and recommend that her roommates do the same. Ask for the depth of the mattress and box springs. Most in college dorms are 9 inches for the box springs and 9 to 11 inches for the mattress. Your goal is to have the cover fit tightly but not so tightly that the zipper might separate. These covers are comfortable to sleep on. However, we recommend that you add a regular Protect-A-Bed cover over the encasement in case someone spills something on the bed: you want to leave the encasement on the bed always. In fact, abandon the encasement at the end of the school year just in case there are bed bugs in the dorm.

There are many articles on the internet about mattress and box spring encasements. The main points seem to be:
  • Use encasements proactively: prevent the bed bugs from getting into the mattress and box spring
  • Encasements can help control bed bugs in an infested dorm by keeping them inside the mattresses and box springs, letting the exterminators do their work in the rooms.
  • Use only encasements tested and designed to be effective against bed bugs.
  • Leave the encasement in place: use another mattress cover on top if desired.
  • Protect the encasement from tears or punctures from the bed frame by padding rough edges before putting the mattress and box spring back on the frame.
From the article recently in US Today, "Ohio State University has seen "several incidents" over the past 15 months, spokeswoman Ruth Gerstner says, including an outbreak in May 2007 in three rooms of a high-rise dorm. Workers treated 114 rooms."

And "At the University of Florida's 4,000 dorm rooms and 980 apartments, "bad" infestations are limited to a couple of times a year, says Wayne Walker, who supervises dorm pest control. The school treats the problem with extreme heat, steam cleaning and pesticides."

What is advised is letting the experts treat bed bug infestations that do it yourself treatments usually fail and just cause the bugs to be more resistant to pesticides.

Thanks for your question and we wish your daughter the best!

Keep Mom from Overdosing on Medications

Question about the Medready MR-1500 . Basic Locked Medication Dispenser with Timer and Battery Back-Up.

Q: "My mom is 82 years old and sometimes forgets whether she'd taken her medications. Her medications are taken twice a day and are quite powerful so the results could be a disaster. The Medready MR-1500 seems the best choice since she has no significant hearing or vision problems. How would we set this up to dispense twice a day? And we also want a second pill tray so we can set up the medication for her every two weeks in advance. Thanks, Mitch."

Answer: "After plugging in the battery and the AC power supply, unlock and remove the lid to set the time and alarms. Follow the directions to set time of day for the first and second alarms. Then set the length of time the alarm is to ring. The factory setting is 30 minutes but you can set the ring time from 3 minutes to 250 minutes.

Place one of the enclosed cardboard medication discs over the clock face and load the medication as shown for two doses per day in a counterclockwise direction. Verify the alarm light(s) are on and replace the lid, AFTER sliding the white bar up and AFTER sliding the door closed. MedReady is now ready to keep Mom's medication safe and dispensed only twice a day.

Thanks for your question. And the best to your mom and to you.

Hearing Amplifiers for TV & Theater

Question about the products TV Ears and Super Ears amplifiers for TV, theater or conversation.

Q: "My wife complains I have the TV too loud. If I turn it down, I can't hear. What are my choices so I can enjoy TV and keep my wife happy? Thanks. Tom"

Answer: We sell both wireless TV headsets and hearing amplifiers. The more expensive units by TV Ears are superior as the headsets are light weight, volume is easily controlled by adjustments on the headset and what you hear is only the TV set. These units are also ADA compliant which means they pick up signals at theaters and other venues with ADA broadcast signals. Prices vary with the features offered. We currently sell the the TV Ears 2.3 MHz for those with normal hearing. The TV Ears Original system is for those with moderate to severe hearing lost. We also sell two hearing aid compatible units with extra features, the TV Ears Pro and the TV Ears Home Theatre .

The two hearing amplifiers that we sell are the basic SuperEars and the Super Ears Plus These hearing amplifiers are inexpensive and easily portable. Like most amplifiers, they are not direction specific even with the built-in microphones. So you'll hear side conversations and other noises. And you'll have to hold the units or lay them on a table or arm rest. The headsets do have connective wires to the microphone/amplifier unit.

I Need to Know When the Power Goes Out at Home

Question about home power monitors.

Q: "I winter in Arizona. My home in Oregon is in the country at the end of the power grid. I leave the furnace set at 55 degrees while I am gone those 4 months. My neighbor keeps an eye on the house. But a storm or fallen tree can knock out my power and leave his power still on. I don't want my pipes to freeze or my home damaged. What do you sell that can alert him and me that the power is out at my house?"

Answer: We currently sell two brands of remote monitors. Neither require paying a monthly monitoring service fee. These are the Sensaphone and the Microtechnologies brands.

