Choices of Medical Exam Gloves, Latex Gloves, Powdered Gloves, Vinyl Gloves, Etc.

Question about different types of exam gloves.

Q: "I am confused. What are the different types of exam gloves? Why would one type be better than another? Thanks. Susan"

Answer: According to my research (and the products Safe Home Products is selling from medical suppliers), there are three main types of examination gloves.

For general patient care, choose the least expensive that meet your needs. For example, latex gloves are great unless you have a latex allergy. I break out from latex band-aids. In fact, once I had a mole removed and the scar and inflammation from the latex adhesive was worse than the scar left from the incision!

Cleaning company employees generally wear vinyl gloves when cleaning bathrooms, powder rooms, etc. to protect against germs

Sterile exam gloves are individually packaged. These are used when working with patients with open wounds.

Surgical gloves meet higher standards

  • Latex gloves: still the surgeon's favorite. Often have a polymer inner coating for easier donning whether hands are damp or dry.
  • Polyisoprene surgical gloves: synthetic polyisoprene offers a similar tactile sensitivity to latex. Often has a polymer inner coating as well.
  • Neoprene surgical gloves:synthetic neoprene is latex-free. Like latex, neoprene give both excellent barrier protection plus a similar fit and feel. Less elastic than latex. Available with polymer inner coating. More expensive than latex to produce.

Safe Home Products will be carrying surgical gloves in the future.

I hope this helps with your decision.

Thanks for your question.

Sincerely, Barbara