The Sensaphone 400 , once known as the Sensaphone "cottage sitter", lets you program in 4 phone numbers, add additional sensors, control your thermostat remotely, and has a 24 hour battery backup using C cells. Two other units are less expensive choices that would to meet your needs are the Homeguard and the TemperatureGuard monitors. What you are looking for is a monitor that can dial out an alert that the power is off and give you the temperature in your house as well.

The standard Homeguard and TemperatureGuard units have a built-in 4 hour battery back-up that activates when the power goes out. We've learned over the years that getting the insurance of a Temperature Guard with 20 hour battery back up or one with a 30 hour battery back-up has its advantages, primarily that the units will have extended battery so that if you turn off your phone at night (or your neighbor does), there will be enough battery left to continue dialing out until you wake up or turn on your phone or phones.

The Homeguard can dial up to 4 phone numbers. It also comes with a 20 hour or 30 hour battery back-up . The Homeguard alert is set at below 45 degrees F or power off for 5 minutes or more. The TemperatureGuard can also send messages to pagers as well as dial up to 4 phone numbers. The TemperatureGuard lets you choose both an upper and a lower limit (for summer and for winter) as well. Of course you can call into either unit at any time to get the power status (on or off) and the temperature. Both units and their brothers and sisters need a land phone line and electricity to work. Programming is easily done with a telephone.

Please read the instruction manuals on our website for more information or contact us.

Thanks for your question.

Is There a Bona Kemi Spray Mop for Laminate Floors?

Question about the product: Bona Kemi Spray Hardwood Floor Mop with Cartridge.

Q: "I am interested in your bona kemi spray hardwood floor mop with cartridge, but am wondering if you make one for laminate floors. I'd like to use this on laminate. Would it hurt the flooring? Thank you for your help."

Answer: We contacted Bona Kemi. Their reply: Bona is now making a stone, tile and laminate replacement cartridge for the Bona spray mop. Their rationale is that the hardwood floor cleaner can safely be used on stone, tile and laminate, the Bona spray mops are initially being produced with the hardwood cartridge. The difference in formulas is that the laminate formula contains more degreaser.

Do remember that the spray mop cartridges are not refillable. We recommend the standard Bona MicroPlus mop with two mop covers, the MicroPlus mop with one wet pad and a dusting pad or the Bona large based mop with two microfiber mop covers . You can use your own spray bottle or buy Bona hardwood or hard surface cleaner in a 32 oz. spray bottle , gallon or concentrate , each of which makes 32 oz. of cleaner. This is more economical and about as fast when you have larger areas to clean.

Thanks for your question.

Getting Rid of Roosting Robins in a Tree

Question about the Product P3-P7830, P3 Passive Infra-Red Sonic Birdchaser Repeller

Q: "Will this product scare away roosting robins in a tree? I will mount it in the tree and need to run it at night starting at dusk when they arrive. Please offer your repy and any guarantee that it will work. Thanks. Franco"

Answer: This is not the unit for you: it won't work at night because it has a photo electric cell that won't let it operate.

The photo cell of the BirdChaser disables the unit when it gets dark as that is the time birds tend to be less active. The BirdChaser does have two modes, infra-red and Auto. The infra-red motion detector mode in which the unit activates if a bird flies in the detection area or any warm blooded animal is detected within the covered area. The Auto mode activates according to the setting of the time interval, 5 to 30 minutes. So during daytime hours, the BirdChaser broadcasts predatory calls of hawks and owls every 5 to 30 minutes.

Better choices:
  • Spraying the tree with Birdproof liquid: birds won't roost if the roost is sticky. Lasts a few years in most climates.
  • Hanging Holographic Irritape in the tree: wind makes the tape rustle and sun glare scares the birds away.
  • BirdXpeller Pro 1 : This sonic bird chaser can be set to operate at night as well as during the day. Set switch 3 and switch 4 to on and it will operate at night. Or set switch 3 off and switch 4 on and it will work 24/7.

Getting rid of birds and keeping them away is easier and more successful if you use more than one bird control method at the same time.

Thanks again for your question. Good luck.

Sincerely, Barbara

Does the Deerguard Effect Dogs and Cats?

Question about the Product: BirdX DEERGARD Electronic Deer Repellent

Q: "Can the Deergard be used against deer without irritating dogs and cats effectively? I need 16 units- is there low voltage units available? What frequency to work on deer but not dogs and cats? Thanks, Alan"

Answer: If you position the units facing out from your property, the Deergard units should have no effect on the dogs and cats on your property. Unless your animals have unusual hearing abilities, the ultrasonic frequency of 15 kHz to 25 kHz (adjustable) or 15,000 Hz to 25,000 Hz of the Deergard should cause no issue at all to any dogs or cats.

The frequency range of dog hearing is approximately 40 Hz to 60,000 Hz, depending on the breed of dog as well as its age. Like humans, dogs can begin to go deaf as they become older. In some breeds of dogs, complete deafness occurs in old age.

The cat hearing range (in Hz) is 45 to 64,000, compared to 64-23,000 in humans. So cats can hear sounds we can't hear on both ends of the spectrum, particularly the higher end.

Precautions per the Deergard instruction manual:

"Even though the top range of the DeerGard, 25 kHz, is above human hearing range (which averages, at top level, about 16 kHz), the intensity is great enough to present a chance of damage to the ear if it is directly exposed for an extended period of time at a distance of less than 10 feet. These units should definitely not be located at or near a place where someone will be located for a long time. Normally, this type of unit is located outside pointing away from a house or structure, and thus presents no problem when located in this manner. We suggest that when you are sitting or working within range of the unit, you turn it off, as human presence will normally deter the pests.

  • As with any electrical device, do not place the unit in or near water and do not mount it while standing in or surrounded by water.
  • Do not aim the product into neighboring yards or public areas, or at caged or leashed animals.
  • It is intended for use on your own property only. Some people with good high frequency hearing will be able to hear the unit at its lower frequencies. If this occurs, select a higher frequency."

As with other pest control measure, the Deergard works better when used along with other methods such as Deer Scram Organic Granules, ScootDeer Spray , Deer Fortress or protective garden netting.

Hope this helps. Thanks for your question.

    Sincerely, Barbara

Why does the Dog Stop Barking?

Question about the Product Code: =PET-BF02-PRO Lentek Super Bark Free PRO Device

Q: "What does the dog stop barking? Is this painful to them? " Loretta

Answer: Dogs do not like the ultrasonic tones generated when they bark within the range of the Super Bark Free. Per the instructions: "Dogs learn to associate the loud, irritating sound produced by the unit as being a result of barking and stop barking to stop the Super Bark Free sound. Always remember, the activation microphone in the Super Bark Free just detects sound, it can not tell the difference between different types of sounds. Do not try to instigate barking from your dog to see if the Super Bark Free is working. A dog will always bark if harassed.

Most dogs find that being close to an activated Super Bark Free is very distressing and uncomfortable. Sometimes older dogs or breeds with congenital hearing problems are unable to hear the ultrasonic sounds emitted and ignore the Super Bark Free. This is also true of situations where there is a lot of other noise close to the dogs. The ultrasonic sound emitted is drowned out by the other noise."

Hope this helps. Thanks for your question.

    Sincerely,
    Barbara

Does this Mattress Cover Encase the Whole Mattress?

Question about the product Product Code: =SF-JAB-P0197 TWIN XL Protect-A-Bed Waterproof Mattress Cover

Q: "Does this Protect-a-Bed pad envelope the whole mattress?"

Answer: No, this premium waterproof, anti-allergen mattress cover fits the mattress like a fitted bottom sheet. The waterproof top is absorbent and cool to sleep on. The pad covers the entire top and has a stretchy elasticized skirt that fits on the sides of the mattress and secures under the corners of the mattress or box spring similar to a fitted sheet.

The Allerzip Twin XL cover includes the anti-allergy, anti-dust mite features of the Protect-a-Bed cover plus the BugLock 3 sided zipper waterproof mattress system. The ALLERZIP seal provides complete protection against allergens, dust mites and bed bugs both entering or leaving the mattress. The sizes include the 13 inch mattress size ,the 11 inch mattress size and the cover for 9 inch mattresses , also the most common size for covering box springs.

Encasements are a solution to costly replacements of bed bug infested mattresses and box springs. Bugs and eggs in mattresses and box springs become trapped within the zippered mattress cover, cannot feed (on humans, animals or birds) and ultimately die from starvation.

Thank you again for your question.

    Barbara

Which Gas Detector Do I Need? I Have Anosmia.

Q: "I have anosmia, i.e. I have lost my sense of smell. We have natural gas heat, a natural gas water heater and a natural gas cooking stove. I cannot smell a gas leak. Which gas detector do you recommend?"

Answer: Currently, we sell three brands of combustible gas alarms.

Two brands are UL1484 listed for use with natural gas and propane gas and also work with gasoline fumes and butane fumes. These are the Safe-T-Alert 40-411AC and the Safety Siren Combustible Gas Alarm and the Safety Siren CO and Combustible Gas Alarm.

The advantage of the Safe-T-Alert is the long cord for proper positioning of the detector, i.e. high and near the appliance for natural gas and low and near the appliance for propane. We also sell the Safe-T-Alert in a 230VAC unit for Europe and Asia. The Safety Siren unit is a direct plug in with a safety tab that the outlet plug screw goes through so the unit cannot be easily removed. Most customers who buy the Safety Siren model install an electrical outlet at the proper height for natural gas or propane.

The third brand is fine tuned to be either propane specific or natural gas specific and features a battery back up in case of a power outage. The CCI Propane Gas Alarm and the CCI Natural Gas Alarm and Gas Detector are these two units. Propane has a lower flammable and lower explosive level than natural gas and thus this alarm goes off at a lower concentration level.

All our combustible gas alarms sound at less than 25% of the lower explosive or flammable level of the gas.

Please contact us if you have further questions or are interested in our gas shut off valve system that is activated by a combustible gas alarm.

    Sincerely, Barbara

How do 5.86Hz & Dect 6.0 telephones differ?

Question about the product GE29115GE1 GE Amplified Cordless Phone Dect 6.0 with Answer Machine

Q:"Please explain the difference beween 5.86 Hz and Dect 6.0. I need clarity and the ability to raise volume. Also, we live in a mountainous area. Which phone is best?"

Answer: The following information we received from our distributor and from internet websites.

5.8 GHz phones offer great clarity and range. The biggest advantage to a 5.8 GHz phone is that its frequency band is less congested than the 2.4 GHz band, resulting in less interference."

DECT 6.0 telephones are a newer technology. DECT stands for Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications. . ETSI stands for the European Telecommunications Standards Institute who developed the DECT systems. The DECT channels are reserved exclusively for voice communication applications. European DECT phones use different frequencies.

DECT 6.0 distinguishes these telephones from both DECT devices used elsewhere and U.S. cordless equipment operating in the 900 MHz, 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz ISM bands. The "6.0" is a version number (as in software), not a spectrum band; the term "6.0 GHz" for DECT 6.0 phones is incorrect, since it operates at 1.9 GHz.

The 29111GE1 phone is hearing aid compatible, can expand to up to 4 handsets and has a call volume up to 40dB. Included is an amplified ringer, speaker phone and much more. All the handsets use a single phone line socket. DECT 6.0 phones generally has interference-free wireless operation to around 100 metres outdoors. And they generally are immune to interference from Wi-Fi networks or video senders, Bluetooth technology, baby monitors and other wireless devices.

If you need an answering machine with your phone, the GE 29115GE1 cordless phone with answering machine is a great product. For additional handsets, choose the GE 29110AE1 handsets with recharger base.

For your needs, the DECT 6.0 appears to be the better choice due to the volume control and the range. Thank you for your question.

    Sincerely, Barbara

Do Heated Seat Cushions Heat Only a Few Minutes?

Question about the Wagan Heated Seat Cushions for Cars: The Wagan Heated Seat Cushion with Hi Low Switch, Wagan Deluxe Heated Seat Cushion and the Total Rest Heated Seat Cushion with Dual Voltage and Magnets.

Q: "Do these heated car seat cushions heat for only a few minutes and then shut off. I see that the heated seat with high low switch indicates that."

Answer: As of this date, Safe Home is selling several different heated cushions that can be used in a car. The thermostat regulates the temperature so the turning on and off is subtle, not noticeable to the seated person. Each heated cushion has different features:

    • The ES-WA-9738 has a hi/low switch and a thermostat that turns the heat on and off to maintain a temperature of either 120 degrees F on the high setting or 90 degrees F on the low setting.
    • The ES-WA-2282, the deluxe model heats quickly and maintains a comfortable 110 degrees to 120 degrees F.
    • The WA-9888 is a heated seat with magnets and massage (optional) that can be used as a 12V heated seat cushion or on standard AC current with the adapter (included), Wagan did not supply us with a temperature for this unit. I used on in my office chair and I find the heat comfortable without being too hot.

Until I purchased a minivan with heated seats, I used the basic 9738 heated cushion. In comparison with my minivan seats, this cushion heated within a few minutes to toastly warm. I remember flying into Cedar Rapids from Minneapolis on a bitter cold day in January. Before I reach the tollbooth in the parking lot (and the Eastern Iowa lots are not far from the booth), my seat was warm through my coat. I turned the temperature to low before I got to I-380. I was not aware that the heat turned on and off as there is not signal.

My minivan seats never get that warm and I don't feel the heat for about 10 minutes in the winter. (I used my heated seats in the summer, too. Great on the back.)

    Thanks for your question.

    Sincerely, Barbara

How Long Will My BoomBox Run on this Power Supply?

Question about the Product: VEC1026BD Black and Decker Portable Power Supply 250W.

Q: "How much time will this unit give me in the 120VAC mode to use my small boom box which uses about 12 watts of power? Does the 250 watt on the power unit mean that when charged fully it holds 250 watts of power? Therefore my radio boom box should run approx. 20 hours?thanks-Bob."

Answer: This portable power supply has a 10 amp hour battery in it, so your boombox should run about 10 hours if the unit is fully charged. We do sell other units such as the Wagan Power Dome that are larger with more watts of power. The Wagan has 450 watts and, fully charged, would run a boombox that draws 23 amps about 8 hours. For a 12 watt draw, that would be closer to 16 hours.

    Thank you for your question.

    Sincerely, Barbara

Will a Radon Detector Detect Outgas from Granite?

Queston about the SM-RAD-PRO3Safety Siren Pro 3 Radon Gas Detector.

Q: " Will this detect radon outgassing from granite countertops? Thanks. Diane.

Answer: First, here is some information found on August 6. 2008 on the Marble Institute of America's website: "Radioactivity in Granite: It’s Natural. All rocks have a small amount of radioactivity in them due to the presence of minerals that contain radioactive elements uranium (U), thorium (Th) and potassium-40 (40K). Because granite typically contains more of these elements than most other rocks, it will be more radioactive than a slate or marble. All of the minerals in granite contain some radioelements; the white or pink feldspars contain 40K, the black biotites and horn-blendes contain 40K, U and Th, and the small inclusions of minerals such as zircon, apatite, sphene, etc. contain the most U and Th."

My response to your question is that the outgassing of radon from granite countertops would have to be significant to put enough gas in your kitchen or bathroom to be a health hazard. Installing the Safety Siren Pro 3 in rooms with granite countertops would detect outgas from granite just as it would radon seeping in from the ground.

The health risks are much higher from radon seeping into your basement or home from the ground. If you live in the Northern half of the USA or in areas designated on the EPA radon map of the USA as high radon areas, your concern should first be to test your basement or first floor if you have a crawl space for radon. The Safety Siren Pro 3 Radon Gas Detector has proven to be quite accurate if positioned at the proper height and in the proper location.

Home radon gas levels are not stable. Over a one-month period, radon gas readings can vary from safe to dangerous. Radon levels change due to humidity, temperature, ventilation and season. EPA currently recommends corrective action if radon levels exceed 4 pCi/L (4 Pico-Curies per liter) on a long-term basis. For these reasons, a continuous monitor is better than periodic canister tests.

Go to our website for more information.

    Thanks for your question.

Which Assistive Hearing Device is Best with a Cochlear Implant or Hearing Aid?

Question about the products SuperEar Powerful Hearing Amplifier Item Code ST-SE4000 and SuperEar Plus Deluxe Personal Sound Enhancer Item Code ST-SE7500.

Q: "I need a hearing amplifier to increase television volume. I have a cochlear implant which is similar to a hearing aid. Right now my wife complains that I turn the volume up too high for her. Which product, the SE4000 or the SE7500 is better for my needs?"

Answer: The SE4000 is an inexpensive hearing amplifier that is ADA compliant and uses a boom type microphone. The SE7500 has an internal mike, is ADA compliant and includes other features such as an automatic shut-off after 45 minutes, stereo ear buds and stereo headsets as well. Both have wired headsets. The disadvantages of these are that you'll hear background noises as well as the television sound.

My suggestion: buy a TV Ears professional system. Yes, it is much more expensive than a simpler handheld device. You'll find this unit will meet your needs both at home and when you go to the symphony, rock concert, church or anywhere that is ADA equipped and operating on 95 kHz. When you get your new LCD or plasma TV, you can use the TV Ears Professional System 10241, too.

You also need the TV-1024, the Neck Loop TVEars Pro Headset Accessory for T-Coiled Enabled Hearing Aids . The Neck Loop accessory enables TV Ears Pro headset to communicate with a T-coil enabled hearing aid via a 32 Ω (ohms) input with a 3.5mm plug. The Pro headset has an input and output jack in the headset.

The TV Ears Pro television head set jack allows for the addition of many helpful accessories to the TV Ears unit. These accessories include a 6 foot audio cord, cell phone cord (Std. 2.5mm plug, voice cord (creates personal amplification system) with microphone, music cord (for MP3 and other music devices) that lets you use TV Ears like a standard headset) and a 6 foot extender cord plus a connection cord for the power stacker. The headset weighs under 2 ounces.

Thank you for your question. If you need more information, please send us email or phone us.

    Sincerely,
    Barbara
